Yep, from what I read, Joel preferred his cheesier looking bomb prop over the more realistic one SNL made him, so he left it at his hotel room when he left and the employees thought it was real
The great thing about that Batman "stunt" is that it has aged remarkably well. Now the audience at home only need only turn their phones on their sides.
It's fascinating how both Joel and Carrot Top were known at the times for prop comedy, but the two could not be more polar opposites in personality and delivery.
There's another universe, somewhere parallel to our own, where Carrot Top went on to have a brilliant TV show where he mocks bad movies --- and in that same world, Joel Hodgson can bench 650 lbs.
I saw Joel stand up on TV a bunch of times in the early 80s. But I'd been watching MST3K for many years before I found out it was the same guy. Blew my mind.
I first met him when he was still a wait assistant at the Loring Cafe & doing gigs at Dudley Riggs comedy theater on his nights off. Really really funny guy
In the not-too-distant future next Sunday ad there was a guy named Joel not too different from you or me he worked at Gizmonic Institute just a regular face in a red jumpsuit did a good job cleaning up the place but his bosses didn't like so they shot him into space we'll send him cheesy movies the worst we can find la la la he'll have to sit and watch them all and we'll monitor his mind la la la Now keep in mind Joel can't control for the movies begin or end la la la because use those special parts to make his robot friends. Robot roll call: Cambot! Gypsy! Tom Servo! Crooooow! If you're wondering how he eats and breathes and other science facts la la la then repeat to yourself it's just a show I should really just relax for Mystery Science Theater 3000
And somewhere a mad scientist is waiting in the dark going,”I…will send this man into space, and drive him crazy watching the worst movies of all time.”
Joel's flat delivery and timing is so infectious. His card trick alone made me a fan. It's so simple and yet absolute genius!
This is great. We got to see him do standup AND lay-down comedy.
All praise the algorithm that brought this gem to my feed. Brilliant!
Dude, this guy is funny. Love watching MST3K with the family.
"I guess we've ALL got about three minutes now." 🤣
Fun fact: the bomb prop actually caused a bomb scare at the hotel Joel was staying at when he did this
Yep, from what I read, Joel preferred his cheesier looking bomb prop over the more realistic one SNL made him, so he left it at his hotel room when he left and the employees thought it was real
This happened 5 years before he was shot into space and sent cheesy movies.
The worst we can find!

@@JeffSchalldid Joel also make Chairman Of The Board in that universe?
With his unique droll delivery, he was the Steven Wright of prop comics.
"low energy prop comic"
He got me a bunch of times. "We've all got three minutes..." Funny guy.

@@JAKECOT_CENTER it stinks!
This is hilarious oh my
What i'd give to see SNL start doing this again. Give up and coming comics an solid 5-10 set block in between sketches to showcase their talent..
Great job Joel very funny

Maybe consider more comics instead of music acts. If the cast can't make us laugh maybe bring in some pros.
What do you think sirs?
when did SNL stop bringing on stand up artists?
