Agreed, I adore good quality 2D sprite work. I am not a fan of the big long doll eyes and wish the heads were smaller, a bit too chibi for me but still love 2D sprites overall so I cant complain. Some of the best I have ever seen is breath of fire 4. Pretty much the perfect 2D sprite work.
I always find it funny when character sprites constantly looking like they're walking when standing still in cutscenes. No idea why, it just looks kind of old school and silly. I will be playing this just for that aspect.

I'm 33 hours into the game so far and I'm really enjoying it. I don't feel like the game is slow at all but I felt like that with all the Trails games I've played(FC, SC, CS1, CS2, Sky 3rd, CS3, CS4 in that order) and I enjoy every minute of it. It feels like every JRPG I've played where it builds up the story with you learning about the characters and world first and then hitting you with the heavy plot twists. I look forward to seeing more of what this game has to offer, even if I know some things thanks to CS3 and 4 though without context and I probably forgot some of it too lol I got the game for the Switch(the LE of it) and PS4. Walking around talking to NPCs, reading the newspapers and books, and the simple battle system is all fun. It's nostalgic too going back and playing this style of Trails game with the chibi look and I'm a big fan of chibi. Major downside for me is the lack of an English Dub so that does hinder my enjoyment of the game but I'll just have to push through this barrier with all my might. I'm nowhere near beating the game(I think) and I'm already ready for Trails to Azure next year(and Trails Into Reverie of course). ^_^
I really wanna give the cross bell arc a shot. I loved trails in the sky 1 & 2 although it take awhile for it to grow on me for similar reasons you talk about regarding the opening hours of zero. I got through cold steel 1 and my god I thought it get more interesting by cold steel 2 but all the field study stuff just bogged it down to much for me to care about the story like I had to get through so much painfully slow story sections for it to get interesting. Hoping the series going forward abandons the structure cold steel started.
The game still has the same 3x speed cheat as CS 1 to 2 and with It on + EASY mode the ENTIRE game is beatable in UNDER 15 hours around 30 for its sequel.
At this point, I'd recommend watching a summary of the Sky arc on UA-cam. I wouldn't reccomend the game for anyone who wants to get into the series from the more interesting arcs.

I actually love these character models, I wish they'd do FF6 in this exact style!

Yea Compared to sky FC and cs 1 this is the fastest entrypoint to any ark

At the very least you know what you'd be getting into with the cdossbell games in terms of pacing

How lost will I be if I've never played the Sky or Cold Steel games?
Not lost at all. You mainly won't get pay off for one character's story arc later in the game who's from Sky.
Cold steel arc happens after. For this game you’ll need knowledge of the sky trilogy.
