US Cup was an annual tournament started in 1992, involving USA and 3 other teams, The idea was to get the US team experience in view of the 1994 World Cup, since there was no pro league in USA back then, it was held until 2000, this 1993 edition was the most prestigious since it involved Brazil Germany and England

God,..those uniforms. Hard to believe we played well against a World champion, albeit older Germany. I loved these guys. They didn't have the greatest technique or skills, many were only playing in semipro leagues, but they played with heart, they fought for every ball, and held their own against much stronger teams.

At that time there existed the Confederations Cup (1993). This was a tournament like that. It was a small tournament to test the stadiums and the organization for the World Cup 1994.

In the eyes of Three Lions, for them to lose a Football match is unthinkable. It's amazing they haven't learned anything since 1966!

@@arifmetalfire No, they really don't... And it's mind-blowing as to why that is... English football, EPL teams, have amazing success in Europe and has had so on and off for decades now. But when it comes to Three Lions, that is another matter entirely.

@@TheAngelOfDeath01 Maybe your opinion is right , some English clubs sometimes are powerful in Europe once it happens , but if their player adapt their style playing of club into national team maybe it was fantastic and great

Meola's reactions strangely much slower in this match than the previous one. He should have imagined he was playing against England rather than Germany and maybe his effort levels would have radically improved.

Que curioso. De los 7 goles 3 fueron sin red; osea, la pelota no golpeó la red porque fue despejada antes desde dentro del arco.

Now Klinsmann has Americans convinced that their only hope is players who weren't good enough to get called up into the German team, when in this video from 1993, when soccer wasn't even in the top 10 of sports in America, they could produce a team made up entirely of American born & raised players & hold their own against Klinsmann's own German team who were world champions & they could beat England, though they were crap, then again, England has always been crap. 2002, USA had an American coach & a team of American born players & they reached the WC quarter final & were denied by poor officiating against Germany. So in short, get rid of Klinsmann. He was a good player, but he's a shitty coach. After he resigned from coaching Germany, they went on to win the World Cup, what does that tell you? His method kills passion from players & teams like USA need a good motivator for a coach. Klinsmann is not

Well, to be fair, this US team had Thomas Dooley....Who was born and raised in Germany but raised by a American father. So, Germans playing for the USMNT is hardly something new.

Actually, saying that this 1993 team was made up entirely American born and raised players is FALSE. Thomas Dooley and Ernie Stewart - the two goal scorers for the United States - were born in Germany and The Netherlands respectively, and were playing professionally in Europe before getting recruited to come play for the United States. Tab Ramos, Fernando Clavijo (born in Uruguay) and Roy Wergle (born in South Africa). Wergle was eligible to represent the US after he obtained citizenship via his marriage to an American wife. In addition to that, just about all these players were plying their trade overseas as the MLS had yet to be formed at this point.
In 2002, 12 of the 23 players on the US roster were playing overseas at the time of the World Cup, and it was a far more experienced and battle-tested squad than the ones that took the field in 1990 and 1994.
Also, it's kinda funny how you underrate Klinsmann. He helped revive the fortunes of the German national team. Between 2000 and 2004, Germany had stalled, and their 2002 WC final appearance was considered a fluke, considering they had to qualify for the tournament via a playoff against Ukraine; and promptly followed it up by crashing out of the group stages in Euro 2004. Klinsmann took over and right off the rip, gave them the jump-start they need by bringing back attacking play, introducing younger players into the squad; whereas previous coaches would still rely on older players despite being past their prime. Not many people expected Germany to even make the semis in 2006, so essentially, they exceeded expectations, and even begged him to retain the job. Don't forget that Jogi Low was an assistant to Klinsmann. Germany winning the World Cup in 2014 was a byproduct of what they Jogi and Klinsmann build together.
The reason why it didn't work out for Klinsmann with the US team was because he was trying to introduce a more technically sound approach to the game, in order to compete on an level footing with European teams.
Unfortunately, his methods were not a match with the talent on hand. Just because it didn't work out doesn't make him a terrible coach.
