  • Group Captain Sir Douglas Robert Steuart Bader CBE, DSO & Bar, DFC & Bar, FRAeS, DL, RAF was a Royal Air Force fighter ace during the Second World War. In 1928, Bader joined the RAF, but, two years later, lost both of his legs in an aircraft crash attempting a slow roll at very low level following jibes about him not wanting to perform aerobatics that day. Bader recovered, undertook refresher training, passed his check flights, and attempted to stay in the RAF but was retired for medical reasons on 30 April 1933. After the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, he was drafted and he requested that he be assigned to the RAF. Posted to a fighter squadron in 1940 Bader scored his first kills during the Battle of France, over Dunkirk. For more on this Hero, pay us a visit on www.aircraftube... Incredibly brave men with a tremendous respect for the machines they flew and the opponents they flew against

    Good to see another hero of WW2 but almost unknown, Robert Roland Stanford Tuck. Read his biography by Larry Forester; "Fly For Your Life", a brilliant fighter ace.

    He could be an outright bastard. In Colditz he treated his batman in an appalling way. He would not let him be repatriated by the Germans. "My lackey you are and my lackey you will be" were his words. I met Bader once at the age of 17. I said some words to him and shook his hand. He was electric in personality and had such an authority about him that left me spellbound. My childhood hero.

    Mark law, you are so right, the sacrifices our forefathers, including group captain bader, made, seem to have been in vain considering the dire state of the uk these days.

    I've just read Bader's book and created an animation based on his life but it is great to see your footage of him in before, during and after the war. Thank you.

    As a casual observer, he seems quite the polarizing figure among his contemporaries. I'm not sure what to make of that.

    Quintessentially English. Serious, well mannered, brave self effacing with good humour and no personal antipathy to the German pilots, well not in public.

      Er no, he was rude, obnoxious and a downright cad. He should have been court martialled for the destruction of an aircraft, he got away with it. He was a very nasty person. I et him a few times, did you?

    he wasn't drafted in 1939 - he was working for Shell and also receiving a 99 pound a year disability pension from the RAF. He approached the RAF on the strength of War looming hoping to once again be a pilot in the RAF. (Reach for the sky - Paul Brickhill)

    Bader was not a very nice person, he was rude and arrogant and he planted many young men with his stupid tactics. He was not popular at all

    • @SpeccyMan
      @SpeccyMan 5 років тому +10

      His job was not to win popularity contests, was it? And I would add that it isn't very nice to speak ill of the dead so think on that!

      He was a legless fighter pilot, one of the best. A man of great courage. Someone to emulate. There might have been those who thought he was arrogant, so what? It doesn't change who he was, a true hero.
