Thanks for your very informative video - the fault I had was it would intermittently power off and not power on - I replaced the battery (it was dead) I replaced Q2 ( I used a BC 846 SMD) and added the 100 ohm resistor. Pressed the power button and up it came - brilliant 🙂
Thank You! Got my DS1515+ working again. Did not know what was the real problem as the power light blinked and also alert led was blinking at the same time. So it was powering on but did not boot. Battery was 1,6V only. Tried to boot without the battery but nothing different happened. So I added 100 Ohm resistor, replaced 392 with 103 and changed the battery. After that it booted up like it should. Thanks again :)

I replaced the transistor, checked the 100OHM resistor and replaced the battery, and now the unit can turn on which is a step in the right direction, however, now the blue light blinks forever. Do I need to replace the NAND flash controller (PHISON PS2251-68-5 in this case) similar to the DS1813+ video you completed?
Oh looks like you did find the video here. No the DS1813 video is different and won't apply to your unit. You replaced the transistor, battery but didn't install a resistor? Just checked it? Does this mean you already had one in there? The blinking blue light fault for your unit is fixed with the 100 ohm resistor installation. If that resistor installation does not fix the fault then you could have an issue with your RAM memory. Replace those first I would say. If the fault persists, then most likely the CPU itself has failed beyond this repair method and needs to be replaced. We can do that for you if you would like.
Hey @NicksElectronicRepair, great video thank you. I have done the repairs mentioned and I am still having an issue with my unit., wondering if you can advise. The unit shuts down when it gets too cold. The unit is kept in the garage (It used to be in an air conditioned room at work where it had the same issue). Every time the environment gets too cold (Never freezing) it just shuts off, I bring it into the house or warm it up with a hairdryer and it turns back on, back in the garage overnight (in winter) and it turns off. Is this part of the capacitor/temperature change you mention in the video do you think?
Perhaps the CMOS battery. Batteries can be affected by cold. Heat and cold also affect the resistance of capacitors and resistors, so indeed caps could be at fault, but there are hundreds on that board. It could also be a cracked solder joint on the connections between the processor and the PCB or the processor itself could also be going out. What I would recommend is using your hair dryer, only heating a very specific section of the PSB at a time. Try and narrow down where the fault is coming from. If the processor is going out and needs to be replaced, which is rare but we have had to do it a few times, we can do that for you and make a video out of it. If this is the case message us directly our contact info is in the video description. That type of work is significantly more involved and the processor chips are pricey so it does come at a premium we can discuss it further and see if it makes sense for you. -Nicholas
Hi.Looks like you know what you doing :) I got a almost the same nas just the ds218+ and it does turn on properly everty 15 startup... blinking blue led .. PSU replaced,secondary RAM removed etc.. but still blinking. I think there is something like mainboard power issue. maybe Idea?
Not a clue, we have attempted to fix them before but the DS218+ has eluded us. We haven't really had a chance to really spend a lot of time on them yet. If you find something out, let us know I would love to do a video on them.

Hello Nicks! i have a 1512+ Synology told me to replace the Q2 resistor but I am unable to locate it and it's not the same motherboard as the 1515+. I can't believe Synology said they don't have the schematic for that board and that I should reach out/bother you. I guess i can add the 100ohm resistor also that people recommend at the same time. Did they actually name Nick's electronics repair specifically? I find it Ironic because we applied to become an authorized repair shop for them and they told us no because they already had all the people they needed and would have no use adding more shops to their authorized repair list. #2 They told you to replace Q2 and add the 100-ohm resistor? I can't believe I am hearing this as Q2 is not a part that commonly fails on your unit and you should not be adding a 100 ohm resistor to that board either. Either the rep you were speaking to misheard your unit model number or they don't know the difference between their 12 13 and 15 series units. The DS1512+ units are very different than the DS1515+ and do not require the same repairs. #3 What symptoms are you experiencing? I don't believe you mentioned the issue you are experiencing with your unit.
I have a 1512+ that just got the flashing blue lights when booting up. I tried popping out my drives first, but same result over and over. I'm gonna test my PSU next, but I dont think the resister trick for the 1515 is the same fix for the 1512. Any other ideas on how to diagnose the dreaded blue light flashing on a 1512+ ? Thanks!
Your PSU is fine if your unit has power and the blue light is showing up. That means your motherboard has a fault. I have a DS1515+ that appears to have dead ethernet ports. The RJ45 link LEDs don't light up when plugged in to known good switches using good cables. And of course it's not pingable, doesn't show up in DHCP tables, etc... Any Idea?
It is not as common but we have done those repairs before. The ethernet chip can short out and fail. This usually happens due to external factors such as lightning strikes or power surges that affect the modem/router and travel to the device via the ethernet cable. It is also possible the chip just failed although that is rare. In order to fix this issue, you most likely will need to replace both chips. If they fail because of a lightning strike or power surge, it is also possible the main processor also needs to be replaced. If that is the case, then this repair is still doable but much more involved.
@@NicksElectronicRepair On the same day of the breakdown there was also a breakdown of the 100oh resistor. I did this resistance repair and I was able to observe that the nas turned on correctly as my other synology nas do. But now I have this second fault that without Ethernet the NAS is useless, I have even tried to find the possibility of mounting a USB WiFi, USB Ethernet or a mini pciexpres but this NAS is not prepared for this. Do you think that changing the 4-port Ethernet chip is enough?

What I show in the video is everything that needs to be done in order to get the machine working again. You didn't do the power supply resistor replacement but that's okay that shouldn't be a part of the fix, more of a preventative repair/modification for long term success of the repair. This is probably a situation where it would make more sense to send in the unit for us to repair for you.
The resistor will never need to be replaced. It's not going to go bad unless it was not properly installed the first time. If the device fails again it's either because something else failed, or your processor fully failed in which case the processor should get replaced, not the resistor. I am willing to bet that if you replaced it a second time it didn't fix the issue the second time. Most likely one of the other parts I cover in the video has to be replaced to fix the unit.

I believe it's 0.25W but I don't remember and ill be honest I am a little lazy to go find the info. When in doubt just go with the 0.5W

what if the resister need to be replaced multiple times... I did this and a year later had to do it again....

What is the value of resistor 392 on DS1515 Power supply?
392 is 3.9Kohm or 3,900 ohms. The one we install is 103 which is 10k or 10,000 ohms.
