My guess is that he wasn't a cryptographer, or he'd have known that there's no point putting out cyphers of 13 and 32 characters, because those are just too short to analyze in any way. Though I suppose you could argue the converse: being a cryptographer, he knew that he could encode his name in 13 characters using any novel cypher and it could basically be decrypted to any 13-letter name. (Or they're just 13 random characters...)

In the old days, cyphers were computed by hand, so a short message meant less likelihood of mistakes. Even today, in situations like numbers stations, cyphers are often decrypted by hand by agents in the field who can't be caught with complex machines, and they're transmitted by low-bandwidth networks.

I found this episode rather disappointing. After listening for an hour, I still know very little about the decryption. All I got from the whole show was that this guy, an Australian mathematician and a Belgian warehouse guy worked together and, er, used computers and stuff. The Belgian guy wrote really efficient programs, and the killer made some mistakes when he encyphered the message. Heck, you didn't even tell us what the answer was!! For the record, the message (including mistakes) was, "I hope you are having lots of fan in trying to catch me that wasnt me on the tv show which bringo up a point about me I am not afraid of the gas chamber becaase it will send me to paradlce all the sooher because e now have enough slaves to worv for me where every one else has nothing when they reach paradice so they are afraid of death I am not afraid because i vnow that my new life is life will be an easy one in paradice death"
It wasnt solved correctly and many lines were just left. Zodiac did make an error in Z408. that is in the last section, that M should be an N. Those misspellings, those were intentional and hid the bigger clue from you. As I said, these are not ciphers. There is also no math in this.

My evidence is comparing the solve correct methodolgy and the solved translation to the incorrect 4 lines solved, clearly it is incorrect, that needs no proof. Oh yes Z13 and Z32 are entirely solveable. Thats Hindii, and Telugu. They dont have bomb data or name data. You pop them in translator like I told you keeping all special char intact.
