  • The Book of Abramelin purports to be a text of 15th century magic with a wide range of effects though, most importantly in modern occultism, communication with one's Holy Guardian Angel. The famous famous undertaking of these rituals was performed by Aleister Crowley at House Boleskine around the dawn of the 20th century. In this episode of Esoterica, we explore this fascinating texts, its rituals and history.

      Tysm Doctor, I enjoy learning about new things and never heard of this book until an hour ago so I researched it a tad and thankfully came across your channel where you have given me a good comprehension of this book in your opinion. Every point you made seems validated in your explanations. I normally wouldn't read this type of book anyway but I was intrigued by the part where it says something about contacting your spiritual guardian. I thought hmm, if it were possible, wouldn't everyone do it all of the time? So I wondered what it could possibly say. Not really a rabbit hole that I want to travel down tbh but I'm glad to have seen this video on the matter and I appreciate your expertise and knowledge. Such knowledge makes me want to dive into your other videos, so ty again!

    I am reading the Mathers text right now. A lot of what makes this book so fascinating is the emphasis on purity, piety, withdrawal, isolation, and the idea of enflaming oneself with prayer. I had seen Crowley use this wording in several other places and I never realized it came from Abramelin (and also from the New testament, I think).

      Word! I find it so ridiculous that so many people want to claim so much garbage when 90% of western modern esoteric thought, in my opinion, has a Jewish origin or influence. Yet, they want to buy or bully themselves into some kind of esoteric culture to build themselves up or try to control something they don't even understand must less cultural appropriate. Back around 1990/1991, I had a visual encounter with a grayish horrid face with a serpentine body that came out of a cloud like shimmering essence near the ceiling. It was terrifying but rather than remain in fear, I surrendered to it, changed my internal state and projected love onto it. The horrid face then changed into a beautiful smooth porcelain-like ivory radiant mask (sun-like) with brownish eyes. I remember there were illuminated silken strands flowing behind the face. After my projection of love, that face of elegance smiled at me and projected intense love back at me. I then felt although I was rising out of my body towards it as I fell back asleep. That is the only time in my life so far that I saw such an emanation, a discharge of divine radiance…once was enough to realize the universe is much more mysterious than we could ever imagine.

    Just found your channel, by chance or design... I completed the AbraMelin 34 years ago I am now 56. I read Crowley from a very young age and experimented with ritual magic including the Goetia, the Enochian rituals, and still own the original Magick in Theory and Practice. The AbraMelin is a harsh undertaking, though many of it's components can be stripped away as unnecessary. And by no means should Mather's 'version' be taken as the truth. The sequence can be boiled down to some simple, though incredibly arduous, disciplines. And few have the patience or stomach. I have been around the occult community for a long time now, since my teens. In that time I have met only a very few that have lived it real time...the rest are in mental institutions. The AbraMelin works...if you are clever enough to work it. I didn't get to meet my HGA, but I did get to meet all of my demons. Some I have overcome, some I may never will. My only advice if you want to take on the AbraMelin ? Be sure, be prepared to lose a lot and be ready for the consequences. That said, your 'life' will never, ever be the same again. Oh and be careful what you wish for... J.

    • @Chickenface12345
      @Chickenface12345 Рік тому +2

      ...what you wish for? Mh, would you care to elaborate on that? As I know it, the Abramelin isn't a ritual you undertake to have wishes granted. It can actually scrambre you and your life for the years to come, as a primary consequence.

    • @JayKaos
      @JayKaos Рік тому +3

      @@Chickenface12345 Hi, thanks for your reply. The overall aim of the sequence is to attain communion with your Holy Guardian Angel and thus a complete understanding of self and your motivations. Some take it literally in that they expect to meet supernatural beings (the film 'A Dark Song' is a good example of a modern working loosely based on the Abramelin) others see it as a mental exercise (Liber MMM is a comparable modern working). For me I met my demons, some as quite subtle 'isms' and learned behaviour, others as full on character flaws. Which when you become aware of them can be approached and adjusted. I didn't meet my HGA but I am given to believe on doing so you can ask for and receive your wishes. Whether that is on a supernatural level like the genie in the bottle, or an epiphany that allows you to give full focus to your true self, is I guess conjecture. In saying be careful what you wish for ? If you undertake the working be prepared to meet some darker aspects of yourself is all... Thanks.

    • @angelwalker979
      @angelwalker979 7 місяців тому +2

      @JayKaos so I'm trying to understand all this, I find it fascinating. Did Crowley summon demons at Boleskine? Or no? It all seems so complicated, the ritual I mean.

    • @JayKaos
      @JayKaos 6 місяців тому +1

      @@angelwalker979 Crowley aborted the ritual part way in but by then had put the sequence in motion. As even a witch will tell you, you always close your working or it leaves residual influences. Boleskine was left with those influences and Crowley had demons he didn't address. Hence dying broke and lonely in a pit in Hastings. The ritual itself if done from the old text is indeed complex. I took it down to its roots and dispensed with the unnecessary. However the requirements of discipline, mentally and physically remain the same and must be observed. If you choose to initiate the sequence read the original text thoroughly. Plan appropriately and remember that this is a process of change. I found all of my demons, recognising them in yourself is a victory all by itself. All of your demons can be dealt with once you expose them. I am happy that mine are under control. I'm not disappointed that I didn't meet my HGA, I rather think he or she is working behind the scenes and always has been. 2 things. If you haven't already watch a film called 'A Dark Song' it is the only Abra Melin based work out there and will give you an idea. 2nd, if you embark on the ritual be prepared for 3 months of change to many aspects of your life. If you have the determination that is... Good luck in your choices, here if you want to sound off. J.

    Excellent presentation. Thanks!
    Despite the confusion about the origins and authorship of the text, the two slightly different versions, and also the sharp contrast between the latter part of the book ( the squares) with the main corpus of the text, which focuses on the essential practices to be performed to summon the HGA, and evocation of the spirits, this is an incredible grimoire which stands in its own right. I would thoroughly recommend this ritual to anyone of sane mind. Provided one follows the instructions it is one of the safest methods to learn magic, whereby one is taught about purification, invocation, transcendence, evocation and .. a lot more. That has been my own experience.

    I've never studied anything from aleister crowley but I will say that one's "true will" reminds me of the idea of the over soul. This concept combined with the idea of reincarnation (human to human) brings about the belief that in your current life you can take actions (free will) that might go against what your over soul would want. Essentially "lying" to yourself or going against your true desires. Also as a sidenote in this ideology in between lifes, presumably, people's souls mutually agree to certain activities, such as teacher/student, marriage, etc. relationships, which constitutes our "destiny". Inso two people are bound to have children because they agreed to this prior to birth but free will allows one to break their promises, which I would imagine is not a good thing.

    • @wulfsorenson8859
      @wulfsorenson8859 2 роки тому

      Exactly right. Your true will is infact your pre birth plan or soul contract. The reason why magicians seek to reconnect with their HGA or whole self while still alive is so they can become a co creator of their reality rather than an unconscious victim of circumstance. How well this works in reality is a mystery. Natalie Sudmans NDE talks about how we reunite with our whole self at death.

    • @markwarrensprawson

      I tried myself twice, years ago, once in my early and again in my mid to late 20s. Both times I fell on my butt when it came to the self-isolation. That movie Doc Sledge mentioned, "A Dark Song", a place like the one rented by the female protagonist in that truly awesome film - a place miles from nowhere and nestled between nothing and bugger-all - would have been ideal in both cases. But as carefully as I planned everything, as resolute I was in getting through it, 21st-century life just had other plans. About 20 years lie between those two attempts and now and somehow, I still can't help regretting failing to get through it. My attempts had their moments of terrific and unforgettable profundity though. And while I have to admit to my failure as far as completing Abramelin is concerned, I did subsequently find ritual practices in more modern magickal systems that perform somewhat similar functions without making the demands Abramelin does. All the same, I'd like to try again someday. The whole thing is so pregnant with promise.

      I performed the Rite in 1997 with success, and have worked regularly with my Holy Guardian Angel ever since. • @markwarrensprawson
      @markwarrensprawson 3 роки тому +6

      @@sisu4134 Hi! Yes, I've nosed about in the Goetia quite a bit since then. I'm not half as dedicated to proper magickal practise now as I have been in the past. I do, however, have journals from back then that were fairly fastidiously kept. I was lucky enough to meet a few people who introduced and initiated me into quite a few systems of ceremonial magick. I'd be fooling myself if I claimed to believe that I'd gained "the knowledge and conversation of my Holy Guardian Angel". I will say though that I was hella inspired by something. Goetic work proved pretty mandatory when it came to getting on with things as far as the work in general was concerned. One ritual in specific I was thinking of when I mentioned more modern systems offering similar workings (similar only in certain limited ways, mind) was one I was introduced to while studying chaos magick. It's overall a bit of a weird one because it's based on a fusion of Sumerian spiritual concepts and science fiction/horror literature, specifically that of HP Lovecraft. The ritual is an initiatory one to do with the opening and passing through a series of nine gates, each based on a planet and its correlating deity. Things that make it "like" Abramelin are; it's a solo mission, it is performed over a fairly lengthy period of time (nine months, one for each lunar month), it involves fasting, as well as as much meditation on that month's deity one can manage, which of course involves study of that deity's nature, attributes, things sacred/abhorrent to it and last but not least, the learning by heart of each deity's invocation in what I was told is Summerian as well as opening and closing sections for each ritual in the same language. When the night comes for each gate one has been putting all this time and energy into, one doesn't really need any fancy stuff. It doesn't all need to be done at the same place. In my case, I pretty much popped out to a different spot that I'd been scouting out for each gate, one in a hidden place beneath the moon and open sky. Each gate is to be considered an initiation on its own until finally, you come to the ninth gate, symbolically passing into Chaos on its completion. It doesn't promise and "knowledge and conversation of your HGA," but I can say this much with certainty. It far surpassed my expectations and it affected me in truly profound ways, during and especially at the end of the ordeal.
      Gosh. You probably didn't expect a mini-essay from me. If you read this far, I just hope I didn't bore you to death. I wonder if you see what I meant though. Although it isn't as, sort of, austere as Abramelin and hasn't the history or tradition Abramelin has, and although it doesn't offer "knowledge and convo of the HGA," it's pretty well-suited to the general pace and lack of space to disappear off to of these, our current times. Like I also said though, I'm older, more mature, a little wealthier, and having another go at Abramelin might be a very worthwhile endeavor.
      Think I might watch "A Dark Song" again tonight. Peace. Hell, I hope I didn't bore the doody out of you. Light, life, love and liberty to all y'all! ;-)

    As usual, excellent content, Dr. Sledge. I'm curious about the use of the word "president" in the (translations of) medieval demonological grimoires, which otherwise describe the hierarchies in terms typical of European monarchies. What are the words translated into "president" in the English versions? How would medieval readers have understood the use of these words?

    • @TheEsotericaChannel
      @TheEsotericaChannel  3 роки тому +3

      The Hebrew word is נשיא which historically meant something like "person who has power by inheritance" and is related to the word for prince, נסיך. It was also used to indicate the 'leader' of the Sanhedrin, e.g., Yehudah HaNasi, as well. The modern sense of the word is 'president' or 'chairman' or something like that. A medieval person, assuming they knew Hebrew, would likely have understood it to mean 'person in charge' or something like that.
