      He really does do an absolutely great job with these videos, and explains things in very clear and consice, but also interesting and entertaining ways... but, just saying, I don't really think modern western news organizations are the best thing to compare him to. It's kind of like saying an Olympic track athlete is really fast compared to someone with no legs, or that a elite boxer is really good at fighting compared to the average retirement home resident... it's just not a necessary comparison to make, being that these days our news organizations are actually the absolute worst news sources we have access to

    One thing you didn't mention about the "dry foresty areas" in LA.
    It's not NATIVE vegetation, its swathes of non Native Eucalyptus trees that originated from Australia. The VERY SAME TREES THAT ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MASSIVE AUSTRALIAN BUSHFIRES!!!!!!
    Los Angeles is going through an Australian Bushfire, which NOTHING except torrential rain will extinguish! The eucalyptus problem was identified years ago, way back in the 1980's. Some areas like San Diego started eucalyptus removal and replacement with native vegetation like Oak, Aspen and Madrone trees. These are way, way less flammable than the oil filled blue gums that are all over California. Here's the problem, many LA residents LIKED the blue gums and actively campaigned to keep them, so removal of these invasive trees had a low priority. Meanwhile the media in Australia, the Californian Ecologists and botanists were begging for their removal citing all sorts of issues ( blue gum consume a lot of water, their leaves dont break down, few plants grow under their canopies plus they are literally living Molotov cocktails).

    • @lazyperfectionist3978
      @lazyperfectionist3978 День тому +5

      it's incredibly baffling to me that someone got the bright idea of keeping trees known to explode in high enough temperatures and _need fire + smoke for seed germination_ in an area that's not equipped to deal with the necessary maintenance that reduces their likelihood of exploding, such as removing ladder fuels (dead vegetation that "climbs up" a tree or other folliage from the ground) and any shed bark at the base of the tree during summer, like the aussies who came to california during the gold rush didn't know but that doesn't excuse people living in LA who campaigned against the removal who should know better having more access to resources about blue gums in the first place

    • @graphite2786
      @graphite2786 День тому +5

      @lazyperfectionist3978 And now the insurance companies will blame the city of LA for negligence and not pay out , leaving the victims to do a class action against the state😫. I'm also finding that the watermains had low pressure because LA residents left their sprinklers on to protect their homes😫 Water bombing helicopters couldn't fly because people were flying their stupid drones😫😫 and the roads were gridlocked because of Sightseers 😫😫😫
      I'm Australian and have lived through 5 major bushfires in my area. We lost one house ( the first fire) and learnt quickly that they are no joke. I'm not blaming the LA residents or their government - global warming and land developers played a large part. But surely the residents should have had a fire plan, built their homes out of less flammable materials and accepted the fact that getting rid of the gum trees may lower their house values but in the long run was beneficial. The government should have had a "Fires in Suburbia" action plan implementing an early warning system, a water diversion system to cut off water to the rest of the city to prioritise water for fire fighting, and a compulsory education program identifying fire prone areas and how to cope.
      Seeing videos of people in their homes filming their neighbours and backyards burning while calling 911 was absolute madness as an Aussie. If there are fires within a few km you evacuate. You grab your valuables and leave ASAP.

    Worth mention as well; those "green areas" are all very steep mountains. LA sits in the valley, but all the fanciest houses are built up them hills. It's very easy for fire to just rise right up those things considering the trees are on top of one-another. Every time I'm in Topenga, I'm more so surprised the houses haven't slid off the mountain since it would take just one serious storm to slide most of those bastards right off, but alas the lack of rain causes its own danger.

    Great explainer. People have short attention spans, last year the entire Northeast was covered in smoke due to wildfires up in Canada burning out of control. Here in NJ, the Pine Barrens can't stop catching on fire, but the residency is low in most of these areas because it's swampy and filled with pine trees, hence the pine barrens. Lived in Redondo Beach for a few years tho, no one gets that Los Angeles is a sprawling suburbia mainly, and a lot of those houses weren't built to withstand a major fire much less a sizeable earthquake. If anyone should pony up some dough, it's all those builders that put up tinderbox housing and charge way too much for it, as well as the planners who approve the deal and the inspectors that sign off on the stability of it all.

      @kurokaizen1889 it's also probably apathy.
      With a wealth divide as big as this and seeing rich people's general apathy towards most everything that doesn't directly affect them is infuriating.
      So I'm sure many people are seeing what they see as these same apathetic rich people crying and looking for empathy.
      (Ofc not everyone affected is rich)
      A good example might be looking at Zio Jamie Lee and how she's a staunch isreali supporter comparing LA to Gaza with no empathy.
      You shouldn't celebrate suffering, but you can't be too angry at a lot of these people.

    Another huge cause for the fire spreading was also ironically in the picture you showed, and that was the Palm Trees. They go up in flames like matchsticks, and when the fronds catch fire and then detach, the high wind allows them to sail off the tree and light other nearby vegetation on fire. And for anyone who doesn't know, there's a LOT of Palm Trees in LA.

    Those are some good reasons but two big reasons the fire was as bad as it was that you didn't mention: 1. We did not properly manage those forested areas, we let them become overgrown, 2. we did not properly manage our water reservoirs and resources in general. We live in Santa Monica right next to Brentwood which is right next to the Palisades, and we hike trails in the Santa Monica mountains (where the fire is) all the time. CA fires get as bad as they do because we have miss managed CA. Ya, the wind was a freak occurrence. But everything else I mentioned was actually something we could have, and can, control and should have and these fires would not have been so bad. As such a rich and powerful entity, CA, and Californias, have really got to do better. Born and raised SoCal.

    @Xexi for this. The Santa Ana Winds have caused and made fires worse before. This time around was the worst and most wide spread. Thank you for putting out solid info when so much BS is being said. Respect 🙏🏾

    From the perspective of someone who lives in LA and close to one of the fires but not in any evac zones, I've been keeping track of the air quality and the winds. The direction of the wind was in the direction of where my apartment is, and due to the doors and windows not being fully air tight, I remember faintly smelling smoke that got carried over from the wind. No embers, just the scent. The closer to 0, the better the air quality. It got to as bad as 399 in the area I lived in, and its just due to the winds carrying all that smoke.
    I had a friend who didnt live in Cali ask if they could just 'stop the wind'. And i was like 'you try stopping 80 MPH winds.'

    Resident near the Eaton fire here, I think this video explains everything near perfectly. Very accurate, but I would like to add one crucial detail that I myself witnessed taking place only a couple blocks north from me as things were hitting the fan.
    I can't speak for every distinct region in LA, but in my area at least a big component of the troubles regarding putting out the fires was yes, the fact that they direly needed air support yet couldn't get any, however there was also the massive factor of the water running out in fire hydrants for on the ground fire fighters. They kept running into low pressure fire hydrants if not just running out of water from them outright. We saw people using almond milk and dirt to stop the fires with neighbors also stepping in for each other around these parts.
    You could blame this on the fact that we haven't had rain in 8 months, our state wants to preserve wildlife to the point of denying new reservoirs being built/initiatives to create or reintroduce old lakes, or the pump systems not being maintained well. I personally chalk it up to a mix of all three.
    I'm really thankful for the efforts of the fire fighters who work around the clock only a couple blocks from where I live. While typing this, I'm on high alert since from what I've seen Friday Night and next Tuesday have a good chance of bringing high Santa Ana winds again. The people on the ground do such amazing work keeping the community safe, I just really hope they step up with the hydrants because it cannot be overlooked how insanely up against the wall those firefighters were when those winds hit their peak.
    Those winds before were insane, even in safe areas lampposts, trees, stop signs, you name it and it most likely had a chance of blowing out.

    I was living just outside of Boulder, CO a few years ago.(Dec 2021) Look up the Marshal Fires. Very similar situation. Extra dry environment, high winds. Only thing is it didn’t start at a distance, this fire started pretty much in the center of everything. As he was explaining the situation in Cali I just couldn’t stop having flashbacks to being back there. Winds so strong it’s has branches on fire flying to an area that’s yet to burn. Almost 1000 homes burnt down.
