How Bill Gates remembers what he reads
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 лют 2019
- Bill Gates is a voracious reader. In conversation with him, it's striking how frequently he cites things he's read. So he doesn't just read a lot of books, but he remembers what he reads as well.
We recently asked Gates how he does it, and he has a very specific approach, as you can see in the video above.
To start, Gates recommends getting a comprehensive overview of a topic, so that you can then understand where various details you might read fit in.

As far as I can tell Mr. Gates was implying that the best way to become a life long curious learner is to first understand the reality in its entirety by learning the big history. Big History is a concept of telling the entire origin story as best of our scientific knowledge and understanding, This has especially helped me, as a teenager I was very anxious about my existence nothing made sense to me, But when I learned about the universe, the origin of life this gave me a great sense of purpose to contribute to the collective knowledge of humanity so that those who would come after us can be better than we are.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing Abhay Sharma.
Same. My teenage years(still ongoing )of finding a meaning lead to depression leading to more why?'s. Questioning everything from my beliefs to am I really even here leading to curiosity and becoming a life long curious learner now. I heard somewhere that to learn we must get a main focus of a topic and see it has a tree, with added details of the topic as the leaves on the tree's branch.
Thats great, Abhay! Can you please share how you went about it? would you recommend any books/videos/documentaries? Would be keen to learn about it more.
I'm happy to hear you dove deep, I hope you learned or heard about quantum mechanics, neural plasticity, and metaphysics. life is images and thoughts of the mind expressed. your external reality is the densest part of your mind, without any separation. time and conditionality is just an illusion. we have all that we desire right NOW (the only time that exist).
reality is 99.99999999% empty space made of up energy. nothing is solid and reality exist in 2 states, its natural state of quantum wave form and its collapsed state of matter or actuality. we collapse that wave of probability by simply observing it. your computer, body, table, house, chair, office building are all made up of the same quantum particles but just formed in different building blocks that appear to be solid and seperate objects but in all actuality everything is the same and is connected in the quantum world. when you observe matter, what you are seeing is light photons emitting from that object, entering your eye, then electrical signals are created and travel to the back of the brain to the vision cortex where an image is created and is then projected back into your eyes. all reality is a perception created in your brain. your whole life has been your brains best guess of what it thinks reality looks like (brains perception). everything you are seeing right now is actually all taking place inside your dark brain. fascinating stuff man

It's like having a mental bookshelf you can store the knowledge in. When you read enough books you have context for everything and can put it in your library. Love the idea of a mental library.
Yeah! Just like Sherlock's mind palace.
I like his Chess analogy, it makes senses and ties his whole explanation neatly.
I dont think his analogy 100% correct. Good chess players can remeber the position of the pieces no matter how random it is!!!
I read this analogy in a book called Talent is Overrated.

You are right, I payed attention to that after reading your comment. Thank you
Schools are too focused on passing exams, getting high grades and then students forget everything they learn. Real "learning" starts when you're in the real world, picking up books and discovering your interests.

So true what he said about incremental learning. Most of the great mathematicians we learn about in school were philosophers (Pythagoras, Euclid, Decartes). They used math as a model to answer larger philosophical questions. When you understand this, mathematics begins to take on a much deeper and richer purpose.
are u helping usher to rape me better????? u know the things between us isnt love, and it cant be, becasue we dont understadn each other. u are not helping usher, u make him and me slave? u are making us slaves, did anyone ever tell u that?
It tends to be easier studying something when one can relate it to something else. Although schools try teaching the fundamentals of topics they often leave out;
1. The significance of the subject matter( Its use in real life and the interesting ways it can be used)
2. An intuitive way of understanding the topics.
Glad to see Bill studies in the way he does... pretty sure there would be a few more Bills if our educational systems taught us to learn this way.
Look at Daniel Kahneman's talk at google if you want the psychology.
If you want to learn fast, stop watching UA-cam videos, build up the habit of reading books 30 mins to an hour a day, and you will be able to learn fast over time.
Brian Ho millenials and GenZ don’t get that

The chess analogy was great.
Its no an analogy, it was actual research done
What he is describing is the principle that people are terrible at remmembering lists, but are incredible at remmembering pathways of items. relating a bunch of objects and remmembering essentially is def easier than remmembering lists in which the items within it are independant of each other, or are categorized to be so anyway.
I like the way you summary all the things.
do people have power, naturally, to control their minds, or is ur intelligence doing this amazing shit to me? are u controlling my mind with machines?
@@kylieeinstein No. You must train yourself extensively to be able to control your mind and use it most effectively.
Bill Gates: "chess players can't memorize random pieces on a chess board"
Magnus Carlsen: "Am I a joke to you?"
Good associative skills. Yes. Read everything everywhere. Conclude.
How to remember what you read? Write down the most meaningful parts of books and you will be able to skim the whole book by reviewing your notes. You could easily get 10 pages of notes out of a 350-page book. When you review, the rest of the book surges back into your mind.
Bill laughed after saying if u read enfough......means u have to read a lot
So basically he talks about creating a structure or a map of how things have unfolded and how they all interconnect with each other. And when he notes a discrepancy he can go back and have another look at the piece which does not fit correctly. I like his abstract thinking.
pay money so i can show you the rest of the video THUMB DOWN
What?
Damn, choosing to remain an ignorant arse just makes you stupid. And the problem with Stupid is it needs to prattle on emotionally about something which isn't the truth, or truth bent to make a tiny soapbox on which to spread the drivel spewing from Stupid's mouth. that is pretty similar to what I thought of myself... First develop fundamental understanding and a broad rough structure that you will keep adding onto as you keep learning new things.
It's like drawing, if you get super familiar with say anatomy then when you do a life drawing because you understand the body so well, you don't need to retain every section of line information to draw the subject - like a newb would - as someone familiar, you'd only need to observe the general masses and you'll be able to draw much more information while focusing on creating a better image.
perfect but the background song was a bit loud

I'm not even close to the Gates' intellectual level but still this rings very true in my experience. Great advice and well said. Thanks :)
Incremental Knowledge is much more easy to maintain
I see it this way, if you have a foundation it will stick if you don’t, it will not stick, sometimes you have to read, experiment and experience in first place the foundation to go more in depth.

"Incremental knowledge is so much easier to maintain in a rich way" -Bill Gates

We were taught to hold each others hands when in need. Why did you leave?
Ups another eugenic expert out of the game. Today is beautiful day. Sun is shining more and light is everywhere.
The broader your mind gets the more cautious and humble you'll be in accepting what you read...rather than saying(it's an absolute fact) you'll say(some scholars say...) or (there's a point of view says...)...etc.
Thank you sir
Turn the background music up please
I am so agree with the idea of when you try to learn new something profoundly, it is essential to start from the fundamental.
Today I learnt that bill gates values reading books and understanding what each piece of information he learns leads to and is useful for. Bill gates doesn't expect people to know or memorize the bigger picture but rather the things that make the bigger picture.
Great thinking Bill!
he predicted corona but can't predict his own divorce. lol
My old computer was wrongliy contected to Spotify then I say premium it's ask for membership I just listen
it's obvious why you can understand and remember what you read
So the point here is to "read more and the ability to remember will grow!"
With me its more if i like the book i can remember all details and now its getting better to remember boring things but there matter
Maybe teaching kids subjects isolated from each other is a mistake. Making math link into history, adding why certain math was developed, could add some tangibility to abstract math. This could, perhaps, help some kids remember and learn math.

how are you selling your interview with bill??? :\
You immediately see how his mind is programming-oriented even for seeing the world, including reading books!
We see free course everyday, we find free learning material everywhere, we actually save important articles to read or to learn across number of platforms. But unfortunately, it is hard to persevere that big flow of knowledge, without loosing most of it!!
I find the learning dynamics a very mysteries process specially when one is overwhelmed with what the internet can offer
wonderfull !!!

He used to go relax on Jeffrey Epstein's island, sit girls on his lap and read the sex stories of Jimmy Savile, Gary Glitter and Aleister Crowley. Then it ended with his favorite book "Bill like little Pink hole"

So where's the rest of this interview? Lol "it really bothers you when you read something and there’s an inconsistency" and it's frustrating to only get things out of context (which is why I ask the question about the entirety of this intvw…) because it would be interesting to know what Bill Gates thinks about other types of knowledge, not just incremental.
Lol this is exactly how I feel and have learn
Same feeling.!But I cannot remember the details, such as authors’ name. I only remember the book’s names, contents and concepts. Probably because English is my second language, and Google is convenient to search the details. One author called Richard, another one is also called Richard. How to identify them? Use books’ contents. So I usually forget their name, and I feel so sorry to the authors🥺
he is so much right about the chessboard and pieces. it's excellent I thought the same way.
