All the talk about his voice, let's not forget he is technically one of the best rock keyboardists ever PERIOD

AMEN to that! Time ages everyone, but Steve is a living legend with a catalogue of gorgeous music as a testament to his voice :).

@hawkhandsaw if It makes you feel better, I saw kansas last month. Their still kicking ass in 2011! Steve has improved a LOT! He isnt really dacing on stage anymore (the fact that he's freakin 60 and he's completley sober) but his voice still projects! Especially when he hit that high falsetto during "The Wall"... Robby Stienhardt isnt in Kansas anymore. But David Ragsdale is, he is the best violinist in the world and he plays rhythm guitar too!

Yes I'm sure they were great. Too bad I didn't get a chance to see them again. I saw them in 1988 or 1989 and it was rough.

It is too bad that you did not see them earlier.
I saw them headline for the Cars and Thin Lizzie at the Cow Palace in 1979.
I saw them 2 more times before they broke up.
That was when this band was absolutely flawless and ruled the planet.
I saw them after they broke up and they were not the same.

Has Rich Williams lost like 150 pounds since this video? He doesn’t look like the same person!

Don't mean to sound like sour grapes. When you're 18 and go to see your heroes, you have really high expectations. But, as we all know, they are never what you thought and boy is it a let down. You take it hard when you're a kid. Today I know a lot more about the band than I did then and I no longer feel the way I did. They will always be my favorite band.

My story continued...Kerry and Dave were both gone as well, and as I said when Steve opened his mouth, his voice sounded like ground glass. I went with three high school buddies and we were all huge Kansas fans. Needless to say we were all really disappointed. Steve hardly played any keyboards at all and was jumping around so much that he was out of breath and could hardly hold a note! I was so looking forward to that voice.I still love Kansas and would love the chance to see them again, though.

I'm so sorry you consider yourself perfect. Give the man a break

@@cindysmith9777 Come on Cindy. That has nothing to do with anything. I never said, nor do I believe that I am perfect. I simpy reported what my experience was and my disappointment at what had become of one of my musical heroes and I have that right especially when I paid my very hard earned money to see them. I know very well that Steve had gone through some tough times, in part due to his ego (at that time), and he was into well into his coke days when I saw him and his voice was destroyed from the years he performed in his band Streets as well as the drugs and he might have still been smoking at that point too. Steve admits in interviews that this was a personal low point for him and he is embarrassed by it. He wanted to be Mick Jagger or David Lee Roth. Fortunately, he grew out of that and his voice and keyboard skills improved markedly. Unfortunately, I never got a chance to see them again live. Happy New Year and I hope no hard feelings.

I saw them in 1989 at The Chance in Poughkeepsie not knowing what to expect because I had never even seen any pictures of them. The tickets were only $18, then. When they came on stage and Steve was jumping all over the place with his cowboy-rockstar outfit, I was a bit taken aback. Robbie was nowhere to be seen(one of my main reasons for loving Kansas and wanting to see them live), but rather a new guy in spandex shorts and no shirt. Rich Williams was as big as a house and when Steve sang...

Kerry is miles better than Rich, sorry I mean at guitar. In the past Rich would have been called as rhytm guitarist or something like that. Without of Kerry and Dave there's no salt and pepper. I really miss them, but I know it's over.
