Interesting - never heard of the movie
It was directed by Martín Scorcese. De Niro, Joe Pesci were in it. Stone won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a drama and an Academy Award Nomination for Best Actress! It thought you did know about the movie.

As much of a whirlwind of chaos as Courtney has been, Hole’s first album Live Through This is one of the greatest rock albums of all time. Still listen to it today. Searingly brilliant. I love all of Nirvana’s albums too, and several other artists who are considered Grunge, or from that somewhat broad category. But yeah, Madonna handled this messy moment with perfect poise and dignity.
Yeah Courtney was giving beyond hot mess here 😂. It was the throwing of makeup compacts for me. What if she had hit someone 😔

There's a little backstory here that needs to be told. In the early 90s Madonna launched her own record label called Maverick (Erotica was the first record to be part of it). She was looking for new talent to sign, and wanted to sign Courtney Love's band Hole, but they decided to go with someone else. So from then on there is a grudge match between these two. In fact, there is an interview (shortly before Hole became famous) where the interviewer asks Madonna "what about Courtney Love?" and Madonna responds "who's Courtney Love? -- burn!). Of course, Madonna signed Alannis Morrisette and she had one of the biggest records of the decade (and maybe of all time) with Jagged Little Pill. Courtney hated on Alannis and always thought she was a big phony (which is why she mentions Alannis in one of these clips dismissing her for not writing her own songs). So, it's a twisted story that culminates in this bizarre and sad interview LOL Madonna is sporting her Valley of the Dolls look and just brushed her off... 🤣
Sort of true - Maverick wanted to sign Hole but they couldn't agree on terms (which is very common) and Hole signed with Geffen instead (which is where Nirvana was signed). I don't think there was a grudge over that. Madonna did say in an interview shortly after this that she was fascinated by Courtney "in the same way you're fascinated by a crazy person in Central Park" or something to that effect. Courtney has gone back and forth between saying nice things about Madonna and trashing her. I think she secretly wanted to be Madonna (or at least be her friend) and was just jealous of her success. She attended M's "Tears of a Clown" show in 2016 and fan-girled out. In this MTV interview, Courtney also praises Alanis's voice - but she was (again) jealous of Alanis's success. I just think people like Courtney and Kurt looked down on anyone who did "pop."

It made for good TV though. I was a teenager and loved both of them so I thought it was funny. It could've gone worse if it was 2024 lol
This was such a hilariously awkward moment, and I do remember watching it live as a teenager. Madonna held her cool so well while getting those digs in, and I completely forgot about Courtney falling off the stool! Also loved M's hair on this night, we hadn't seen her with long hair in years at this point.

As hilarious as falling off the chair is, it's also very sad. Courtney lost her husband 16 months prior, and grief presents in a lot of different ways.

When Courtney got off drugs, she was actually quite interesting, and she is quite a good actress too. She won a Best Actress Golden Globe for "The People vs. Larry Flynt". Here she was out of hour gourd.

Interestingly, Madonna and Courtney had more interactions after this during the time Courtney got sober. They were friendly for awhile but I don't think ever became actual friends. Empress you have reacted to several Hole songs including Celebrity Skin and Malibu. Courtney was cleaned up and looking good during the Celebrity Skin era.

It was also interesting when George Clooney ditched her kiss on stage that night. He was so rude. She won an award and when George Clooney handled the award to her she tried to kiss him on the cheek and he turned his head away. What an asshole. By the way Madonna was looking HOT that night 🔥😍

I remember seeing that. I think maybe people made a big deal out of nothing. It seemed like an awkward moment where she went in for a kiss and he didn't expect it and turned his head. I don't know. @@EmpressReacts she has several times. In a live chat recently she said she got 100% sober for the first time four years ago. I think the times when she has seemed sober in the past she was at the very least on doctor prescribed medication.
I remember seeing this live. It was so awkward you felt like you were watching something you shouldn't be. I swear a friend, my mom and I thought madonna was going to forget herself, and we were going to see the Detroit come out of her. That look she gave when Courtney threw the compact screamed, "Aw hell naw, I'm fittin to go to jail tonight." If she had put hair up, that would have been it. We always say you take the native out of Detroit, but you can't take the Detroit out the native. Courtney should thank madonnas publicist.

she did.. they had a special when the Ray Of Light album came out on MTV and it showed Madonna in the studio recording the album and on set for the Frozen video
MTV was so rock'n roll back then, very entertaining it looks. Also the female presenter at the end, Courtney had issues with her too and i think they had a bit of a shade off as well. Tabitha Sören is her name and she gave as good as she took. She is notorious for having a a good vibe and banter in all her 2PAc interviews but it seems like she hated working with Mariah Carey as she famously flipped out on Mariah's publicist live on camera when her interview was shortened due to asking critical questions and some about her divorce to Mottola at a time, where Mariah wanted to have that clean cut American princess image. It's hilarious seeing an interviewer shouting at Mariah's team how its a nightmare working with them and Mariah sitting there unbothered, just listening lol 90s MTV was amazing.

It's called Tabitha Sören vs Mariahs publicist. ;) To be fair, she is a good interviewer though and her questions were not out of line so i get why she was so annoyed at the second she asked the first critical question, she was muted and the interview stopped. She made damn sure they knew how she felt about it lol

Madonna did what any sane person would do when the bull enters the china shop...get the hell out. But she did so gracefully, after taking a couple swipes at the bull while not mussing her hair or new Gucci outfit.
That outfit, btw, was straight off the runway and became one of the most worn, and knocked off, looks of the year. It put Tom Ford on the fashion map.
But of course, Madonna wore it first.

Was Courtney unhinged it would appear so if you had no backstory.(not saying I know otherwise) Was she on something, maybe. I'd thought Madonna might have relished that opportunity to go toe to toe with someone she obviously thought was out of line given the fact she made a hasty exit. But maybe she was caught on a bad day, the old saying fate rarely calls upon us at a moment of our choosing. But I can easily see that your opinion that Courtney was a train wreck there is probably the most likely to be true. And maybe Madonna was right to take an early exit. Only point I'm getting at is funny how people hate controversy even when the controversy is justified.

I really admire Madonna’s response here. It was an odd time for her where it seemed people enjoyed trying to set her up to look bad. In the same era there was an American music awards ceremony that decided to use Sean Penn as her surprise presenter for an award coming out from behind her which just seemed really low and as she said on camera “that was really dirty”
