We're probably about the same age, which I, too, am familiar with all the different covers of this song. That being said, you're right, it's like they combined influences from them all and incorporated their own spin, too.
Thanks for your reaction! For your Sippin On A Song theme, you would also love Voice Play's "Tennessee Whiskey". I agree with you about the combination of known styles and versions of this song with a Pop update and love how Omar's riffs gave it a traditional Irish "keening" feel to make it my favorite version of the song.
Love your take on this. The only version I was really familiar with was from Peter Paul and Mary, so love the lack of instrumentation. They make up for it with the different qualities of each vocalist as well as the unique musical influences. To see more of Omar in the middle, try one of my faves Carry On Wayward Son, Superstition, Dream On And their EPIC Dragonborn/ Skyrim.
Love their version - I was only familiar with Thin Lizzy's version before! So - L to R, Geoff Castellucci, Eli (Ellie) Jacobson, Omar Cardona, Cesar De La Rosa and Layne Stein... If you haven't done it yet, would love you to react to their cover of 'In The Air Tonight'...! 😉
I think that the only version I'd heard before was Peter Paul and Mary's (Gilgarra Mountain) and that was decades ago, obviously. Voiceplay is better. Every time.
Clearly you have some familiarity with VoicePlay. Have you heard their cover of Metallica's Nothing Else Matters? Because that is one that is not to be missed.
This song goes back to the mid 1600s. I heard it 60 yrs ago when my Irish great uncle was lobbying hard for my dad to refill his whiskey. This really is a great version. Have you done Nothing Else Matters (Metallica). I concur with acorrado5529 to do Tennessee Whiskey is great.

Geoff's personal record low F1 in chest. ❤
This has become one of my favorites from VoicePlay. These harmonies and the arrangement are fantastic! Loved your reaction! ❤
Great reaction to my favorite group! They are all amazing! 😅
Thank you for a great analysis of this song and VoicePlay. Please reaction to more of their songs and I'll definitely look for your posts!
My favorite version of this song and I've heard a lot of different ones over the years.
WA-HOO! have you listened to VoicePlay's Tennessee Whiskey yet? Their cover is delicious!
And "Carry on Wayward Son"!
Love, like you, the melding of different genres! You had it right ... I need to sip a glass of good whiskey to make this perfect!
While it doesn’t have whiskey in the song, listen to their cover of In the Air Tonight, it is beautifully done.
