Setting up a still life and draw objects from life will be difficult at first but as time passes you will start to see your skills increase and improve significantly. These still lifes don't have to be complex at all, they can be as simple as a cup on a kitchen table. Experiment with different lighting effects by adding a small desk lamp and shine the light from different angles. This will also help you to better understand shadows and light and how your light source can affect the object you are drawing or sketching.

thank you so much you are inspirational. just started art at 85 years so a lot to learn,
WHAT!!!!!!! YOUR 85 YEARS OLD!?!?!?!?!?!?
Margaret Hide nice good luck!!
proably dead now
Shiv NiceGuy Hey that's not nice
Oohhhh thast good
I am 51 years old. Art has always been my worst subject. But I've just spent the best evening of the year watching your first six videos and drawing. Absolutely fabulous. Thank you.
David Lennon ,same is here
40 here.
You’re a great inspiration. I hope you’re still doing well and going at art after three years.
wow
I’m still watching these vids I’m 12 and I don’t have art as an elective for my school this quarter so I’m watching this vid just to get a better
I’ve been watching UA-cam forever, but for some reason it just hit me how freaking cool it is. We can literally learn how to do anything we want, for free. I hope YT is compensating you appropriately, dude. Because this is super cool.
Thank you, yes UA-cam is an awesome resource no doubt. I make enough for groceries every month, so that's something :)
@@SchaeferArt thank you for these videos .
@@SchaeferArt we appreciate you
Hands down the most underrated drawing guy on youtube, he deserves way more subscribers.
73 years old and learning to draw with you. Having such fun. So relaxing trying out your guidelines, etc. Thankyou so much.
you can't imagine how many people are inspired by you to draw
and your lessons are so helpful, clear, easy to understand and relaxing
you are so dedicated to what you are doing, I guess you have a good personality as well
thank you so much for your efforts and time!
Brandon, you have given me the courage to pursue drawing again! In my younger years, I would try and fail miserably. I stopped doing it because I thought I was no good at it. I’m learning that it’s something I have to practice at through your videos. I can train my brain, and not give up! I finally have the chance to do this, as I’m 62 years old, and newly retired! Thank you.
Brandon, you are an awesome teacher....it is because you simplify the process that helps us learn....you don't over-complicate it which helps the beginner and gives us the belief that we can do it! Thank you so so much Brandon!
Love your style of training. You are down to earth, you explain everything well, and I love that you reiterate in each lesson to use what you have, and not to worry about drawing exactly what you see. You suggest many ways of accomplishing what we want to achieve without feeling like we are doing it wrong. Love your style and knowledge. Thank you Brandon, I will continue to watch and put your training into practice. I am subscribed.
Yep hes a chill dude. says peace at the end of the videos, tells us we can do it our way, has that chill dude look.
Exactly right :)
@@SchaeferArt i know that it's not exactly the right time, but wanted to ask if you could make a video on how to improvise with pencils that don't allow you to shade well
Simple but beautiful presentation. In all my 60 years of life never did any painting or sketching. But after retirement just felt like learning this art. So I searched UA-cam and found your videos are best for me.Thanks
Just love your common sense teaching. I’m 78 years old and enjoying every minute. Thank you
Thank you for this demonstration, and especially the tip about lighting. Changing the position of the light made everything look so much more dynamic - it really helped me see the all different values and where the shadows are.
Glad it was helpful!
Now this is what I call a "true" artist. I really am enjoying your drawing videos. I'm learning so much. Thank you so much.
Thank you for sharing your skill and talent with those of us who have not had (or taken) the chance to explore art and the creative process. Your videos and easy-to-understand instructions have kept it from feeling overwhelming and impossible Thanks again!
This is the first time I'm called an artist, feels reeeealy good :)

What a nice channel, the six videos on a Row, and I don't wanna stop! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I know I'm typing in the past as this video was made many months ago, but thanks for another video Brandon. Don't worry about the 'you knows' and the speaking, it sounds totally fine to me and you come across as very sincere, just trying to give some good lessons for us.
And proportions would be something I'd like to learn more about (u may have covered it in ur later videos but I'm going in order :P lesson 7 here I come).
NinjaVillage Thanks for the feedback.. I may add some more videos to this series eventually. I'm not totally thrilled with detailed drawing and such, so I don't go into super detail or depth in the videos but I wanted to make videos that help the average beginner to begin sketching and drawing and understanding concepts.
***** Oh okay no worries, it's your channel so you focus on whatever you enjoy most, but more drawing videos would be AmAzeBingLing - making up words :P
I might be a minority of ur viewers who want more drawings vids though lol, so I won't have any hard feelings if the drawing series ends :) what you've shared so far has been really helpful.
LamixFace love it. Help me and others.
Brandon, You are very good at telling us how to draw and shade. Thank you so so much. I am new to all of this and I am glad I found your videos.
You explain well and make the drawing so fun and I enjoy learning from you. This is my six vedio and I learn a lot and I am practicing and I think you are excellent. Thank you very much for taking your time and teach.
Thank you! Cheers!
love your art I'm 9 years old I have learned a lot from you thank you
That's great!

Got my first sketch book and pencil set. I really appreciate these tutorials. I am becoming aware of concepts I was oblivious to before. I'm up to lesson 6. Thanks again!
Exactly what I need to hear and keep hearing. It's training . . . training the mind . . . it takes many many hours. . . . training to see. My lower mind is relentless with the thoughts which make me impatient, judgmental, feeling hopeless, like a failure and unworthy. I watch these thoughts and know they are just the inner critic. It interferes with the joy of the process. It really helps when you tell us to have fun with it. That helps us keep a proper perspective and not take it so seriously.
Well said! I think having fun is something to focus on most of the time. I know it won't always be fun in reality but that's usually why we got into it in the first place and we usually forget it haha.
most underrated art teacher on youtube u explain stuff very well and ive improved soooo soooo much because of u
Amazing, Thank you so much for this ABSOLUTE PERFECT SERIES. You make drawing less scary to start and easier to understand for all ages and levels. Grateful for your TIME & all your EFFORT. You are Amazing... Truly...

You are so special. I loved your still life. I thought you would have us sketch it. This was five years ago ... you're probably a real rock star by now.
I love your encouragement! It is making sense for me as a new hobby. I always thought I can’t draw but was forced into early retirement and now I am using your videos to train my brain!
Me and my husband are learning to draw together and we agree that your videos are the best tool we have found. Thank you.
Happy to hear that!
I am really enjoying watching this series of videos. I have realised that it's ok to get it things wrong and practice until you find the right technique. Have picked up a set of pencils for the first time in 30+ years and rather than doing my day job as an engineer where things have to be precise it's nice to follow your advice and experiment.
I was never the kind of person to spend time on youtube but i really enjoy this and im glad people like jim exist:)
I'm brand new. Thanks for breaking this all down. I keep trying to draw flowers, simple ones to watercolor. Hummingbirds too. It all looks off. I know it's perspective, but that's harder to comprehend for me on living things. Buildings, I get, but nature is hard for me. This is all so great! Really, thanks! I'm following you now.
Glad it was helpful!
Modern Bob ross. Thanks for the videos. With your voice being so calm it's super easy to listen to you.
Such an adorable lesson. You remind me of the cool teachers I used to have in school.
Wow, thank you!
Thank you so much for your videos and for taking the time to make them. I started three days ago - just watching one or two a day and doing what you demonstrate and then sketching a few things around the house. Am loving it and very grateful. Thank you again. Also hope YT is paying you something at least
Wonderful! Glad to hear that. Have fun with it. I get a little bit each month, so it’s helpful in some way 😊 funds more art supplies at least
Just few weeks back started drawing, I was thinking that I wouldn't do untill I get something very special for start like fency utensils etc. Your that video encourage me a lot to start. Thanks dude.
Go for it!
Could you please suggest me some drill exercise for improve my straight lines, curves and shadings.

Dude, you're the best art teacher I ever had 🥰.
Best tutorial videos for beginners ever! Really helpful.

Me too I agree
Thanks Brandon, I have been enjoying your videos. I'll be taking some lessons this winter and these have been a very good starter point for me until then. My mom was an artist and wish I would have taken more lessons from her before she died. For the one year anniversary coming up of losing her, I really want to start this new journey in my life. My son, and his daughter are very gifted in this area. Again thank you! You're a nice guy!

"You're an artist''. That's what I needed to hear now. Thank you so much.
I watched 6 videos in one night and got a lot better. Thanks a lot!
Love the way you teach friend! So so so natural, i really feel connected. Not like when i see some video and in a minute I am like-" eh you can't do that." Watching your videos(while i know how great you are at arts) i feel like you have been exactly where i am and are just telling us how you grasped things! Thanks a lot man, really. Wouldn't have been able to draw beyond an apple if it weren't for this holistic series.
Glad to hear :)
i am a college student just to releive my strss and to spend some usefull time i chose this hobby and after watching your videos i really feel like i chose the best hobby THANKYIU BUDDY may GOD bless you

I'm a beginner and loving this series. I'm going to be practicing still life for a long time till I can get it down. I have a question for anybody
Where do you start with your still life drawing? Do u start with the objects in the front? Start with the biggest objects to help with proportion? I'm having a hard time figuring out the best starting point so I would love to hear what y'all do.
Thanks!
Kimra Does , I would suggest you start by blocking in the major shapes of the composition lightly, from largest to smallest, as your eye leads you. To help prevent any skewing of your drawing, one tip is to hold your drawing reversed up to a light, and look through the back of the paper at your drawing. This will help you catch any proportion issues very quickly!
Kimra Does x
I would suggest you to start with the things you are using in your drawing sketches like geometry box or a simple book or the stationary cause I am the beginner too
You are awesome! Finding your videos is a god sent! I’ve been in a real depression. ,I’ve been a quadriplegic for almost 4 years. For the first time I feel interested and capable 😀 Thank you ❤️
I really love your drawing lessons and how you simplify everything and make it really easy to do.
Thank you so much for your efforts.
XOXO ❤
You've got some amazing teaching skills! I've always been an "art enthusiast", but I've never been able to draw properly until I found your channel. You make it sound so simple, and that makes it easier for us (at least for me) to understand the techniques, to pay attention to details I've never given much thought before... Thank you and keep up the good work! ;)
Thanks Brandon. You're a real Teacher and real Artist. I am 64, retired and I will try it.
I’m on your 6th video back to back and you are the first artist I’ve watched and I’ve already learnt so much - thank you 😊
Brandon, you have made drawing a relaxing pursuit. Ive been stressed out before trying not to make mistakes. I had a grumpy, not very patient instructor. No pressure here. Thanks!
No pressure at all 😊 in the end, it’s all about enjoying the process.
today is this first day I've started drawing and i'm really excited for this journey, you're really good at explaining!!
Have fun!
You are a good teacher with a lot of good ideas 🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍👌👌👌
Thank you 😊
I have always drawn the simple cartoon type of artwork and never used shading very much and you are helping me to learn the art of shading.
Ik this is 6 yo but this guy is awesome been watching the series and I love it man great job
I am taking a sketching class Introductory, also novice painting...I'm interested in shading with pencil and acrylic ..your natural ability to understand your audience mentioning "having fun with your work" whatever it is...
I just found these vids and am going through them by # order and you do explain really well. That red apple in that lighting is so interesting and beautiful! I like the little setup you did put these and it gave ideas and inspiration! I have more experience in photography so I like when negative space has pleasing shapes. The shading the orange on the jar makes is also very interesting to see. I have admittingly been cheating with practicing the foundation and so far has mostly, as far as true study goes, I have been going into drawing basic shapes and put them together. I am very animal fanatic and they are extremely hard to get down so by admitting to myself that I have been cheating with this non-animal foundation I think I can get in my perspective/mass or form/proportions a better boost cause that is where I am stuck. I have gotten great at drawing and seeing basic shapes in everything though the past few months. Thank you for these videos, they are very interesting! I did get to try 1 point perspective in school as a pre teen and forgot about it, and learning 2 point was very inspiring! Same with thumbnailing, I need to start doing that!
This video is 9 years old but it is still one of the best instructional video I have watched. I just got back to drawing and my 6 year old son recognizes the things I drew. 1 week ago he would have just said I drew some boxes.
Glad to hear that :)
My first time seeing your face! You have been teaching me a considerable amount. Thank you for sharing the knowledge and skill you've taken time to acquire, along with the willingness to share. I have full intentions of learning these lessons well.
Happy to help!

Thank you sir for making these classes.I always got bad grades in drawing subject but now I got know that I was always using a wrong approach. Now I can be better.
I know I'm four years late but still maybe you will read this. i can already draw decently but i decided to go back to the beginning to learn all the basics and only 6 videos in I learned so mutch and I can already see improvement in my own drawings. thanks a lot... if you still read this
Been watching your videos for only a couple of days but I've been able to draw better than I've ever been able to. Thanks so much 🙏🏾
You have taught me everything I know about drawing! Just started painting very late in life. Really appreciate the basics. You are a very good teacher, btw, clear explanations, easy to follow. Keep making videos!!!!!! Many thanks!
we just don't learn from your videos but also enjoy them as much you do while making it. you are amazing and the thing most amazing about you that you don't need those fancy things it's just plain simple beautiful art.
I have just recently started your videos and am a brand new "artist", thanks for your videos. I am learning a lot and enjoying them.
