- A man in his early to mid-twenties died Sunday afternoon after falling to their death from El Cajon Mountain, also known as El Capitan, in the Lakeside area.
A man familiar with the area, Billy Ortiz, spoke with CBS 8 about the infamous rock climbing location where the victim died.

Thank you to the folks who brought down this man's body. Heartfelt condolences to those who knew and loved him.
they waited a full day
@@KrazyKrzysztof Could have left him
@@KrazyKrzysztof Yes, the ‘professionals’ decided it was unnecessary to risk the lives of others to recover his body in the dark and in treacherous terrain. Im sure it caused distress to the family, but it was the smart thing to do and I’m sure the family wouldn’t want anyone killed or seriously injured.
@@KrazyKrzysztof better late than never
They brought the body up not down 😆..
Sheriff called him a solo climber, which means climbing alone, but usually with gear. It should be noted he was a free soloing, climbing unroped. When I look back at thirty years of climbing experiences, the thing I’m the least proud of and feel the most stupid about is the multiple free solos I did. I’m lucky I made it through my 20’s.
You were just a pusc in your youth
dumbass
Very brave to post such an opinion when someone dies. It’s like the ultimate Q.E.D. Isn’t it?
Makes you think twice.
Or triggers you it seems
It's something a lot of people need to read. Climbing is risky enough. But some gear saves you from a mistake.
Free soloing guarantees that even a minor error means game over.
The survivorship bias because of a handful of popular free soloists doesn't change the fact that going without gear tends to be lethal within a few climbs.
Love and strength to his family and friends. I lost my fiancé at 34 ( also a solo climber) Heartbreaking 💔
I hope you find him. If I had to guess, you’ll be able to find him at the bottom of a mountain. Good luck! Thoughts and prayers ❤

That's subjective

The ground gets there quicker than you think. I'm not sure how quick you can comto terms with it.. like many crashes in extreme sports.. you get a moment or two of.. "Oh f#*k...f#*k..f####**kkk" annnnd now youre groaning in pain..or dead.

when I see someone doing high risk unprotected activities, I leave the area. I do not want to live with witnessing the results for the rest of my life. watching a dog killed by a car taught me this. the family has a lot to deal with here. empty words like "he died doing what he loved" come to mind. others be damned. where I live skiers basically commit suicide by avalanche, in areas widely publicized by avi forecasters as being too risky to visit.
Livin on the Edge can have its downsides for sure. I would imagine this young man wouldn’t have wanted to go any other way. God rest his soul.

This incident itself is horrible, being that this guy was in his 20s. But there are much worse ways to go than instantaneous death from a sudden stop.. more than likely, and hopefully in this instance, you'd feel nothing but an adrenaline pumping free fall.

Every dead climber, at one point in their lives, was a highly motivated individual.
Climbing rocks & smoking rocks will both get you get you high but it turns outs climbing rocks is actually far more dangerous than smoking rocks. Yet climbing rocks is totally legal while smoking rocks has always been illegal.

When I first saw the headline, I was hoping he had been rescued. Very sad and my heart goes out to his family. I can only imagine when he was a little child how he loved climbing on those colorful plastic rock climbing walls they make for kids to practice on. And how excited he must’ve been the first time he did it for real. Sorry his young life had came to an end like this and so soon. RIP to the wild and free, brave overcomer.
I guess he wasn’t fooled by the rocks that Jenny had.
Its a pretty great experience the first time you climb real rock. Those colorful holds aren’t just for kids. On the side of the jungle gym they are, in the climbing gym they’re hard to hold.
The headline that says "body recovered"?
Well, he died doing what he loved. Not many people can say that.

It doesn't matter when you get dementia.
It's still better to die young, doing what you love, as opposed to dying while you lay in a puddle of your own excrement; a drooling mindless idiot.
Maybe you get to climb for 50 years without incident, and then you fall to your death. It happens when it happens. This guy just went a little early. So be it.
BTW, here's a bit of info for you:
"For most people with Alzheimer's - those who have the late-onset variety - symptoms first appear in their mid-60s or later. When the disease develops before age 65, it's considered early-onset Alzheimer's, which can begin as early as a person's 30s, although this is rare."

Climbers who fall on K2 are very quickly torn to pieces by high rotational forces, and climbers below only see the bits and pieces tumbling down the mountain.

Dang, i hope it wasn't equipment failure, that's scary, maybe an anchor came loose? We depend on our anchors and equipment and get comfortable that they are safe. But human error does happen. It's fun, yeah, but is it worth dying for, ask a dead climber, we don't know. its too easy to say someone died doing something they love, i sure as hell don't want to fall having fun and die, to hell with that.

There actually was a guy a few years ago who got stuck between rocks while hiking. After not being able to get free and realizing he would eventually die there, he cut off his arm to free himself. Somehow, he didn't bleed to death.
