    You should make a video comparing the 50mm to the cropped 50mm mode. I’m sure the image looks better on the physical lens but I could see using it occasionally especially since the RAW has the full image

      That’s a great idea. Most likely I will stay away from the digital crop/zoom modes. But I am curious about how they look as well. Thanks for checking out the video.

      @@jwanger142 sorry, let me clarify. I do use the crops (even on my sony a1) when I need the reach and I can't physically get closer, but I would say that happens only occasionally. I;ve just trained myself throughout the years to walk in closer whenever possible. it's just an old habit of mine.

      The entire benefit to the new 40mp sensor, is being able to use the crop modes. I have the vi and both conversion lenses. 90% of the time, I’ll carry the camera on its own with no conversion lens. When I travel, I will bring the conversion lenses. Now I have 28/35/50/70/105 in a small/light package. I won’t use the conversion lenses all the time, but they’ll be there if I need them. Everything fits in a small sling. With ibis and 10 bit 422 and 4k/60, I have a little pocket rocket that can do photo and video, don’t have to carry any nd filters, and everything fits in a small sling.

    What nobody is addressing is that these converters open up more possibilities in combination with the "digital crop" which allows the WCL to become an equivalent 41mm lens, and the TCL a 70mm lens, both at a reduced resolution of 20mp, or if choosing the reduced resolution of 10mp the WCL turns into a 58mm lens, and the TCL a 100mm lens.

    Great video! I used these conversion lens with my x100V. As time went on, I tended to not use the 50 mm equivalent lens at all (too bulky and heavy). With the 28 mm equivalent lens I would tend to spend the entire day with it on. I so agree with you .. switching back and forth throughout the day is a bit much.

    I also like 28/50 combo. I use xpro3+18/35. If I want to carry two cameras, I bring GR3 and Xpro3+35. Using conversion lens on x100 defeats its purpose and the screw on/off looks troublesome than quick release with a push button/twist.

    For me, both conversion lenses are probably too much in terms of keeping a nice compact kit, but I do like the WCL to add a bit of versatility that you can't get by cropping. But for a bit of travel these add enough versatility that you could take this on a trip and feel like you have decent coverage without having to take a whole backpack full of lenses too. I never bothered with them in the past but the larger sensor and ibis might make it worth it and counter the added weight.

    • @movetomirrorless

    Great review of the lenses. But here is the thing. What you also get with those lenses is the leaf shutter. And this is a big deal. Flash sync is a non issue. On a bright day, use that built in nd and with flash sync, you can get great outdoor portraits.

      Man I forgot about that. In the past I did the same thing with my Sony RX1. Because that camera had a leaf shutter as well, I was able to shoot portraits wide open at f/2 with the maximum shutter speed as 1/2000 of a second. Thanks for bringing this up. I’ll need to try that technique out with the x100vi.

    • @movetomirrorless
      @movetomirrorless  11 місяців тому +1

      yep..l after walking around shooting for an hour, I got to same conclusion as you. I'm either just gonna use 2 cameras with the 2 focal lengths I want (when the situation calls for it -- most likely for events/weddings). Or stick to one focal length that best suits the subject of the day. but I found that most of my selects and favorite images were used with the stock 35mm equiv. lens.

    • @ramblingcameraman990
      @ramblingcameraman990 11 місяців тому

      I don’t understand why everyone says this. They literally take basically the same amount of time as switching a lens on an ILC camera. I mean sure, you don’t want to be switching it in and out every few shots, but who does that with an ILC either?

    • @palinode
      @palinode 11 місяців тому

      @@ramblingcameraman990Part of the issue for me is that I own the first versions of the conversion lenses, which means that I have to go into the menu and tell the camera what's mounted on it. But even if I had the updated models, it's still not as smooth and practiced as the quick rotation and snapping in of an interchangeable lens. I shoot almost entirely with primes and I'm very used to changing lenses on the fly. Anyway, I'm happy to hear that you don't have a problem with the converters.

    • @ramblingcameraman990
      @ramblingcameraman990 11 місяців тому

      @@palinode ahhh, yeah first version would be annoying for sure and definitely adds to the hassle. Do you at least have it setup on a custom function button? Like I said, I’m just truly confused as every UA-cam video I watched talking about the conversion lenses they say something like “it’s a hassle to switch it out so I just leave it on for the day”. Unless you’re swapping filters from one to the other or something (which also takes time on regular lenses), it literally takes like 2-3 seconds, so all the comments confuse the hell out of me.

    • @palinode
      @palinode 11 місяців тому +1

      @@ramblingcameraman990 I could map the conversion lens to a function button, but I've got my camera set up pretty specifically. If I used the lenses more frequently I'd most likely do that, but right now I've got everything mapped out into an ideal configuration for me. But as I said, it's not really about the time it takes - it's about how the photographer experiences it. When I swap interchangeable lenses, I don't have to think about it beyond which lens I want. The conversion lenses interrupt my flow, if that makes sense - I have to stop, look at the threads, make sure they're aligned properly, screw it in. Obviously this works really well for you, but I think your experience is the exception. You're just built different!

The TCL is far too large for the small body, so just use the built-in digital zoom on the 40MP sensor (yes I know you will loose some pixels). Rather reminds me of an old Pentax SP1000 where we had to screw lenses in. Think I only used a 50mm and 135mm. It was all very simple then in the 1970s. We just concentrated on the images we were after rather than the tech. Even the lovely VI is rammed full of tech. Does it help or hinder us. Unless you absolutely need the ND filter and leaf shutter the X100v come standard, Then i believe the conversion lenses defeat the purpose of this X100 design, you may as well get an XE4 with the 18, 23 & 35 f2 mini prime lenses and that opens up a lot more options such as the tiny 16mm f2.8 and the awesome 50mm f2.

      I see what you're saying... I have to think out loud on this because I am not 100% familiar with fuji's whole line up yet... is the XE series still in production? I thought they phased that out. what I was thinking is the closest choice is the X-S20 + 23mm f/2, but that would run you almost $1800, which would be $300 over the x100vi, and you would only have a 26mp sensor. The other option I think is the XT-5, which gives you similar IBIS and megapixel count, but if you add the 23mm lens, that totals up to over $2200. either way, the XS20 and XT5 gives you more flexibility with interchangeable lenses. But what the x100 gives you is the smaller footprint... am I seeing this correctly?

      Xe4 has no weather sealing, no built in ND, no built in flash, no 10 bit internal, no 4k60, 26mp so you can’t crop and keep high quality if you’re rolling with a pancake, no ovf, etc. There is literally no other camera that offers what the x100vi does, especially in such a small package.

      good points... if you look at all of that, then the x100vi is a bargain.@@ramblingcameraman990

      @@ramblingcameraman990 for most people those are not a huge lose, especially the leaf shutter, who in the right mind would buy a X100v for flash photographer? Which is really the only benefit the leaf shutter gives, and putting a flash would be so top heavy. Ultimately the image quality coming off the XeV and prime lenses should be in the for front of your priorities, the conversion adapters compromise image quality as we all know. I agree the ND filter would be handy for water/ landscapes slow shutter but there is no perfect camera. and cameras such as the XT4/ XT5 or Xe4 provide much better value than a fashion statement.

      @@eliaspap8708 I think you clearly misunderstand the X100VI. That’s ok, a million pre orders tells you what you need to know. And no, the conversion lenses don’t compromise quality.
