Quick tip that helps a lot in this game and irl too. Study the shit out of techniques for the weapon you want to use most. It may seem boring at first but believe me it makes it so much more fun and actually improves your skill. Plus, NEVER hold a two-handed weapon with your hands touching. For axes, place one hand just under the axe head and one near the bottom of the handle. For swords, one hand as close to the guard as possible and the other as close to the pommel (or even straight up gripping the pommel) as possible. A hand closer to the blade on the handle adds a lot more precision and control, and a hand closer to the shaft adds a lot more leverage and therfore force.
For spears I didn't research so much as I found longswords more fun. What I know is that you still shouldn't hold onto them with two hands touching. I like to have one hand one near the middle for less control but more range, and the other near the end of the spears shaft for leverage and power. Remember that spears aren't ONLY stabbing weapons, you can slash with them quite well. Just imagine you're using a sword with a super long handle.

There’s an oar on the beach at the outpost. I use it as a weapon and you can put it on your back and on the weapon shelf thing in the house
the oar sucks as a weapon though, i've used it and it takes ages to kill anyone with it

you can also do it with the book you use to spawn weapons, just scroll down and there's the armor options, and the option to equip them

I put on invincibility so I have never had that problem
