    In the late '70 was driving a TranstarII and was 100mi east of Indy. Freezing rain was falling and the road so icy I could turn the wheel and the difference in elevation on the two lanes (concrete) like maybe 1/4 inch kept me going straight ahead. Changing lanes was sketchy. Saw a motel at the next exit and just that little slope on the exit ramp put me in the ditch for the night. Next morning there was a fleet of tow trucks just cruising up and down the hiway. I flagged one down and he setup to pull me out and as the line tightened, one of his wheel chock popped out and shot about 100ft down the road.

    I picked up a new 5th Wheel RV about 15 years ago. The weather forecast did not mention any snow. I drove Hwy #1 through the mountains from Kelowna to Calgary. The road was snow covered most of the way. I told my friend that I likely would never drive such terrible roads again. Just east of Banff, the left lane was not even being used. We stayed in line and we were pleased to get home to Calgary in fairly good time considering the conditions. I can only imagine when you are driving your rig in freezing rain. Take care.

      The winter roads just opened last week, a month late, because it was so warm.
      Last week, down South in Winnipeg, I had a Super B-Train crack the whip, on the ice, just ahead of us. I bet the driver was getting a bit nervous.😅
      Best wishes from the far North.

    As someone who lives in North Alabama close to I-65, I can state that the Southeast states have very little in the way of snow clearing equipment. We rarely get snow and usually it is only a couple of inches, no where close to what the Northern parts of the country receive. The snow rarely stays more than a couple of days so the states allow nature to do all the heavy lifting. I do believe the states should have sufficient equipment to keep the interstate highways open.

    • @nspro931
      @nspro931 11 місяців тому +1

      Here in the west motor graders do the heavy plowing. Plow trucks are just for lightweight stuff. I should think in the South they might be able to call up enough motor graders to keep things moving for the rare times it does snow.

      I remember after the Blizzard of 1993, City of Birmingham purchased a whole fleet of surplus Army Humvees for use in snow/ice. They never had a reason to use them & eventually sold them as scrap years later.

    • @jamessimms415
      @jamessimms415 11 місяців тому +2

      @@nspro931that fine & wonderful, but as said above; it doesn’t snow or ice up enough to justify purchasing a whole fleet to sit around eleven & a half months out of the year.

    • @nspro931
      @nspro931 11 місяців тому +2

      @@jamessimms415 I was talking about motor graders, they are used to grade county roads and on construction projects all over the world and all year round. The problem would be the logistics of rounding up operators with contracts and keeping them fueled and operators rested but the iron should be available.

    • @spencers4121
      @spencers4121 11 місяців тому

      @@nspro931 It's far cheaper and safer to just close down, I too live in north Alabama. The weather we just had is honestly a once in a 10-15 year thing, outside of that you might get a 1-2 day close down or delay. It just doesn't make sense to invest in trucks / plows / stock piles of sand and salt. Remember too that people up north will often have snow tires, and or years of driving on snow and ice. People here don't even know how to drive on wet streets, nor have snow blowers and equipment to even clear out the driveway / parking lot to even leave and get on a cleared street. Most people don't even own the clothing for the extreme cold we had, this is an area that rarely sees freezing temps. And only often at night for a handful of days out of the year.
      Just for some contrast the freezing weather broke on Monday here, granted we did creep over freezing on some days. And for the most part the roads were basically clear on Saturday.
      But here it's Thursday And we will almost hit 70 degrees, if not for the rain and overcast would almost need the AC. Literally a 60 degree temp swing in less then a week.

    We went to my aunts house in Mississippi for Christmas one year. We left home in northeast Oklahoma, and it wasn't doing anything we got over in Missouri, and it started snowing. Daddy said it is probably snowing at home now to so we will keep going it will probably quit before long. It doesn't. we were in snow all the way to Tupelo, Mississippi. My aunt lived outside Tupelo a few miles. We got there, and Daddy called someone at home, and it hadn't even done anything at home.
    Stay safe, and God bless.

    Dan Dan the professional flat deck man. Running ice roads and running on a roads that are frozen up from rain and freezing rain are two different animals. I have done both. I think , no I know, what Dan was on was more slippery. I have skied many of the time in a tractor trailer. It’s a little scarey at first but if you have controlled your speed like Dan did it’s doable. I used to as Dan mentioned keep an eye out for the spay coming off the tires. Plus I always when running in weather that was freezing up the hiway I would do break check. It’s not that you can not run on frozen roads it’s the speed you do it at. In Canada in the winter I would run for hundreds of miles on frozen roads from freezing rain. By staying out there in really bad weather I got to hown my driving skills. Ya never learn nothing in a pickle park. But if you could handle the slippery conditions keep those wheels a turning. Thanks for posting Dan. Brought back some fond memories. Have a great and a safe day. Happy trails to you. D
