- Scratches is not a film about ending a race, as much as it is about the start of it all-the origin of cycling adventures for someone like Manu. This journey, in many ways, parallels the experiences of numerous individuals. Why do we need this kind of riding? Why do we crave this adventure?
Rather than providing a generic answer, the film delves into Manu’s relationship with cycling as a tool for freedom, exploration, meditation, and perhaps even therapy in some ways. The film unfolds in the Kirghiz mountains during the Silk Road Mountain Race in 2023, where Manu crashed and had to scratch. It then retraces its steps back in time and travels to other lands.
Initially, the film was intended to be a video race recap, but it evolved into a love letter to freedom and movement. Eventually, it underwent another transformation, and Scratches is the result of a constantly evolving process in that regard.

This is an important film. Ryan, I feel you finally got the material you needed to give the true measure of your talent. You came up with a film that is deeply personal yet accessible. And, as always, without compromise.
Manu, you found the right person to tell your story in Ryan. And it's so important that you did. I feel like this film is a perfect match between a story and a storyteller.

Sofiane, I couldn't describe it any better. I knew Ryan was going to be the best match possible out there from the very beginning but I can only be so lucky that it just worked out between us the way it did, I mean what are the chances I would tell something like this to someone I never even met before in real life ( we did have about a 1000hrs of videocalls and sent a zillion messages 😅) but yeah Ryan has this gift of being a great listener and the insight of putting this massive puzzle together. So greatfull for your words 🙏
Manu, you are tremendously inspiring. The film is a gorgeous work of art & storytelling. As painful as parts were, it filled me with an overwhelming sense of positivity. And thank to Tailfin for supporting this level of content.

A story beautifully told. Someone once said to me whenever I see somebody running or riding a long way I always wonder what they are escaping from...I saw a ten year old on a horse riding beside a 10 year old on a MTB enjoying life as kids should. It's like doing a long marathon every day. It will be fun! But always remember that you ride in remote areas. You can't make any risky decisions. Just one little mistake can lead to a fatal error.
Hey man, my two cents, as I did a few, slow is fast but immobile is very very slow, go slow, don’t stop, eat, sleep and drink. You will be fine!

Wow! Sounds great Mahesh, I do quite s bit of touring myself, my main advice would be : take it easy, don’t ride too long too soon, stay hydrated and everything will be fine! Like Manu says in the film, you will be amazed how good people are when you are on the road and they will often sort you out when you need! Have a blast!
Hi Mahesh, sounds like you are going to have some fun this year. There's a lot of advice to give but in the end everyone is different, other goals, other needs, so my advice is to just head out with some descend equipment (that does a lot) and other than that it's just you, the road and a whole bunch of great people you will meet along the way. You made the most important decision already...And that's starting this journey, the rest will follow ✊

Hmmm, ich weiß nicht so recht, was ich mit diesem Film anfangen soll…? 🤔 Abgesehen davon, dass ich mir nicht konkret vorstellen kann, was mit „physical abuse“ gemeint ist (und von wem), bekomme ich auch die Zusammenhänge zu diesem Rennen und dem erlittenen Sturz nicht logisch entschlüsselt. Hier spricht sich jemand etwas von der Seele, ok, aber warum muss das in die Welt und viel wichtiger, was will es mir, dem Zuseher sagen? Reine Selbsttherapie wird es ja wohl nicht sein. Ja, dieser Film ist anders als viele aus dem Mikrokosmos der Gravel-Race-Szene, aber reicht das schon, um auch interessant und nachhal(l)tend zu sein?
