Have you seen Treasure Planet (2002)? A great sci-fi adaptation of the classic featuring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Hyde Pierce, Emma Thompson, Martin Short, Laurie Metcalf, and a galley full of excellent character voices. The score by James Newton Howard is one of my all-time favorites.
Muppet Treasure Island is ridiculously, unbelievably good. I saw Tim Curry do a Q&A at a convention a few years ago, and I was surprised by how many people had questions for him about his performance in that movie. And holy shit -- the scene at the end where Jim lets him get away on the boat is, I'm seriously not kidding here, some of the best acting I've seen in my entire life.
I have a similar theatre story: The first play I was ever in was Royal Hunt for the Sun. The production starred Ira David Wood (Evan Rachel Wood's father). Since the play and script were both British, 'jailer' was spelled 'gaoler' -- and therefore David was pronouncing it with a hard 'g.' I was unaware of the theatre etiquette which forbade actors giving notes to each other, so I kept suggesting that someone should let him know it's pronounced 'jailer.' Nobody was willing to say anything, however, so finally I mentioned it to him myself. There was such a tremendous relief which overcame him at finally being able to understand the line. 'Oh! A jailer!' he exclaimed. Many times after he loved sharing that story with others. Anyway, the Glengarry Glen Ross story reminded me. I feel like I totally understand the feeling.
The Superman idea is hilariously great and it honestly makes sense when thinking about Superman in DC. Even though he may be the Last Son of Krypton there are several more people who survived Krypton’s destruction such as Superwoman and the Bottled City of Kandor. So it makes sense.
Personally my favourite movie version of this story is the made for TV version. With Charlton Heston as Long John Silver and a young Christian Bale as Jim Hawkins. Though gotta admit Muppet Treasure Island is an awesome movie. It's kind of a life-long goal of mine to play the part of Long John Silver.
I'm so glad Matt likes Muppets Treasure Island and Muppets Christmas Carol! But as for Seen It: I'm assuming you haven't seen Treasure Planet? It destroyed Disney's classically animated division, but I think it's really good! Gorgeous art, cool space version of pirates, awesome Long John Silver performance and Jim relationship. It's great! At least, until Martin Short shows up... 😕
Thanks for the mansplain, but when someone says that a film wasn't good for a company, it's implied that the failure was in box office returns, not in film quality. Treasure Planet didn't gain back the money that was put into it, which was a final nail in the coffin for Disney's 2D animation for almost a decade after that (Princess and the Frog also didn't do as well as folks hoped). So the film indeed "killed" that section of production for the company.
It's always fun to see Nigel Bruce in a film. He was so wonderful as the bumbling oaf in the Sherlock Holmes films with the great Basil Rathbone. Bruce was excellent in Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca and Suspicion too!
Having brought it up twice in one episode, you've inspired me to make a game: Modern movies if they were under the restrictions of the Hays Code. First one to come to mind was that Ebbing, Missouri becomes a ghost town *overnight*. And a judge probably gives some big monologue about revenge before bringing down the gavel, like in The Bigamist.
Yes! I love the eyepatch theory at the end. A friend of mine claimed they switched eyes for day/night, which makes no logical sense to me, but I can see how it stemmed from the below deck theory.
I've always heard that the eye patch was so that pirates could still aim at night to shoot if they switched eyes. The below deck theory sounds plausible though.
So for funsies, I Googled it, and if Treasure Island does take place in the 1750's, 4 pennies is about a dollar and 50 cents when adjusted for inflation. So Matt's assessment of that payment was very spot on, even by today's standards.
One problem....there is no such thing as a silver 4 - penny bit. Back then there were silver sixpences and copper three pence coins, but no 4 penny bits.
Oh geez, I was totally thinking you were about to watch Captains Courageous the entire cold opening. Saw them in theater class the same year so I guess that’s why I connect the two.
Re the eyepatch statement right at the end, you can get the same effect by keeping one eye closed or covering it with your hand. Great for if you're about to go into the light after being somewhere dark but you want to still keep one eye adjusted to darkness. So yeah I'd buy that being a reason for eyepatches
Hello, Craig and Matt! I love what you guys are doing! Keep up the great work! I have been loving this show since the "Tough Guys Don't Dance" episode. You guys are the new generation's Siskel and Ebert and I don't take that lightly. For a future Seen It, have you seen the 2002 film "Secretary"? I know the subject matter of this movie may be eyebrow raising, but it's a great portrayal of D/S relationships and the leads give impressive performances, especially Maggie Gyllenhaal. If you haven't seen this film, boy, is it much better than the "Fifty Shades of Grey" shlock. I saw it in the theaters back in '02 and I remember getting teary eyed with joy and not sleeping that day. 17 years later, my wife and I still love it as always.
Seen It? "They Drive By Night" A rare early supporting role for Bogart, The skipper's dad: Alan Hale Sr and one of the all time great "goes crazy" scenes by Ida Lupino.
Muppets Treasure Island was one of the reasons I became a sailor for a couple of years (the others being the mathwork and cheap beer) Unfortunately, it was nowhere near as fun without the Muppets and internet.
Have you seen The Hitch-Hiker (1953)? It’s directed by Ida Lupino and was released in the same year as another film of hers, one that’s been on your show, The Bigamist. It’s a fantastic film-noir thriller. If you haven’t, check it out!
Knowing Matt loves music biopics, and Craig is coming around on Ethan Hawke have you guys seen Blaze from last year. Though Hawke just directs, and does quite a good job my I add it is a profoundly sad yet beautiful film about man not many know, but is acted wonderfully by an unknown Ben Dickey I highly suggest you guys watch it if you haven’t. Not necessarily for the show, but at least to be talked about on scene it.
I have a dumb question, but in the opening to season one, you had movies Carrie and Christine in the movies you hadn’t seen. Will you ever watch them sir? Maybe this October? If I could magically see you watch any movie, it would be Lifeboat, but I’m sure you’ve both seen it.
I've always wondered if the Unboxing videos have fewer views because of the name. Unboxing videos on YT are sort of a genre, usually related to video game consoles. WTTB Unboxing is so much more than opening boxes. It's literally more of the show with, I would say, the movie/banter ratio being flipped. Everyone here should watch it.
Could you guys do an episode on Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings? I actually like it more than the Jackson movies in a lot of ways, and thought it captured the whimsical spirit of the books much better.
The Hays Code was the motion picture industry's attempt at policing the content of movies. It has rules like a if you show a crime/"sin" you must show it being punished later, a women must have at least one foot in the floor in any romantic scene, and priests can't be villains, and more. You can read about it here: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_Picture_Production_Code
speaking of me and my arrow...seen it: The Point. the whole production is exactly my mom's aesthetics, so it was a nice piece of my...pointless...childhood.

Treasure Planet is Disney's hidden masterpiece. It's so underrated.
Yup, favorite disney movie of all time!
I hope they see it.
omg i can’t unsee the amy schumer comparison lol

This is officially my new favourite episode. I keep coming back to it all the time.
I'm watching this again for probably the 10th time lol. Such a classic episode!
I surprised Matt talking about "message boards" didn't cause him to instantly crumble to dust.
Ha ha. Yeah, I should have said "BBSs"
The Superman idea is hilariously great and it honestly makes sense when thinking about Superman in DC. Even though he may be the Last Son of Krypton there are several more people who survived Krypton’s destruction such as Superwoman and the Bottled City of Kandor. So it makes sense.
You say Jackie Cooper was too much of a little rascal...He was actually in the Little Rascals!
That "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots" shirt will not go unappreciated! Great album
When I was a kid I loved the Norwegian film "Shipwrecked." One of my favorite pirate movies.
Bear Eggers I thought we was mates. I thought we was...friends
I'm so happy matt agrees with my feelings about those muppet movies
I was literally about to write about how "Muppet treasure island was fantastic" and then Matt beat me to it...
CrazyKungfuGirl it’s almost like that and Christmas Carol are the best muppet movies
I'm so glad Matt likes Muppets Treasure Island and Muppets Christmas Carol! But as for Seen It:
I'm assuming you haven't seen Treasure Planet? It destroyed Disney's classically animated division, but I think it's really good! Gorgeous art, cool space version of pirates, awesome Long John Silver performance and Jim relationship. It's great! At least, until Martin Short shows up... 😕
The film did not destroy the 2D department. The box office did.
Thanks for the mansplain, but when someone says that a film wasn't good for a company, it's implied that the failure was in box office returns, not in film quality. I’d watch a live action remake of treasure planet. Take a chance Disney, stop remaking the movies that worked the first time.
Barton Fink was an insane film I came away completely in the dark but I knew somehow it was one of the greatest films ive ever seen.
Highlight of my week! Love you guys!!
What a happy coincidence! I'll be taking a tour of the tall ship Lady Washington so an episode on Treasure island is appropriate.
Love Soul Coughing references... I know you're smart as paint!🎶
Unboxing is the best!!
Treasure Planet was my favorite version of the story.
Same! The art, the space adaptations, and Cyborg Long John Silver is so cool!
It's always fun to see Nigel Bruce in a film. He was so wonderful as the bumbling oaf in the Sherlock Holmes films with the great Basil Rathbone. Bruce was excellent in Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca and Suspicion too!
Have you seen Watership Down from 1978 it's my favorite movie and I'd love to hear you guys talk about it
Having brought it up twice in one episode, you've inspired me to make a game: Modern movies if they were under the restrictions of the Hays Code.
First one to come to mind was that Ebbing, Missouri becomes a ghost town *overnight*. And a judge probably gives some big monologue about revenge before bringing down the gavel, like in The Bigamist.
This episode had a great energy to it.

@@VinnyDaQ I don't need your logic and facts here. I said funsies, dammit! Funsies!
@@VinnyDaQ But seriously, thank you. That is quite interesting.
I hope you finally talk about hereditary in October. I could listen to you guys talk about movies for eternity.
Jackie Cooper was a perfect Perry White in Superman.
Oh geez, I was totally thinking you were about to watch Captains Courageous the entire cold opening. Saw them in theater class the same year so I guess that’s why I connect the two.
This was a very punny..er funny episode. (the main reason that I like Welcome to the basement)
Kind of Craig to say that he gets self-conscious instead of saying that Matt is occasionally annoying him.
Re the eyepatch statement right at the end, you can get the same effect by keeping one eye closed or covering it with your hand. Great for if you're about to go into the light after being somewhere dark but you want to still keep one eye adjusted to darkness. So yeah I'd buy that being a reason for eyepatches

0:36 Hmmm.... if Tona's on cam duty, who's hand is that in the back?
like hitchcock like tona.. gotta have their cameos...
@@kilte90 Yes... this being her most confounding one yet.
Man, this just makes me miss Black sails.
hey Craig , I didn't know you were at war with the mystics...
That's an ace Gang of Four album
Muppets Treasure Island was one of the reasons I became a sailor for a couple of years (the others being the mathwork and cheap beer) Unfortunately, it was nowhere near as fun without the Muppets and internet.
I haven't seen this version, but from what you've shown it looks like a more faithful adaptation than the Disney version.
Despair Island yesterday. Treasure Island today.
Do yous guys do outdoor Wisconsiny things like camping and the such?
I’m on chapter 13 of the book! I need to finish it before I watch this episode! I’ll leave a like anyway.
Since we're talking about Treasure Planet, how about a Seen It for Treasure Planet, one of the great underrated Disney films.
Have you seen The Hitch-Hiker (1953)? It’s directed by Ida Lupino and was released in the same year as another film of hers, one that’s been on your show, The Bigamist. It’s a fantastic film-noir thriller. If you haven’t, check it out!
You look good in an eyepatch, Craig. Very Hathaway Man.
Yes, Muppet T.I. is excellent!
Craig is especially silly this episode, and I for one approve.
Nigel Bruce was a gem
Matt Sloan for Best of the Worst guest?
Looks like Nigel Bruce is well on his way to getting into the WTTB HOF!
I'm from Chicago where they put "the" in front of things. Like the soldier's field.
And the original book was written by Robert Louis Stevenson, who also created Jekyll and Hyde...
The Swimmer (1968), I thinks is a great movie with a weird premise but a great execution. Burt Lancaster is great in that film. Have you seen it?
Knowing Matt loves music biopics, and Craig is coming around on Ethan Hawke have you guys seen Blaze from last year. Will Fetch 'Em Down, John Silver be available on Bandcamp soon?
I have a dumb question, but in the opening to season one, you had movies Carrie and Christine in the movies you hadn’t seen. Will you ever watch them sir? Maybe this October?
If I could magically see you watch any movie, it would be Lifeboat, but I’m sure you’ve both seen it.
muppet treasure island is still my favorite ^-^
The Pelican in Barton Fink was a complete accident! It is an amazing story
You gotta check out Treasure Planet
I was fully prepared for this to be the Disney version...I think I still prefer the Disney version after seeing this, lol.
Do you all see the hand in the background 0:37
My D&D character is Matt Sloan, he's a chaotic neutral film producer...
I've always wondered if the Unboxing videos have fewer views because of the name. Unboxing videos on YT are sort of a genre, usually related to video game consoles. I watch it, but yeah, would def call it something else.
there's another version of treasure island from Russia that's animated (for the most part). It's quite beautiful and I'd like know your opinions on it
Next thing we knew, Matt's idea for "the Superman" got exploited for 2022's The Batman.
I’m just commenting because I’m excited mine was the 420th like on this video
I've heard Craig's eye-patch theory too. Sounds legit... yarrr
The eyepatch trick works beautifully. You don't have to put the patch to the other eye, just flip it up.
missed opportunity: "enters black dog, enters black cat..." see, easy...
The Square, seen it?
Man, I'd really like to know Matt and Craig's thoughts on Treasure Planet.
I didn't know Michael Cera starred in Treasure Island
Guybrush Threepwood might pirate...courtesy of Lucas Arts(sniff sniff)
Kitty! @5:13
Jackie Cooper was adorable, Matt.
The eyepatch thing got tested on Mythbusters and got confirmed I think.
Could you guys do an episode on Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings? I actually like it more than the Jackson movies in a lot of ways, and thought it captured the whimsical spirit of the books much better.
What about Treasure Island 1990?
The haze code? What is that?? :)
The Hays Code was the motion picture industry's attempt at policing the content of movies. About the Eye Patch... to see in the dark better. Mythbusters found it Plausable.
Was that a pirated copy of the movie?
His name is Mr. Hands because he's named after the actual pirate Israel Hands.
Gentlemen: have you seen LETHAL WEAPON?
I think the little kid is trying to channel Shirley Temple with the faces and voice but much less cute.
That kid looked like Shirley Temple.
This is why you need to put release dates in your titles.
Would you be a anarchist Pirate working against the world or would you be a sanctioned Privateer profiting off of war?
WHAT?, No Long John Silver joke? Something fishy.
Craig, lend Matt your comb.
Wow...Kid Trump is in this movie!
speaking of me and my arrow...seen it: The Point.
the whole production is exactly my mom's aesthetics, so it was a nice piece of my...pointless...childhood.
Woo 400th like!
It's not "The Batman." It's just "Batman" dammit.
That was awful 8:45 :)
I like the muppets version better
I hate Glengerry Glenross. Ed Harris should have got up and beat the snot out of Alec Baldwin for throwing a coffee at him.
I think Jackie Cooper was cute.
Like jack black if he wasn't likeable
So Jack Black?
Lol oh my gosh
more chad vader please.
Yo, at 10:04 it really sounds like he's saying "You're as smart as paint, Vagina Dick." What did he actually say?
"Yer as smart as paint fer gynin (joining), Dick." (You are smart for joining us, man named Dick)
