I'm 62. A working class man. Attended a Grammar school till the age of 16 and had no further education since,. I point this out simply as an act of intellectual honesty. Oborne is a natural conservative, he admits this, but his reports are illuminating and honest. He's a Conservative John Pilger, in my book. He doesn't shirk from the truth and certainly doesn't get enough credit. He works outside of the spin, lobby, political greasy pole climbers types and we need more like him. I have always been a Labour moderate but find that, like so many others, in all party's, our political and economic system is captured by the few to the detriment of nearly everyone else including large sections of the middle class. O'borne realises this as does the likes of Owen Jones and others. Our politicians put party before the voters and the two main party's are no longer broad churches with both becoming more right wing than in any time in modern U.K. political history. Both fail to tackle an economic system not fit for purpose. Prefering to tinker around the edges. I think Owen Jones has it right. An incoming Labour party will do nothing of merit and in future we will see the far right gain power here. Liberal politics is failing and it is failing because our politicians are largely self serving or moronic.

@@keithparker1346 Me too. In case anyone is not aware: traditional socialists like Corbyn or Tony Benn are 'libertarian' socialists. This means they tend to support the individual in relations with the state, supporting human rights, individual liberty, free speech, freedom of assembly, religion, etc. Internationally, the libertarian part means supporting international law and the rights of individual states over the brutality of 'might makes right' colonialism, imperialism and war.
As a traditional libertarian socialist today, I find myself often allied not only with Peter Oborne (libertarian conservative), but American libertarians (libertarian libertarians) like Ron Paul, or Judge Napolitano regarding the imperial wars in Ukraine and Taiwan and the genocide in Palestine. I find the alliance very humanizing and calming. We just don't talk about economics (we're total opposites)
I am 72 and agree with you almost completely, I too also largely agree with Owen Jones and Novara Media etc. in their observations and analysis. Your points are well-written and succinct. You might be interested in Turchin's book 'End Times', at least their is a touch of hope in there, I feel we need it at the moment!

Around 5% of the population of Britain can be classified as millionaires - and if one rounds up to say that the "rich" represents 10 % of the population... when will one have policy that looks out for the 90% of the population...
This came up yesterday so the figures are fresh. Someone making £82k per year is in the top 5%. I absolutely agree with you, but think you should amend your numbers to be more like the findings of the Occupy Movement: 99.99% vs 0.01%. Because even the 1% has a 1%
The number of people who this country is actually run for would fit into one of the premier league stadiums. It’s much fewer than 5% and they individually have much more than a million.

I think Gove is more dangerous than a lot of similar politicians on the right as he comes across as pretty affable and pleasant when talking to people, which can be pretty disarming.

Gove, by his own criteria of extremism, should be denied all government funding. His presence in the current government is a mark of its moral and intellectual bankruptcy. The sooner it is voted out of power the better. Would that Starmer was not the main alternative.

A phenomenal insight that supports two of my opinions. 1) This level of control (by the powerful) is enabled and supported through our elective dictatorship. We need real democracy.
2) We are simply not allowed transformative government: Corbyn could not be allowed anywhere near power and we are allowed nothing more than Starmer.

A political system like the one Peter Oborne described in the beginning sounds very much like a system that Steven Levitsky would class as “Competitive Authoritarianism” instead of “Democracy”.
The words Gove and weasel go together extremely well. I mean he is the type of character that if I was to see him in an episode of Yes Minister which is of course is never going to happen but if he did I would not blink an eye. He has the type of character that if there is a calamity being discussed amongst the chattering journalists in the media. You know there will be someone saying go and get Gove to deal with it go and send him out. Knowing that he will deflect, evade, blur, dissipate, confuse, distance any attempt at any sort of answer knowing the press wont touch him.
Oborne is still a Tory but he is an honest broker and an honorable decent man. Great journalist and truly refreshing for a right wing journalist.

I looked on line. These comments are widely reported. It might be the nature of Oxbridge debating, but also reported were non debating comments made in 1993 about Lucy Fraser. I was a very newly qualified barrister in 1993 and those comments were utterly unacceptable even in 1993. Even amongst the rugger buggers and posh boys of the bar, which was dominated by Oxbridge and public school hoorays.

Oborne’s a journalist truly deserving of the title: Independent, evidenced, and above all, truthful. Wherever you are on the political spectrum, provided you’re honest, worthwhile and democratic debate can occur. Unfortunately, we are overwhelmed with the disingenuous who, as Spartacus brilliantly articulates in the comments below, are beholden to the narrow interests of the elite.
We had taken from us, by the distorting mainstream media, the prospect of the chance of meaningful change with Jeremy Corbyn. Although his programme would likely have been constrained by COVID, he’d have handled the crisis compassionately and honestly. The enragingly naked corruption and heartlessness we suffered from our pillaging government simply wouldn’t have occurred.

Gove, who was Education Secretary in 2010, made life absolutely so unbearable for school and F.E. teaching staff, that I actually gave up the profession in 2013. He's a vile, snivelling, grifter, who destroyed the state education system and staff morale.
