Love your videos, Capitain Bob! Thank you for taking the time. We sail a 1967 Bristol Corinthian 19 and just got a Cape Dory 25. Waiting for better winds in August to launch it (we are in the Chilean central coast). So far this winter has been pretty nasty.
Hope you are using the hitch often as yew sail the Ocean. Don't forget to secure the clove hitch with a half hitch. Make sure your fenders don"t go adrift.
Hello Captain Bob, this and all your other videos are easy to follow along and I can do the knots. Thank you, so far I feel comfortable with the square knot, sheet bend, clove hitch and figure eight. Can you please recommend what other knots I should try?
Thanks for the video. Why would I not just use two half hitches? I have heard the advantage of the clove hitch, for fenders at least, is the ease of adjusting the height of the fender. With the half hitch added, you seem to lose that advantage.
Would this be useful to temporarily hold dock lines from a 50' yacht to the dock before the final tying location is set? I am often the one jumping to the dock and grabbing lines/pulling the boat closer in before my FIL or hubby jumps down and puts the ropes in their final secure location and ties them off. I usually just throw the lines under the bull rail (very large bull rails here in Alaska) and hope the boat holds its position while I grab other lines or wait for one of the guys to tie them off. Thanks much😁!
No lie, I tied a clove hitch to a limb the other day. Then thought that the rocking of the boat may loosen the knot so I backed it up with a half hitch... Hard to re-event something that's already known doh.
No waffle. No begging to subscribe. No watch to the end pleading. This is the best clip on youtube
The ONLY REAL HALF HITCH KNOT TUTORIAL ON UA-cam. 💯👌
Well it's not just a half hitch, it's a clove hitch, with a half hitch at the end
Beautiful. Thanks, and I liked how you’re actually outside with your boat too.
ty. Never trusted the clove hitch, but now I can.
Perfect demonstration! Clove with a half hitch!
Good job old timer. I'd love to talk to you about life back then. Yours seems very interesting.
Clearest example I have seen. Thank you!

thanks sooooo much great captain Bob ... helpful & simple
A half hitch to the rail also works to back up a clove hitchg
Thank you Captain Bob!
Would this be able to support 200 pounds?
Thanks! Very helpful
U the man bob
Thank you for sharing
Can also tie the half hitch around the rail too
Thank you. Good job on the video!
thanks captain Bob!
So the half hitch makes the clove hitch more secure?
Yes it takes extra strain off the clove hitch
Perfect 😍
needed for Boy Scouts Thanks a lot!!!
Same here... Thanks, Captain Bob!
1:10 Improved version
If you pull one half hitch through the other before you tighten the knot you will not need to add your half hitch.
Clove hitch with a safety knot is what it's called in the fire department. Safety knots are used on everything
Nice.
Cheers Bob :)
That's my pa:)
Should have shown it from the other side i.e. from the side where you would be standing when you use the knot
