  • I'm Scott Galaxy and today I've got another fun unrealesed game to show you. It's GOLDEN AXE for the SEGA 32X! I'll also do a SIDE-BY-SIDE comparison with the original Genesis release (from the SEGA CLASSICS game on SEGA CD). Is it that much better? Is it worth the $50-$60 price tag? Let's take a look!

    It does look much better than the cd version, but it feels like it’s a mod that use arcade backgrounds and genesis/Megadrive sprites.
    Having the sprites to keep the arcade palettes colors should be priority.

    I shelled out $229 for the Sega CD addon and never saw the 12-13 games with actual 3D superscalar making use of the ASIC DSP. I never knew that SoJ had withheld documentation and had so few development tools for their machines. There wasn't really a need for the 32X when the criminally underused Sega CD could do as well or sometimes better (60fps instead of 30fps).
    Thanks for this great video, though. It brings back some great memories of one of the best console games ever.

      The 32X added 32,768 on-screen colours to games. Whereas the Mega-CD was still limited to the Mega Drive's colour pallette.

    • @MaxAbramson3
      @MaxAbramson3 2 місяці тому

      @@ulysses2162 While that's true on paper, the reality is that the Genesis/MD can draw 320x448i as with Sonic 2 and a few others. It can also use S/H Mode for 3,375 colors and can draw 256 onscreen ay one time. So the increase in colors want really necessary with the 550MB CD format. The Sega CD's arcade quality scaling, rotation, and 4,000 textured, shaded quads per second made the 32X unnecessary... and for many games, the Saturn.

    The issue with the Sega CD and the 32X is that they were separated adapters. They should have made 1 single adapter called the Sega 32x CD and then merge it quickly into one console with 6 button joysticks. It also came too late on the market. If Sega had released it in 1992 as a single unit, with many arcade hits and games from Capcom, Konami etc, it would have been a monster hit

    Both versions were a waste of hardware, specially the Mega-CD (btw, is an official release and deserves more criticism) that could (as the other three games on the pack) at least received a CD quality soundtrack and better voices. I believe that even the stand-alone Mega Drive, with a bigger cartridge could have delivered these changes and can't really understand why the 32X is needed.
    Anyway... The most important thing was the gameplay and overall content, and SEGA aced it even if with some limitations.

    Golden Axe 3 on the Genesis is by far my favorite in the franchise and maybe my favorite Sega game. The graphics, the option to take different paths, and especially the enemy A-I is much smarter. As I mentioned the enemy AI is much smarter making the game more fun opposed to repeated attack patterns and luring enemies off cliffs in the first 2 game (which I still enjoy too). I don't know why else they wouldn't release this gem in 1993 peak Genesis years 🤔🤯

    I generally don't end up too pleased with ROM hacks, but this one opens a can of worms I hope slippery slopes all the way to its logical end. Existing Genesis games with Arcade Backgrounds is a brilliant idea. The inclusion of the missing level segments and the Red Dragon in Turtle Village II is my favorite part of this one, even beyond the background details.
    I also hope this 32X iteration gets the Arcade voice sample treatment other Genesis version ROM hacks have had.

    This is a nice comparison, but I think we need to take into contacts that the Genesis version of Golden ax wasn’t early title for the system and the 32X version is an unofficial port with a clear knowledge of the system gathered over 3 5 years of the Genesis and it’s add on I think the Sega CD had the better audio, it was using the arcade soundtrack but it used the sound effects from the Genesis version Wilder 32X virgin is clearly the audio from the genesis version.

    This is a cool idea and it's awesome someone programmed this to a 32x cart with proper packaging. I wouldn't buy this though as Golden Axe isn't worth $50 to me. Fun game but it's short and has limited replay value.
    Even back in 1995 it would be tough to plunker down $50 for a six year old game that was available in numerous releases by that point (Genesis cart, 6 Pack cart, Sega CD pack-in). By this point we wanted games that had more depth and replay value. It wouldn't surprise me if Sega tried to re-release this for the 32x back in the day, they absolutely loved reissuing old games.

He said that the version on GBA Sega Smash Pack wasn't an arcade port but instead a port of the Megadrive/Genesis version? But surely a port of a port of an arcade game (either the GBA version or this 32X version) is still classed as an arcade conversion in it's own right?

      They did confuse us. No doubt. I went straight from Sega CD to PS1 myself. Didn't buy the Saturn until much much later (within last few years). I also have the 32X NOW, but I used my friends 32X back in the day. Definitely not worth it back in the day, but I do enjoy it now.

    Is this pushing the 32X? It seems the biggest limit for those early MD games was just the ROM chip. This is a smaller jump than Streets of Rage was from the sequel, and all that was just a ROM 4x the size. The art seems more detailed and using more tiles. Not really that much more colorful.
    I was hoping to have the scaling from the character selection implemented, and be more arcade perfect.

    • @TheLaymanVideoGamer
      @TheLaymanVideoGamer  Місяць тому

      Though this is clearly an upgrade, It's not pushing the 32X by any means. To me that's where Sega missed the boat. If you're going to create a 32-bit add-on, then there better be a lot more games (than we actually got) that show off that power.

      @@TheLaymanVideoGamer to be fair back in it’s day in its limited library half the games did do things the mega drive couldn’t. Virtua racing was a visible step up from the svp chip powered original port. As underwhelming Doom was it played at the proper frame rate, so for all its faults like small window, crap sound, enemies facing one direction, missing levels, it plays fine, a homebrew port shows what it could have been though. While the snes beats it in many ways, the choppy frame rate basically cancels out all those things and renders it unplayable. Using the Jaguar maps would have given it a better frame rate.
      Virtua fighter on it showed what you can do. The polygon count was lower, but with less flickering and smooth frame rate it was a better experience than the original Saturn game.
      As a former owner of the 32X, I have a soft spot for it. It did feel like it was a step up for the Mega Drive, but not big enough considering the Saturn and PlayStation were literally just months away.
      I would have hoped with the 32x power they would have either ported the sequel return of death adder, or just add massive improvement. What they did here they didn’t really need a 32x. A 16mbit rom chip would have done these improvements.

    Audio is different on the Mega Drive compared to the Mega CD, Mega CD has arcade audio. Mega CD version is one player only.
    You need to compare the OG arcade version to the 32x.
    And the dead enemies do not disappear on the arcade version.
    32x version has only one real difference (the background)
    Honestly a pointless conversion.

Lazy ass programming! I rate this 3 thumbs down because the programmers are using Genesis chips only and slapping the name 32x for hype! 32x is far superior then Genesis hardware specs in every way!!! You should be comparing this to the arcade version. If you absolutely must draw a Genesis comparison use the cart version, the CD version removes many sound effects to fit into RAM. Anyway, next to the arcade... Yea this version is pure trash bro! I mean for F's sake Gillis Thunderhead hasn't even got a "gold" colored axe. How hard is it to recolor a damn spright? Far as I'm concerned arcade was first, so arcade is the original definitive version. This might be better than the original port, but its clearly NOT like the arcade version (Jesus just look at them side-by-side)... So any effort involved (and whatever you paid for that abomination) was all for NOTHING.
