Arch Linux (/ɑːrtʃ/)[8][9] is an independently developed x86-64 general-purpose Linux distribution that strives to provide the latest stable versions of most software by following a rolling-release model. The default installation is intentionally minimal so that users can add only the packages they require.[10]
pacman, a package manager written specifically for Arch Linux, is used to install, remove and update software packages.[11]
Arch Linux uses a rolling release model, meaning it has no major releases. An Arch Linux installation is kept up-to-date by regularly updating the individual pieces of software that it comprises. The only "releases" are up-to-date snapshots of main system components released monthly.[12]
Arch Linux has comprehensive documentation in the form of a community-run wiki known as the ArchWiki.[13][14][15]

Linux also runs on embedded systems, i.e., devices whose operating system is typically built into the firmware and is highly tailored to the system. This includes routers, automation controls, smart home devices, video game consoles,[32] televisions (Samsung and LG Smart TVs),[33][34][35] automobiles (Tesla, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, and Toyota),[36] and spacecraft (Falcon 9 rocket, Dragon crew capsule, and the Perseverance rover).[37][38]
Linux is one of the most prominent examples of free and open-source software collaboration. The source code may be used, modified, and distributed commercially or non-commercially by anyone under the terms of its respective licenses, such as the GNU General Public License (GPL). Plasma (also known as Plasma Desktop) is a graphical shell developed by KDE for Unix-like operating systems. Plasma is a standard desktop interface. It was declared mature with the release of KDE SC 4.2.[4] It is designed for desktop PCs and larger laptops. In its default configuration it resembles KDesktop from K Desktop Environment 3, and Microsoft Windows XP; however extensive configurability allows radical departures from the default layout.[5]
Its technology is a fundamental rewrite of several desktop interaction programs included in previous KDE desktop environments for Unix-like systems, focusing on eye candy and special graphical effects. @@Yuhan-fp2gu yeah my mom used it for school and never used it since, so i installed a bootloader and ubuntu, but soon switched over to arch
@@triplelllgaming i have the feeling that something might be wrong with your installation. I run arch (btw) on a 12 year old VAIO, it takes only a couple seconds to boot… I even run KDE in it (if that makes a difference in booting time)
@@marioh5634it's likely an issue with the hard drive just dying. Old machines like this get unusably slow usually due to dying hard drives.
Spend $50 and buy a replacement SSD and it'll likely solve the problem

1.6? My pc occupies 1.7 while idling (even tho i use fedora w/hyprland and swayWM)

what are ur laptop specs?
Everyone talking about changing DE and almost no one mentioning the HDD.
Last week I formatted an old desktop I had laying around for a friend. That PC had a Core 2 Duo Q6600, 4GB of RAM and a GTX 750 and I've been using it as a spare PC for a while for some gaming and simple graphics too.
Tried formatting it and gaming on Windows 11, Manjaro KDE, PopOS and Mint and none of them was so slow.
Put a nice SSD in that thing if you want to use it and it'll fix your problem.
Of course a lighter DE and distro would also help but that ain't the main issue here.
KDE isn't that heavy on resources tbh, it runs fine even on devices as old as 15yo

yeah, i probably should, cuz the hard drive on this laptop is DEFINITELY failing to some extent.
@@triplelllgaming if it's still the one that came with the computer it probably is, but even if it wasn't you should still swap it with an SSD.
Mechanical drives are a pita to work with anyway, and I've been saved countless computers from friends and relatives that didn't want to buy a new one just by putting an SSD in and they clearly saw how unrecognizable their machine was.
You can also upgrade the RAM to 8GB to keep that PC even longer but if you had to pick one that should 100% be the SSD.

Brother it takes forever to turn on and KDE Plasma consumes too many resources for a laptop plus the games have low fps
Well, that was one heck of a long boot, but glad you decided to use Arch for that laptop instead of an old Windows version or something.
yeah it had windows 10 preinstalled but i installed rEFInd and ubuntu, then i later tried out arch

Geez, she's a bit slow, mate. I'm definitely curious about what KDE looks like these days, but it's always been too sluggish for me. With 4Gb of RAM, I likely would have opted for Openbox.

The slow boot is likely caused by the hard drive
You might also want to use fastfetch instead of neofetch; faster, maintained, and a little more information, but looks about the same

for a shitty laptop like that i suggest Lubuntu its lightweight and can run with almost no lag on anything
Good, bruh, btw u can change GRUB parameters to disable this shiiity looong boot (disable terminal on start and skip filecheck maybe (on my fedora that works)

What did you use to theme it that way?
i think the theme i used was called "utterly sweet". click get more in the kde theme settings and you should find it somewhere
use hyprland instead of kde

use something lightweight like i3. a DE probably won't perform very well with that ancient piece of hardware you got.

It isn't , I did more customization on my kde plasma than this, and the ram usage is nearly the same as it was deafault around 1.3GiB, and on windows it used to take half of my ram around 4GB
a little, but it can handle running a couple apps at once (sometimes)

Linux itself isn't just a singular operating system; rather it's a plethora of branches that are based on the Linux kernel. There are many mother branches, which include Debian (the biggest), Slackware (the oldest), and a bunch of other "obscure" branches. Arch Linux is one of these. Arch is famous because it lets the user control a lot with your OS, alongside it being open source (like most Linux distributions). With this level of customization, users can create their dream OS, which is why Arch is a fan favorite.
