After working on several dodge 4x4's for my buddies son, I'd seriously consider going with the newer 5.7 hemi engine. Reason being, after building up a 5.9 360 gas engine with the young man. Seeing all the money he spent to just get to just short of the 396 hp at the crank a stock 5.7 makes. It's far more economical to just find a wrecked truck, and pull the drive train from it, even if you have to do some frame modifications. Because for a few hundred dollars more, you can add a good cam, and valve train to it, your can make 500 hp easy. Throw a huffer on it, and your moved into a whole different class of motivating down the road.
I built my own dodge Dakota piece by piece . Started as a 87 long bed truck with no engine and a rotted body .285.00 for a 87 LA 318 ,Msd 6a ignition,and 125.00 for a 94 ax15 5 speed trans. Got a 98 8 3/4 limited slip rear axle with 355 gears . 89 cab,91 hood,89 passenger fender,90 drivers fender,95 bed LOL . Frankentruck😂. Been driving it since 2013 . truck is so much fun .
My grandfather has an old Dakota Magnum, bought brand new when I was a kid, he still has it today a 90 years old, just passed 300K miles and also just passed inspection lol... runs like a top.
My ol man had a white Shelby Dakota back in the early 90’s .....used it to tow the race car lol....stop light to stop light these trucks were pretty quick with the 3.91 gear
I had a Dakota same year mine wasn't a shelby though I'd love to have one an my first truck was a red s10 an my 4th truck was a blue s10 just like Tommy's with a built 2.8 always wanted to put v8s in them an power adders didnt happen I had kids about the same time so life took priority .. I can relate to a lot of things ..much respect to you and your family
That Dakota is in mint condition, where I work p/t here in Md, when the company buys newish pickups we strip them down to bare cab to repaint the company brown.We remove the bed, turn them upside down to chip guard and you would not believe the cross braces I’ve replaced due to them being rotted out. And I mean as new as 2015 trucks.
just have fun is what it is all about. as you learn believe me it get's easier to do. you are just starting out don't get discouraged .ask for help there is so much help out there for you. God bless
How complete was it when found? Hope Allison knows its so rare with only 1475-1500 made, maybe its best keeping it as near stock as possible. But if there's loads Shelby parts missing..? Go race it!
Bracket racing is cool! It will make you a better driver in the long run. Take your time and don't let anyone rush you into anything. Do what you're comfortable with.
you have to start somewhere and go straight to nos first so she can get the feel then go to 2 big ol turbos but hope yall the best of luck and cant wait to watch more of yalls videos

Smart move to get involved with bracket racing first. A good sticky track for more control and to help build confidence. I bracket race myself but I enjoy watching the no prep racing as well. Good luck and be safe.
let me tell u something abt the charging systems on these trucks, they dont charge like 13.5 '14 volts, they charge near what battery voltage is or slightly above. so dont think your alternator is bad if u put the meter on it while running and it says 13.6 volts

Good deal. Like those trucks. I just fixed up my 99 durango 318 and added twin gt35 turbos. Blew out the exhaust gaskets and busted two header bolts on the dyno. Replacing them now and then dyno run again. I'm new to the racing scene as well and I'm still getting use to working my videos for UA-cam. You both are doing great.

also the a/c and heat vents are vacuum controlled, make sure u have no vacuum leaks in the little vacuum lines.
