A good film and a good message. As a karate student of 15 years, I would agree with all of the sentiments. Karate is also a life long pursuit. No retirement age, so you get many students of all ages. I love it.

Recently I joined a dojo near my area, and I am so glad I did it's now been about 4 months and a half. I started off very worried and got frustrated at myself for not being able to do some of the kicks and kata, but my sensei would keep reminding me that I had only just started out and I wouldn't be perfect at everything. After my first 2 months I had earned my first belt (Red with black stripe) it was 3rd belt up from white. After every session I'd continue practicing perfecting the kata I had to learn and getting the kicks and punches to the best I could. My most recent grading was last week actually and I was shaking like crazy but I got a hold of my nerves and went out onto the mat and did my absolute best and according to all three instructors I did amazing I got the 5th highest score in the class 74/80 and moved up not one but 2 belts I would've gone to normal red but I skipped it and went to yellow! I know I am only a beginner and my story isn't very long but I just want other beginners to know that YOU CAN DO IT!!! all it takes is belief dedication and determination and don't be afraid of your worried about the new people maybe ask around in your school or local area and see if anyone you know goes to karate having someone you know there can help a ton and I should know.

I used to play karate back in 2017 when I was 9 years old and took the yellow belt but then I stopped
Now I'm 14years old and I decided to go back to karate, tomorrow is my test to retake the yellow belt and I'm really happy
Between everyone in the class, I was the only one with a white belt and I kinda felt ashamed but I remembered that...
    We all start somewhere.
    Right?
I also have my body as my biggest insecurity, and that's one of the reasons I started playing karate once again, which is to get fit in a fun way because I'm not a fan of gyms, anyway, when I saw how everyone was fit and had great bodies meanwhile I'm bigger than them I felt ashamed again but I remembered that I'm here to get fit and again
    We all start somewhere.
Always remember that, and no matter what's your age, your looks and body image, just do it
    It's Now, or Never.

you don't 'play' at karate, it's not a game...it is a martial art, life long and takes dedication, if you're 'playing', you're (mc)dojo needs to reassess what it teaches. the other goals however, you can and will achieve through diligence and dedication- good luck, keep going, and remember, it's not about belts, but about the practitioner and spirit.

Before 1955, Korea did not have the term taekwondo. Korean martial arts were mainly based on karate, tang shou and a small number of folk style. During the Japanese occupation, a large number of young Korean students went to Japan to study and received systematic training in Japan (trained in karate). After returning to Korea, they started to set up a gym to teach students.

if this is legit, then I say do it!! never be afraid, never give in, never give up! I know many people who have started their journeys later than this, and even in my own dojo we have people young and old doing and enjoying Karate! don't let fear stand in your way of achieving something amazing! :) Anyone can be a warrior- the secret to karate is in your heart and mind, and just stepping into your first class means you've already achieved something special! :) A lot of karate is non/light contact, so don't let this put you off! I'm 33 myself and hoping to achieve my 1st dan this year, after along journey that has spanned over 10 years- I have stopped because of medical reasons, personal reasons and lots more, but I've always gone back into the dojo and stuck with it- my journey is my journey, it doesn't matter when or how you get there or how long, just get there! I always remember something from the Karate Kid 3 (cheesy yes, but very true) 'Ok lose to opponent, must not lose to fear!' I wish you luck, and I so hope you start (or 3 months later by now, have started) your journey in any martial art, Karate or not- you won't look back!

Peter McNally hi, I appreciate your comments. I am 45, and started about 2 years ago. I have my green belt now in Shorin-Ryu. I honestly am doing it mainly just for the workout, otherwise I wouldn't be getting much physical activity at all, and it's fun. Honestly I hate testing, but learning the techniques and working out with friends is good.

I'm 32, have started karate a month ago, so I'm as new as you can get. I was never talented in athletics growing up, didn't really enjoy team sports after elementary school (soccer is huge here), I'm not a fitness maniac and I'm more on the chubby side than the slim one, but I started. I don't know if I'll become "a warrior", but so far it's been interesting, different and a fun experience.
All I can suggest is that, if you haven't started already and you are far from being of average fitness, to start jogging and some kind of strength training, at least enough so you won't feel like your heart will explode out of your chest after one hour of strenuous physical activity. I've found (at least so far) karate as a beginner to not be as hard as one hour of jogging and calisthenics, but it's not a cake walk and certain body parts do get sore that wouldn't otherwise. I try to keep my jogging+calisthenics routine going on par with karate, even though sometimes my body is too sore to move comfortably, to see what happens; so it is something that might happen to you as well if you choose to start.
Anyway, good day and good luck.

Very nicely presented. I'd recommend the classic book "Moving Zen" by C.W. Nicol, about the path that a young Brit took studying Shotokan karate in Japan.
I've trained most of my life since I was 11. I'm 67 now and can say that it's been one of the richest experiences of my life. Naturally I've had to adapt to getting older but it continues to be a wonderful journey and I feel blessed to have started it.

IMO, Karate is fine, but it has holes in its technique. I suggest adding some boxing for the footwork, hand positioning, and punching.with power. Karate does not use enough pulled punches and too many pushed punches. Obviously, being comfortable with grappling completes the fighter.

I was put off by a local school that was run by someone who was only interested in making money. Back in the nineties, there was only one karate school in town and the owner had a near monopoly in the county. I left after 4 months, a shame as a proper school with a good sensei would have kept me training.

Not sure if it was a lack of preparation, nerves, not taking it seriously or just plain stupidity .Anyway I was so embarrassed and humiliated that I never went back to that school. In later years I was always pretty good in practice combat and exercises but would get stage fright for those fucking belt tests.

It takes practice and determination to be flexible. Also set your own goals. If I've learned one thing starting karate it's that everyone's body is different. Some people are just naturally more flexible than others. So don't compare to others. Just focus on achieving your goals!

That’s obviously one aspect of karate or any martial arts system. Karate as many have said, is a lifetime journey and the more one practices and internalises, the better he/ she may become not only as a fighter but also mentally and spiritually. Most people starting young also gain self confidence, learn respect and etiquette and especially respect for the elderly. And there’s no first strike in karate but defence and building character. This is all coincidentally part of my religious beliefs which compliments lifelong learning. We build lifelong friendships along the way and if lucky, get to travel. How many times does an ordinary person get into a fight on the street? Of course, there are fighting systems that teach to harm, hurt, injure or even kill. If that’s the focus, one may not even need karate or any martial arts. It is in the essence and the internalised spirit of the karateka! Osu!
