The two of you are such a joy to watch! Ron, last week you made some comments that you have repeated several times throughout the time my husband and I have watched both channels, which is well over a yr ago. You and Justine are not broke. You and your families and friends are wealthier than the majority of the planet with all the skills and traditions you have preserved throughout the generations. You are smarter and more educated than most people as well. Never underestimate yourself. You two are a WEALTH of knowledge!

Thanks for a great video. After this was finished I went to my local hardware store. (which was open today) and bought a windshield hammer with seat belt cutter. Your message must have gotten to a lot of people because he only had 3 left. He asked me if it was on the news and I told him that it was featured on my favourite UA-cam channel. Then I told him why. He toke 2 of the hammers of the shelf and put them behind the counter and told me that it's for his wife and daughter.
Thank you for sharing this. You don't realize it but you might have saved a few lives today.
Blessing to all who have lost a loved one on the Bridge accident in Baltimore.

The divining rods are legit. We used to use them to locate water lines when I was working for an electrical company that had to dig 6 feet into the ground to lay the power lines. What you can do is get a wire copper clothes hanger and cut two pieces off of it. Bend them into an L shape and just lightly hold the shorter end in your hands. When they cross the void in the earth, they'll automatically swing towards each other. It's fun to use them. Try it sometime.

I ordered my brand new Jeep Patriot several years ago with manual windows and door locks. I haven't missed power windows and door locks yet. My dad used to say the more stuff you have on a car the more chance there is for stuff to stop working.

  • @pepsiman990

That was on an episode of Mythbusters. You either have to immediately open the door when you hit the water, or you have to wait until the car fills with water and open the door then. Basically, you need to wait until the pressure equals out otherwise there is a few hundred pounds of pressure pushing against the door. The window breakers should work either way.

I had an ancestor (he was the grandfather of my Revolutionary War patriot) who was a periwig maker in London. The noun wig came about as a shortened form of the word periwig. Although wigs were worn by the upper class and making one took a great deal of skill, periwig makers were among the poorest of the skilled trades. One can imagine that after the French revolution, the poor wig makers were in desperate straits indeed.

I say Car-mul because I'm a Southerner 😛 also I bet hot caramel feels like hot glue, I stuck my fingertips in some hot glue and that was the worst burn I've ever felt because it was thick & stuck right to my poor burning skin. Unlike caramel, hot glue also gives a slight chemical burn, which didn't help matters 😢

When you warned against pouring the caramel over ice cream it reminded me of maxing Jack Wax as a child. Quite common here in the Northeast, you heat up maple syrup and then pour over snow outside. The instant hot to cold turns it to candy almost instantly. Depending on how hot you heat it, anything from a hard, brittle candy to a softer taffy consistency. It’s sooooo yummy! 🍁

    I love carmel so much.
So, I watch a lot of survival stuff. And right before that tragedy I was watching sinking car videos. They said...
•Roll down your windows, do not open the doors. (Even electric windows should work long enough for you to get the windows down before it short circuits.)
•Do not climb to the back seat.
•Get out of the vehicle as fast as you can, you only have seconds.
On an unrelated video, do not get a Tesla! They made a special glass that keeps the glass together if you're ever in an accident, but because it doesn't shatter, you'd be stuck inside the car. They couldn't even break the glass with a small sledge hammer

    Hi Ron and Justine,
Thank you for supplying the information about the window-breaking hammers. It’s important to know. If anyone is going over a bridge, and you don’t have a device to break the windows, please wind your windows down before getting on the bridge. With that said, we will be getting one just in case there is ever a time a child or pet locked in a car.
On another note, I’m not an expert candy maker, but I have made more than my share of caramel. To achieve a firmer set, it would work best to take the boiling ingredients to the “hard ball” stage on a Candy thermometer (250-265 F) rather than reducing the amount of liquid.
    Blessings to you both!

Oh my gosh! You guys bring me to tears. Murkin? I've been in a situation that I needed to break a window. I was a caretaker for a 400lb disabled woman who tried to drive her specialized van. Long story short, she backed up into the collum that was in a parking garage and the structure was coming down. It threw her to the back of the van. She had a ten inch gash in her leg Broken glass was everywhere but the drivers and passengers front seat windows. The engine was running in reverse. I was affraid it was going to catch on fire. I picked up rocks trying to get the window to shatter so I could turn off the ignition. It didn't work. I was looking for something bigger to use when the aid trucks and firemen showed up. Everybody is getting one of those tools in their Christmas stockings this year. Thank you for your public service.

Mmmmmm! I love making candy. Especially at Christmas.
So, the Caramel candy base can take on different flavors by adding some Loranne oils into the hard candy mixture before its pored out to cool. So good! I am wondering if they were able to make it different flavors like that back in the early 1800s? Maybe put orange peel or lemon peel in some cloth and let it cook with the sugar. I bet some blue spruce baby tips might give a nice taste, too. Or lavender...mint...etc.
I believe more boiling time for a more defined shaped soft caramels. It would make them a bit darker, too. Adding some finely chopped nuts might be good, too. Or nuts on the top. Overall, homemade caramels are the best!
Well, Happy Easter Week to you both and your families! God bless! Sue 😊❤

Not only is corn syrup bad for you, but it cuts down on the taste. Get a candy thermometer. Soft ball/ fudge is 240 degrees. Or the old way is to drop a small amount (1/2 teaspoon or so) into a glass of cold water. Pour out the water. The candy will be on the bottom so continue pouring it onto your fingertips. If you can hold it and it's soft, then it's done. So it's soft ball. This is totally accurate. Have fun!

One of my grandmother's recipes dating from the 1850s or 60s I forget which as the cookbook is I think the 4th or 5th edition says you crush it up and you put it on top of little finger cakes that's what they called I guess finger cakes I don't remember the proper name and it's a nice decoration.

I say Carmel like Ron says. From Agawam MA that's the way we've always pronounced it.

Yes Rob is saying right. There is a tiny piece of carbon on the tip that breaks the grass. I've seen kids throw the carbon tip from a spark plug at store window to watch them shatter.

Mythbusters tested the car under water thing years ago. Yes if you don't get out before it goes under, you have to wait for it to equalize pressure.

MY neighbor was outside cleaning near my window and the convo turned to STD, Merkens, Crabs, Prostitutes. Your show is never like this. Great Topic for Easter guys! I am getting a kick of the segway from Candy to Std's etc.

I’m basically from northern New England and say it like it would be spelled carmull. The pre 1860 carmel is like the maple lollipops I got as a child…

Justine, the 2-ingredient recipe makes me think about The Little House books. Laura talked about pouring a mixture over snow to make? candy snow? I'll need to find my Little House Cookbook and see if it's in there. Until then, love from the Southern California desert 🏜
