=ABOUT ME=
Hi, my name's Reece. I'm a passionate Creator, Transportation Planner, and Software Developer, interested in rapid transportation all around my home base of Toronto, Canada, as well as the whole world!
Its was a bad mistake by Vancouver Wa to defeat the referendum to extend MAX.
They called it "The Crime Train" lol
It woulda been huge for both cities if they approved the yellow line extension to Vancouver. I know a lot of people who live in Vancouver and work in portland. Actually about half of my coworkers lol
Yeah, they didn't want to pay for it, despite the terrible rush hour congestion they get from their residents commuting.
It was bad for my paycheck aswell
We should kick them out of the state of Washington for that
If the WES could go around 70 mph and linked Portland to Salem it would be a game changer for the whole area.
A man can dream...
WES needs to die. It will never go to Portland, it costs trimet roughly $90 per boarding! Seriously. That's $180 for a round trip. Look it up. The fare is $2.50. A monumental mistake that they can not shut down due to contacts running for decades.
@@duaneeitzen1025 This is only true for FY2021 due to drastically reduced ridership due to the, you know, *gestures at everything* (MAX/Bus per-boarding cost increased by similar percentages, which also correspond with the drop off in ridership nearly linearly). When ridership picks back up, it’ll get back to previous per-rider cost of about ~$20. That’s still more than MAX/Bus by a fair amount, but is significantly more in the realm of reasonable.
@@duaneeitzen1025 Ridership is so low because frequency is so low especially with the 45-minute schedule. And it really needs to start with one train earlier in the morning to get the 6am workforce to work. More riders is how we get the cost/trip down. Maybe never as low max, but within the range of many bus routes is feasible. FWIW - ridership made a substantial rebound with the start of the 217 construction project. In the last couple weeks I've seen every row occupied as it leave BTC.
Though I did watch the Train are Awesome clip on the WES, I forget if the platforms are long enough for two cars.
If so, two-car trains could be used for service to and from Salem.
Thing is, the low ridership would make this a gamble. Surveys would need to be dispersed to those living near the projected extension.
Nah too convenient we don’t want trashy people from Salem pretending they’re from the city lol
I've been taking the MAX to PSU for a little bit now and it's honestly such a godsend, driving in Portland is a nightmare and I'm grateful that we have decent enough light rail service to get me to my classes.
I don’t know if traveling to the city is something you guys feel like you have to do in order to make one of your future of transit videos, but if not I’d really like to see one of Los Angeles. Their transit system has been really expanding in the last few years and I believe they have plenty of plans and hopes for the future!
Reece Martin of course, it’s probably a larger project for sure. Take your time!
His voice was so much higher pitched back then, and he kind of had an accent
You missed one: Trimet is also considering building a MAX line on or under Powell Blvd to the current Green Line station at i205. The 2020 transportation bond would provide the initial funding for a feasibility study. The details can be found in the massive transportation bond PDF that Trimet released in February.
That would be cool. What they should do is put a streetcar in the middle lane on Powell. Powell and Division both used to have streetcars/trollys.
Portland, one of the few cities in the US that gets light rail (mostly) right.
Turns out all you needed to do was build it in places people already live and give it segregated right of way.
@@peskypigeonx Denver is not really doing it right. Denver's light rail has been built in the places with the easiest right-of-way instead of the places that would get the most ridership
@@rockym9981 Let me change my answer: Portland, Dallas, SLC, that’s probably it
@@rockym9981 agree that is something that Denver could improve on(which admittedly isn’t easy as corridor with space and demand light rail aren’t easy to come by). A lot of the issues with ridership has come from the bus system layout being outdated and the light rail likely wouldn’t be as remote with a bus route redrawing. Unfortunately, RTD has also suffered from a shortage of drivers that they’ll need to deal with before improving busses. Denver’s set up isn’t too bad for the most areas, it just needs a much better bus system in order for the rail to be more effective
Light rail (mostly right). Freeways (which are used by a jillion more people than light rail), not so much.
There also could be a possibility of an entirely new MAX line to the Port of Portland if the Portland Diamond Project builds a new stadium at the abandoned Terminal 2
Second!!!! Please do Honolulu next
First!! Yaaaaay for awesome consistent content!!
Edit: Glad to see some American cities are taking transit seriously as well!! Have you done any thinking about how cities in the US Southwest could expand their mass transit systems (Las Vegas, Phoenix, Tuscon, Mesa, Alberquerque, El Paso, Salt Lake City, Denver, Coloardo Springs, etc...?)
They'd probably do Phoenix and Tucson together cause both of them have short metro systems
TriMet just open Portland's first BRT on Division. Two more are in the planning stage on 82nd and TV hwy.
They never take advantage of major freeways. Why not deploy one on US-26 to connect more rural communities?
Just FYI, Amtrak also has stops in the metro area at Vancouver WA and Oregon City.
One thing that isn't talked about much is how awesome the Trimet ticket system is. $5 for 2.5 hours or $10 for the entire day and that one ticket is good for light rail, street car, and buses.
it’s $2.50 for 2 1/2 hour or $5 for an entire day… half that for disabled/elderly or Low Income
I used to live in Portland so this brings back memories
I used to live in beaverton however when I went dt I never used to drive just take thw max cause traffic and parking was a mess
I never understood why the red line just stopped at Beaverton it would be great to see it extend to Gresham
Gresham ? You mean Hillsboro
@@AirshipsAviation11 yea my bad
Hello, Can you make a map of Rapid Transit projects in NJ/NYC metropolitan area please?
Nice video. Thanks! (Oh, and BTW, it's pronounced Wil LAM et River.) :)
Hoping the new green line for the max gets added, southwest Portland currently dosent have the best transit via rail, or at times bus
The budget measure did not pass in 2020. The latest news I can find on the project just says that it was paused.
I would like to see a subway in the future.
as a portlander, its more expensive to have a underground metro for us, and buget is our key factor in not letting us expand the lightrail and items, plus the max actually acts alot like a streetcar service to us and we have actual streetcars, but if we had to have a dedicated area for maxes and buses we've made several before,
Ok, I know this is the east but I so wish their was a connection from line 2 to Central Mississauga
What’s the first system you would like to try next when the pandemic is over?
Could you go over the wes extension b study to Salem in more detail?
Well it’s probably not happening anytime soon due to poor ridership probably due to the fact that it’s easier to take Amtrak or just taking your car
Can you do Edmonton and/or Calgary next?
Although the Portland Aerial Tram is similar in some ways to the SFU Gondola Metro Vancouver... really it's only similar in that it serves a university on top of a hill. As for technology, Portland's system is more like the Grouse Mountain Gondola than what is planned for SFU.
Quick note - The Montgomery Park Extension Route has changed to follow NW 23rd Ave Until NW Wilson & NW Roosevelt, then going west and terminating at Montgomery Park itself.
How about an underground subway, or a Portland Metro in the future.

The large issue, IIRC, is that there are underground streams that could cause a problem.
Okay. Thank you for trying
Can you do Norfolk and Hampton roads next
@Richard Joniec
It was but at least its something
I dream of the Down Tow n Tunnel
Portland's MAX system is slowly starting to turn into a Stadtbahn...
LRT doing HRT's work... you can go so far until youll need to switch over to heavy rail...
Headways on the MAX are infrequent enough that the smaller trains are a godsend. Just taking the red and green lines from near the airport to Clackamas Town Center, the wait for the trains was excruciating and the whole trip was way slower than even the worst traffic on the freeway. Most of the MAX is totally separated from car traffic so it's pretty quick once the thing finally shows up. The exception is downtown, where they really do run up the street like trams, stopping every 20ft. A downtown bypass or tunnel would be a huge deal. The rest of the network is fine with the small and more frequent trains. Plus I think the WES really soured TriMet on heavy rail, because ridership on that thing is a joke compared to the "light" MAX lines.
@@JETZcorp I just saw a video on the WES... it's a joke! A single track, one DMU "train" that only operates 10 times a day? It's like TRIMET didn't even want it in the first place. Please! Double track it, and convert it to another MAX line or a light metro like Vancouver's Skytrain
The river is prnounced " Wah-lam-it" not willemit
How to tell someone isn't a local.
The streetcar should be extended to NE 15 Av
Can trimet going to Salem?
A regional rail line would make sense sometimes like the sounder in Seattle
How Vancouver is near Portland?
They mean Vancouver Washington
The HBC Fort Vancouver is on the north bank of the Columbia, where Vancouver Washington is now. The HBC Factor (Sir James Douglas) had to vacate Ft Vancouver when the boundary was set to the 49th parallel, giving the north bank of the Columbia to the US Oregon territory.
2 Vancouvers.
1 in South Washington and 1 in BC
To Oregon City by 2029 !
Willamette was mispronounced oof
Will-AMM-it, dammit
Is there any way they’re considering on keeping the perception (or even reality) of crime on the system? That alone could be all it takes to make even the more progressive minded suburbs’ residents rail against any proposed expansions, much less even ride the thing…
And nevermind transit for a sec, how about completely replacing that one 100+ year old drawbridge that somehow has I-5 on it for some damnedest reason first chance? Even questionably competent states or worse already have a game plan for total replacements in place when the bridge is already the better part of 50-60 years old…
Nobody in their right mind will use transit as a getaway vehicle. Cameras, people, lights, and transit police will increase the likelihood of you getting caught. Studies fail to find a direct causal link to crime and transit access. The perception of crime is a lie built on racism that's propagated by the highway lobby, auto manufacturers, and big oil. You can probably guess why.
Good video, but please never try to pronounce "Willamette" ever again.
Also the Yellow and Orange lines aren't separate. In 2015 we just extended the Yellow Line and for whatever reason instead of just calling the whole thing Yellow, the trains on the line just change their names to "Orange" once they cross the Steel Bridge and everywhere south of that.
Im 99% sure it was a deal about getting the funding cause i dont think people are as willing to pay for a "extention" rather than a new line,
Who's "we" here?
yeah i never 'got' that. Im assuming railfans...
Light rail has not operated in the black since it was built. Your tax dollars going to waste. Also learn the proper pronunciation of our rivers and city’s.
These guys put out a lot of videos on a lot of cities. I don't mind if they make the same pronunciation errors everyone else does. As far as the light rail, I basically agree. We're paying as much as a full size metro, but the size and density of the city only supports these little trains that other cities use for streetcars. So the city are trying to make land so expensive as to FORCE the density high enough to make the city work for transit. Part of that involves not spending a dime on freeway expansion for 40 years. Bad traffic and unaffordable housing are good! Come live in a tiny shoebox in a tower and ride our trains! We can be like a big-kid city. Meanwhile 95% of the population is stuck in grinding traffic on rusty 110-year-old drawbridges, and that's STILL faster than the MAX. Driving to Tri-Cities is like visiting the Promised Land. A quarter the population of Portland and double the freeway surface area. Getting around that place is fast like teleportation compared to Portland. Transit is fun to think about but it sure is miserable in the real world.
@@JETZcorp spot on man! I agree fully. I live in Vancouver Washington and commute to Sherwood. It’s not fun. Lol
