I don't think this is true about the velocity and both hitting the ground at the same time. In general, yes, but there is such thing as escape velocity from the earth's gravitational pull is there not?
@@alexsafayan7684 I "self taught" in over 6 months, found some free tutors, completed the khan academy course 1 and a half times, bought 2 ap review books, and "practiced" every* day for at least an hour, not including the actual ap course which I was in for a semester. I took plenty of practice tests too, from and outside of my books. This test was all that mattered to me. I want to say I should've practiced more, but I can't help but think I was always overcomplicating something which prevented me from getting anything done in my "learning" which used up so much time. when the kinetic energy or the rolling cylinder from 1:15:144 is shared between tranlational kinetic energy and rotational kinetic energy, are they shared equally? So dividing the total kinetic energy by 2 will result in the kinetic energy for the rotational component?
Knight You cannot divide by two. Basically, the easiest thing to do is to write the rotational kinetic energy in terms of linear velocity. Translational kinetic energy is always 1/2mv^2 and rotational KE is 1/2 I w^2. Your I depends on the object you have. Say for example its a sphere (I=2/5mr^2). We can also write angular velocity as linear velocity divided by radius (w = v/r). Square that to get v^2/r^2. Now multiply this by 1/2 I. You will see the r^2 cancels out leaving you with 2/10 mv^2 (i.e 1/2Iw^2= 2/10 mv^2). Adding this to your translational kinetic energy yields 7/10mv^2. Notice that dividing this by 2 would yield the incorrect answer.
