- A serial predator dubbed Mr. Cruel had an incredible impact on Australia in the late 1980’s - 90’s. The masked assailant, who police believe may be responsible for around a dozen attacks on children across Melbourne, could still be alive.

Oh that mother’s pain, It just broke my heart😢
Same. Absolutely awful 😢
And yet I have a suspicion that the monster not only saw this, but may have shown the devastated mother to the abducted daughter. Extreme psychopathy, extreme malignant, sadistic narcissism. Getting off on causing pain, makes him feel good.
@@raphaellavictoria01I pray not.
Yes. Her pain was so profound. Of course it would be considering what she was going through. I just can’t even imagine it. Broke my heart too.
Ut gave me a shiver down my spine when that mother was crying as a mom and nan for 2 or 3 seconds its like I felted her pain that that was too much for me I can not imagine what the parents went through I pray for them
When her mother held up the favorite dress 👗 and said she wanted her to come home and wear it. That just breaks you. So heartbreaking and I know what it’s like to lose a daughter.
I’m so sorry, I just cannot imagine!
I'm so sorry. You must be so strong.
Heartbreaking. It's so heartbreaking.
I'm sorry for the loss of your daughter. A mother's sorrow for the loss of her child is the most heart-wrenching thing a person will ever experience. God bless you 🙏💔
I know….her pain is excruciating my heart breaks for her and any parent who had to go through the worst pain and heartache imaginable. When she held up her dress, the waterworks started, it truly tore my heart, my goodness…😢😢
I'm so so sorry 😢❤
I watch so much true crime but that news conference was one of the most heart breaking I have seen.
Same, never forgot
If they offered Life-Time Free Chinese food, they may have gotten her back. People Love Chinese Food.

Exactly what i was thinking too.. he must be someone who knows alot about forensics for sure, especially back then, it was rare for any old Joe to just know and understand forensic evidence.
Spot on !!
And it wouldn't be the first time a cop uses his job as an advantage either!! That's so disgusting and sickening...
I can't watch this.. Way too sad
As a teenager in the 70s I worked at their restaurant in Bulleen..
They were the nicest people you could ever meet
It’s nice to have people who actually knew them posting favourable comments … rather than people who didn’t know them repeating malicious rumours.
By the way, I trust that the picture of their Bulleen restaurant is actually the real picture? The TV video has a Lower Plenty café instead of the Eltham one that they really did own.
@@penguinvic9892 Their restaurant in Bullen was at the Bulleen Village Shopping Centre on Manningham Road
I worked there around 1975 from memory... They use to put on a full banquet for the staff before dinner service....
@@Wandafulofit That’s a real nice story. I’ve heard that they gave left over food to homeless people, too, but I cannot claim whether this is true or not.
After their daughter’s abduction, trade dropped away to near zero. People were sympathetic but that didn’t extend to patronising the restaurants. This wasn’t helped by well-meaning police staking out the restaurants and being customers. Police have hearts and families too, but it may have spooked out potential customers as well.
@@Wandafulofit I heard they arrived in Australia in 1976. Is it possible it was later than '75? Also, I was under the impression they didn't start a business there until 1981. Is it possible they were working at the Bulleen restaurant in the late 70s when it was owned by someone else before taking ownership of the business in 1981?
@@melbournemarvels
It quite possibly was 1976...
And yes they may have been working for someone else (family member?) as I remember an older man cooking
Here’s a long shot theory. He was a cop, and that’s why all the evidence is missing and that’s how he was able to carry these out almost perfectly. He didn’t kill the first victims because he didn’t need to and the last victim he “needed” to. And then he went dormant because he knew the rest of the community of cops would’ve had their dander up over this and looking for this. He knew what the penalty looked like and wanted to switch MOs if he ever returned back to killing. Idk how difficult it was to obtain a handgun back then in Australia or how the police handled issued firearms but this should be looked into.
agree, he probably a cop, or never committed a crime after that
It’s frightening that he’s never been caught, i hope that one day justice is served.

I don't know this case that well but if there is physical evidence such as DNA then it can be solved. If not then I can't see it ever being solved.
I used to go to the Chan's restaurant every Friday night during this time period. They were lovely people, Phylis was a great hostess and we would often see the girls there. The place had a great ambience with everyone feeling welcome and cared for. The abduction of Karmein was one of those crimes that really affect everyone who was aware of it at the time. So sad RIP beautiful girl 🌷
My goodness how terrible
My heart just breaks listening to her mother 😢. My Lord I can’t imagine what she’s still going through to this day. My condolences to the family and friends 🙏🏼🕊️🙏🏼
I remember watching this news report back in 1991. Mrs Chan's pleas for her daughter's return have haunted me from that day. The discovery of Carmen's remains a year later devastated a nation. RIP Karmein. 😪
But still you are misspelling her name.
P.S.Btw,this emoji depicts sleepiness,Zzz.
@@RahilPelichev Yes, my apologies. Corrected.
Yeah I will always remember how gut-wrenching that press conference her parents did.
Would have been solved had it not been for the bungling incompetence of losing the physical evidence that would have held dna.
Sadly this seems way to common... mishandling of evidence by police is frighteningly endemic... more disturbing during eras where CODIS, IFIS, IBIS & such exist..
No way that such things could had happened. In every work environment there's procedure to prevent mistake and for such high level jobs such as criminal investigation they lost physical evidence ? Sounds more like corruption
Probably was a police officer. Or a friend of police. Australia is insanely corrupt, nobody will ever really know how corrupt they actually are.
Literally just google police charged with historical offences and see how many were charged after multiple crimes only to be caught years later. Imagine how many got away with it. It was probably a cop or a relative/friend of one.
Perhaps. If that persons DNA is on record
Karmein’s mother clearly loves her, it shows in her desperation to get her child back at the press conference. Heart wrenching! 😢
Oh my that mother. Screaming and crying. That deep in the gut, heart ripping cry for her daughter. Breaks my own heart for her and her mother.
The case with the four sisters who slept in the same room, where the police thinks that the murderer had read the article of them in the newspaper; that case made me think of all the mothers(and some fathers) who openly shares details about their homes and the childrens hobbies, daily routines, and careful and detailed walks through the houses showing where the rooms are,the hallways, who sleeps in wich room...
totally agree...bane of social media
I was 12 at the time and will never forget the terror this monster put so many through. I lived not far away and this creep haunted my nightmares, I will never forget the pain Karmeins mother experienced, so horrific. something I will never forget.

Watching that mother cry for her baby gave me a lump in my throat 😣
What made it worse for me is - you can see she had planned what she was going to say, as an appeal to her daughter to come home. But she doesn't last 2 seconds before the turmoil, grief, rage just completely take over and she directly addresses the kidnapper.
There's no doubt in my mind, if she was in the same room as him at that moment, she would kill him with her bare hands immediately. It hurts to see someone in that much pain.
That mother's plea for her baby back is gut wrenching. That's the worst situation for any parent to endure, disappearance of a child. They don't know if their baby is dead or alive. You picture your baby calling for your help and you can't. My heart goes out to any parent who's had a child abducted.
Her poor, sweet mother. Even in the first minutes, this is horrifically evocative.
Ron Iddles said in his series that a Melbourne underworld identity told him that this kidnapper/killer died in 1992 and that’s why the crimes stopped.
If that’s true, it’s a shame he’ll never be punished for his crimes, but thank god he can’t hurt anyone else
Every parents pain is unfortunately on tv for everyone to see. I still pray for those families
The pain I felt for Mrs Chan during that press conference was so intense, I watch a lot of true crime but that one hit hard. Poor darling.
Oh my God, that poor mother, heartbreaking ❤
I get the chills every time I hear Mrs. Chan. This needs to be solved.
As a mother who lost a child, I still can't fathom these parents pain. It's one thing losing a baby, through miscarriage, or stillbirth like my daughter, or SIDS... Its another thing entirely, to have them ripped away from you in this manner, and never really getting answers, or any real justice. Unfathomable. The mothers cries tore at my soul 😢
The scary part is nobody knows who Mr cruel is he is still out there
Police believe he is no longer alive, or still in jail.

The victims should have sued the police over the lost evidence. They lost everything from 3 cases, just as DNA was advancing to the point where samples could have made a case.
The victims should have sued the police also for telling international profilers in 1991 that all 4 crimes of 1987-91 took place during school holidays or breaks. This led respected profilers to conclude that there was a high probability that the offender worked in a school in some capacity.
The problem was that only 2 of the 4 crimes took place during school breaks and NONE remotely suggest school employment. The 3 July 1990 Tuesday night crime took place in a normal school week in term 2 for virtually all schools in the State of Victoria.
Yet the official profile with this mistake in it was treated as an article of faith for more that 30 years.
The error was called out by a Melbourne newspaper in April 2022, after the official profile was exposed as flawed by an ex-employee of the College 2 of the victims attended.
They LOST everything from 3 cases? How is that not intentional? Everything points to someone from inside/with access to the files. Who else could have done it? No way it just happened to just disappeared by coincidence the evidence of just those cases
Surely familial DNA could stitch up Mr. Cruel in this day and age....if they kept the evidence.
Im in tears hearing her dear mother's pain. Just so heartbreaking. I've never heard a mother in so much agony. And I can't watch this one. I've only watched the first 5 minutes. RIP sweet little angel.
The poor family I suspect the poor girl saw him then that was it he killed her as police said. Well he must be dead if he stopped they never found out who did it even now?
I don't know whether I can watch this. I've watched all kinds of documentaries on murders but find it difficult to watch those about children. Having watched the mother's anguish I'm hesitant to watch. It feels wrong to eavesdrop on her family's pain
I see you watch true crime.....do you also always fish for attention?
@@shawnmcdoge2215 I see you are an unpleasant person. Do you always look for negative attention? Unfortunately for you, it is a sign of borderline personality disorder, which is untreatable. I can't believe that evil like this exists in the world. Why, how?
New evidence suggests he had medical training and under Investigation had found that he may have had been employed as an electrician, as drop off points are in line with electrical grids.
A witness has also testified to say that an electrical company car was seen near one of the victim's prior to abduction.
The child saw the electrical company man acting strange and looking over the fence.

I was only 7 or 8 around this time and I still remember this. So heartbreaking.
Awwe poor parents l9ok how devastated they are deepest sympathy to her poor family world is full of demons
I do believe the reason for killing karmein is, she saw his face maybe, even recognised him and he felt she had to be silenced. The theory, he could have had connection to law enforcements practices and procedures could also hold water.
He could have been the father of a classmate.
My heart is absolutely broken for the families of any abducted child. For the Chan family. I am so so sorry 😞
At 27:50 is a photo of a café at Lower Plenty which probably didn’t belong to the Chan family. Back in 1991 they did own an upmarket Cantonese restaurant called Mings, near the Lower Eltham Park. They also owned a restaurant at Bulleen (correctly indentified) in the video, and possibly another according to the 1991 business phone book.
Recent researchers have claimed that the Chan family never owned the takeaway café at Lower Plenty.
I grew up in that area and am only a few years younger than Karmein. I remember being scared during that time, especially after a friend of mine was followed, and I had an odd experience with a strange man near Eltham Lower Park.
@@wannabebluestockingThanks for your input here. Your experiences would have been unnerving to say the least.
Lower Eltham Park was just across the road from the victim’s family restaurant and a 15-20 minute walk to the first victim’s home. Some researchers say the large ride on model railway here may have a place in these linked crimes i.e. 1988 victim lived near a railway station and was left near a railway line. 1990 victim lived relatively close to a railway line and was left near the old abandoned Outer Metro Line. 1991 victim’s remains were left a short walk from a railway line, and the college the last 2 victims attended was sited along a light rail line.
The police profile claimed the offemder was highly mobile but all this sounds like someone who at least had trains as a hobby. The Lower Eltham Park had multiple reasons available why anyone would be there so it is almost perfect for surveillance.
Oh my God my heart is broken for that mother the pain in her voice oh my God my sincere condolences
Seems unlikely that someone did this to send a message. Wouldn’t they put her body somewhere to be discovered early? Shot three times in the head and dumped to be found immediately would send the message, not finding skeletal remains a year later…

@@helinajade6543it would be worth going to the police, especially if you’re still in touch with those other kids who can corroborate your story, as adults.
@@justmemimi7338While anything is possible with this offender, about 60 seems a little on the old side for clambering over a 2 metre fence with a kidnap victim in tow in 1991. Ditto for carrying one of the victims considerable meterage. While some people around that age have great stamina, the sort of crimes that the offender repeatedly carried out suggest someone younger. The ethnicity of the suspect put forward would also be questionable. This doesn’t sound like someone who would match polite profiles, with one of the taskforce suggesting a man of 34-48 years old, and one of the victim’s family suggesting younger that that.
Still police are obliged to follow up leads, even unpromising one.
This is so sad. It breaks my heart.

Umm hello! The killer knew who he was and knew where is family lived. 😳 DON’T you think he wanted to save his other daughters?
@@philhudson...5017Body language is an imprecise “science”, akin to profiling, and linguistics analysis, etc. Coming from Hong Kong, the father’s reaction for the camera was fairly typically stoically male Chinese. He quietly left the restaurant probably because he thought it was a HK style kidnap for ransom. One look at the writing on the car would have dispelled that notion. The HK protocol is this, negotiate with the kidnappers first, if this fails, call the police. Nothing out of the ordinary here.
ive been following true crime cases for more than a decade now and every time a case involves non white people, the theories are always the same: mafia, drug related, they must have done something....

Karmeins mother just broke my heart, her pain….no parent should ever have to feel that. So devastating. God watch over and give this family continued strength.
I would interview the male teachers or men that have access to their addresses that know that they have young girls..or maybe after school activity teacher.
To their credit, police did exactly that. The number of male teachers connected directly to the victims was actually quite small, especially the last 2 who attended a private girls’ college. The notion that it had to be a full time male teacher takes a hit because the 3 July 1990 incident took place on a Tuesday in the middle of the last week of term 2 when virtually ALL Victorian schools were in attendance. As one Melbourne newspaper said back April 2022, none of the 4 crime dates (1987-91) suggests school employment.
Karmein was killed by different person.
I always thought this too.
What evidence is offered for this, especially as there are some 20 m.o. matches with the 1991 to some or all of the other 3 incidents, i.e. walking the victim over considerable meterage (1988, 1990, 1991); moonset used as cover (1987, 1990, 1991); connection to electricity (all); robbery ruse (all); the list goes on.
Just my opinion. We're all entitled to one.
