One of my favorites from the 80s. I also happen to have the same name as the drummer of this band. Rock on! 🤘

Being from Nebraska Folks I have never heard of this band! This whole album kicks ass! Aunt was a sales rep back in Kansas City for a May D&F back in those days and hung out at alotta the night clubs & never mentioned these guys. I guess better late than never. Thanks for the upload here!!! A real ass kicker of an album!
Welcome and thanks for checking this one out! I kind of imagine Vyper started out as a cover band rocking Scorpions and Def Leppard covers at the local dive bars before crafting some originals. The whole record is really catchy and has some serious ear worms. Somehow this avoided me as well until recently. They also released an EP that may be worth checking out. If you have any Nebraska bands to recommend let me know!
Being from in the middle of nowhere out in Central Nebraska, you’ve gotta get into the Omaha Metro-plex or into Lincoln to see alotta bands, and there’s alotta cover bands out there! I used to go see Zwarte’ constantly back in college when they used to play down at the Grove out on West O street in Lincoln not a Nebraska Band, Souix Falls South Dakota Actually. One of their fan favorites was Loco PD off their locally produced album called Bullets had a pretty good fan following down here for alotta years. Met Randle Zwarte many times, one hell of a nice guy. Another band you may wanna look up and I do believe they have some original material is a band outta Lincoln called EZRA, Scott Schlesinger’s band The great Cory Schlesinger who played for Nebraska back on the national championship years older brother, those guys grew up about 20miles east of me in Duncan Nebraska, Harder Heavier metal music those guys crank out, don’t know if you can find any down loads via the internet or not, just missed those guys at a small venue in downtown Lincoln back in December.
From the Metal Archives, a review:
Not Quite a Strike Out - 78%
heavymetalbackwards, May 20th, 2012
Vyper was an American glam metal band fromKansas City, Missouri that released their only full-length record in 1984, Prepared to Strike. Never achieving anywhere near the same level of fame as their L.A. contemporaries like Ratt and Motley Crue, Vyper did share something with the two aforementioned bands. They were much heavier and more metallic-sounding compared to a majority of the 1980s glam metal movement. Actually, Vyper often approaches the heaviness territory of W.A.S.P.and Lizzy Borden, the sorts of glam outfits that were essentially equally intense to most of the straight-up heavy metal at the time.
The album has a crisp, crunchy production with highly melodic vocals that soar over the guitar riffs. Singer Christy Black is atypical for a glam metal singer, avoiding the squeaky and raspy high-pitched vocals that were the signature of groups like Cinderella. He has wide vocal range, with a smoothness to his voice closer to something like Rob Halford from Judas Priest.
Speaking of Judas Priest, the song “Dealer” sounds highly influenced by the faster tracks on albums such as Defenders of the Faith, with highly proud and epic, soaring heavy metal feel. It sounds hardly glam at all, but the glam is more evident in power ballads such as “Nighttime is Wild,” which relies on a dark but magical atmosphere combined with a glam-esque naïveté. A lot of the tracks have a tinge of AOR influence, such as “Cold as Stone,” but a majority of the songs like “I’m Not Waiting” and “She’s Nasty” have the more typical glam metal vibe.
First Strike is highly recommended to fans of heavier glam metal as well as traditional heavy metal.
Good write up and Vyper definitely wears their influences on their sleeves. There is a lot of variation on this album in terms of styles. You hear trad metal, glam, rock, NWOBHM, etc. Some of the lyrics are pretty rough!
Good memories

Fuckin' riff on cold as stone.
Great tune...a lot of these tracks get stuck in your head!!
First song totally rips offs Rock You Like a Hurricane intro 🤣😂🤣 Good shit, might have to have you on w/ Dennis and I on Forgotten Metal Gems to talk about this one ! Nigttime is Wild is essentially Alone Again more or less, but a killer track even if the lyrics are kind lamo !
PS: Little tidbit of info, this album was produced by Eric Grief who became Death's manager in the late 80's until Chucks death and was behind Perseverance Holdings the company that Chucks mom and sister set up to license, market, and sell the Death catalog/merchandising. Eric sadly passed away
I feel like this one would make for great discussion on a Forgotten Metal Gems segment! As a matter fact, the Eric Greif connection was the reason I came across this album. He was a Milwaukee guy and also produced killer albums by Viogression, Acrophet, and Morbid Saint. I was checking out his other producing credits and discovered this one from KC. RIP Griffy!
