Chasing Vertical Episode 7: Level 4 Lockdown

- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- Disclaimer All the climbing in the Dream Sequence was filmed before NZ Level 4 lockdown (before 25.3.2020) and all the climbing in Mt. Somers was filmed during Level 2 lockdown (after 14.5.2020)
With Level 4 Lockdown commencing we just happen to arrive in the "climbing mecca of NZ" Takaka and managed to get a few days of climbing in at Paynes Ford before Level 4 initiated. Unfortunately Level 4 meant no climbing or even leaving your household for more than the essential stores and an hour of exercise. We found this rule out a little late and got a lot of hate for that mistake, but then we just started biding our time next to the beach at the Pohara Top 10 Holiday park, we had to get creative in order to keep busy or be entertained. So why not build a fishing platform? Little did we know that the biggest storm to come through camp while we were there came through just after we built the platform, and there was no trace of the platform or the wood the next morning.
Level 3 showed up eventually so we jumped in the car and headed to Farewell Spit, because level 3 meant we were able to travel around the region. But things became far more interesting when Level 2 came into affect. If we can go climbing again, then we should go somewhere epic and somewhere great for trad climbing. So we headed down south, picked up our friend Shepard, and hiked into the Mt. Somers/Pinnacles Hut climbing area. The introduction to trad climbing came in heavy especially with some staunch, 30 meter cracklines. But you have to start somewhere, right? Even after Mt. Somers, at lower elevations the climbing in the cold and in the short daylight hours has proven to be difficult. So the plan has changed to head up to the North Island where its warmer, and none of us have climbed up there so it should be a good adventure.
we hope you enjoyed the video, hopefully we are able to get back to a regular schedule of bi-weakly releases. And we hope you are still staying safe through the pandemic.
Special thanks to Josiah (Shepard) and his family for the hospitality!

@@MathesonBrown Was watching a video about Appalachia and someone mentions tales of feral "wild men" of Appalacia... So I did a google of Wild Men of Appalachia, and your goofy face is the FIRST image to pop up. I died laughing.
A perfect antidote to lockdown life in the UK. As others have said, good to have you back. Enjoy & stay safe 👍🏻
Thanks a bunch for that, hopefully everyone can get back to what they love doing real soon. Cheers will do :)
Damn I’m proud of you three.
Aw thanks Mak
That was one impressive fishing platform man! Shame about the storm. Great to see you keeping busy & finding ways to stay sane in lockdown- pretty great to be marooned near a beach at least. Good luck out there now you're back on the rocks & have a blast climbing in the North Island.
Thanks man, and yea we were pretty happy with it aye, and yea we are going climbing today, i'm very excited
Glad to see another video posted! Keep working hard man!
Thanks i'm glad you liked it dude, and for sure, will do
I was wondering if New Zealand had fallen off the edge of the earth! I guess not, glad to see you active again! Some video editor sure had a lot of free time on their hands. Over in the most awesome country on earth (according to our Dear Leader) I'm still locked out of the wilderness I long to be in. Enjoy your freedom. Excelsior!
Thanks man that's really nice, and yea it feels good to be able to put some more videos up again. Sorry to hear you cant go out into the wilderness at the moment, but hopefully you will be allowed to soon. Good luck over there man
Great to see you back! Amazing video!

Great video
Glad you enjoyed it man
Good to see you. Has the injury healed? Your stores look like ours in Eastern Connecticut(1/2 empty). A fun and interesting video. Good music. Hard to believe that its already two years since I started following you. Is the wohan virus going to mess up CA being open? Good Luck, Rick
Good to hear from you too. Yea my shoulder is doing pretty well now so that's great. I am going to find out if I can get a visa for America tomorrow so fingers crossed.
@@MathesonBrown Good Luck but, you really may not want to come here this year. There are some very strange things going on with the ccp virus(people are recovering from it but then dying several weeks later). California being very prochina is not actting rationally, they are not stopping the spread amongst the poor sections of the cities. I hope that it all works out for you. Rick
@@richardross7219 Hmm that is strange, I hope it gets better very soon for everyones sake
Mate more people need to see and follow this journey! Find a way to promote yourself 🤷🏼♂️
Thanks so much for your comment man thats really nice.
Yea I wish I knew how to do it, i'm hoping if i put out enough good videos eventually more people will watch it.
