  • Welcome to another episode of The Biannual Travellers.
In this video, we will be sharing the full journey of our experience from Singapore to KL Sentral via train.
The travel time onboard the KTM is roughly 4 hours and 45mins from JB Sentral to Gemas, and 2 hours 30mins onboard the ETS train from Gemas to KL Sentral.
Both trains have onboard facilities such as washrooms and Cafes that sells food and beverages, train coaches are air conditioned as well.

Many many moons ago, I took the direct train from KL, the old main terminal, to Singapore, at the old Tanjong Pagar station. It was an overnight train. Back the same way later that day, and had a slight delay at TP because there was filming that day. It was quicker and less hassle, using one single regular train.

Miss the direct route of the train from Tanjong pagar to KL. Hopefully, the ETS line from JB to KL will be up soon.

with the completion of the southern double-tracking project from Gemas to JB, it will be more convenient and faster to take the train between Singapore and not only KL but the rest of Malaysia, particularly along the west coast of the peninsula to Padang Besar. we can still take the shuttle train from Woodlands until the completion of the new RTS line to Woodlands North directly connecting with the Thomson-East Coast MRT line.

Thank you so much for the video! Wanted to ask, are there any kopitiams around Gemas station where I can have a heavy meal? If no, then would you recommend we bring along a lunch meal onboard the train from JB since the journey starts at 8.30am?

Hi, there is a kopitiam at the old station beside the newer station, there is also a family mart and a KFC outlet nearby as well.

Some years ago I travelled from Singapore to Kaula Lumpur by bus and it was the worst experience for me. Most of the personnel at Malaysian immigration offices were rude and criminal minded. I had been warned about them.

Where are the customs and immigration handled?

    • @thebiannualtravellers

From SG to JB, both immigration are handed on the singapore side. There is a dedicated customs hall for train after the ticket check.

0:23 is the Woodlands KTM ticket office and railway station. Despite the simple layout but it is the same as other KTM stations - it is managed by a station master (actually 2 masters but one standby) with two clerks as well as two porters. Besides Shuttle Tebrau tickets, you can also buy ETS tickets as well as Ekspres Selatan and Ekspres Rakyat Timuran tickets at Woodlands KTM station also.
