Technique of building up a clown act by sticking with a problem. Drew Richardson's blog about fooling also covers this and more. Visit: www.thinkfoolis...
Thanks for that tip Greg. Drew and I are essentially talking about the same thing, but his blog goes into far more detail. For those interested the blog is well worth the visit. I have put a link to it in the video description above.
ahhh I see now! that’s were the comedy and creativity comes in! constantly coming up with ridiculous ways in which it doesn’t work, while acting genuine and clueless! what a fun routine, laughed a lot :)
Great Idea's. I'm sure I'll include my own version of this in one of Cookie & Freddie's shows soon. I love working with chairs, but it is easy to get tangled up more than intended! I think I will do it with a cream pie, and Cookie will of course offer to help by putting it in my face! Thanks again!
Thank you soooo much for this video. I am a caricature artist here in Winnipeg , Manitoba Canada. In the summer time I travel with an entertainment caravan of games and rides. Ferris wheel and other rides and so on. I am using costumes (customized) to act a bit of a chararcter too, so this video was a real delight for further growth into my entertainment gig. Thank you and I look forward to watching more! This is genius on your part explaining things, I do really appreciate your efforts here.
Je ne suis pas regarde pour plus, mais ce vidéo est trés bien! J'adore tu en comparison á mon professeur. Tu fais génial vidéos et avoit le bien facile!
I'm a magician /clown but I tend to go towards the creepy side of clowning, do you have any references I can look at for knife juggling and maybe more dangerous type stunts
Yes, clowning can cover so many different styles. Even some of those early circus clowns could be pretty brutal - in Felini's fantastic film 'I Clowns' there is a great bit where one of the clown's puts an axe into the head of another. I'm sure you can find some other dangerous stunts like this on youtube. Have you thought of trying the bowling ball juggling routine which ends with the juggler throwing one of the balls up and bouncing it on his/her head?
Ok, so the clown sticks with the problem? So say the clown wants a balloon and doesn’t want to lose it, so we as people normally tie it to our finger, but the clown let’s go thinking that it will fall to the ground, it floats away, making another problem of grabbing it, grabs it, then let’s go again. Is that how it works or more sofisticated?
That's a pretty good summary of how it works. If you wanted to stick further with the problem and develop an act further, the challenge would be to discover different ways of grabbing the balloon and different reasons for letting it go. And finally the pay off - how will it end? Will the balloon burst?
I'm staying with a problem all the time I'm not a clown though)) but probably I should?)) thanks for this video, now I understand a power that make everyday things easier)
(True Opinion) I did several courses of clown and in nearly all, the main objective of the clown is the tragedy. To get take up, until highest in a energy level. And the needs of the clown are basics, (eat, sleep, run, play, teach, cook,...) The clown birth when he cannot do that he want by all that problems. I haven't seem problems and the need clear. I saw someone playing with a chair and with a cake in the hand not with real problems to sit and eat the cake. I wait that my opinion not disturb
Sehr grundlegend und richtig, "bleibe beim Problem". Danke. Dafür war der erste Schritt für das Öffnen des Stuhls dann sogar zu schnell. So schnell erkennt der Clown das nicht. Sorry...
It's very creative. From an artistic point of view I like it very much. Unfortunately I've become too scalded (maybe it's the wrong word?) to find it funny.
Yes, I guess so - although I would prefer to call it clowning. Were Chaplin and Buster Keaton mimes or clowns? I think clowning can cover a lot of skills - mime, magic, juggling, slapstick.
Thanks for posting this! I'm just starting out as a clown and this was a wonderful way to show how the clown thinks
The most useful and to-the-point clowning tutorial I've seen on UA-cam - thanks a lot, sir. XXXXXXX
So simple and so brilliant. Thank you Mr. Richardson.
Glad you liked it and thanks for the positive feedback

I liked the act even better with the monologue voiced over. "My leg again? ...But the cakes still good, eh?"
If I went with this performance, I probably would have sneezed at the end and accidentally drop the cake. Lol
Nice video, I'm just getting into clowning as I want to use it to compliment my stand up and this video has given me some food for thought. Thanks!!

Glad you laughed! Good luck with your clowning.

Thanks for outlining the fundamental things to know as a clown
Feels like that episode of king of the hill where bobby keeps laughing at the number three and having to explain his jokes lol.
beautiful work
Thank you
I was chuckling to myself from the start, but when you lay on the chair and started swimming i laughed very hard. Great job!
Thanks for sharing this. I enjoyed it and I learned a lot. Best regards, from the bottom of the heart of my little clown.
I'm so glad that it was helpful. Happy fooling and good luck with your clowning.

How the time machine coming along?
Thank you so much Mr for sharing your beautiful training. It will help me a lot in my clown moving body with a chair.
It's a great video for someone learning about clown, wonderful job+
Well, thank you for your kind comment.
This reminds me of Puddles pushing his chair from one end of the stage to the other with all his might for like 5 minutes xD

Hi ! Fantastic video! How can I contact you privately? Thank you!
Where has this vid gone 😔
The video is still there! Maybe a problem with youtube blocking it in some countries due to music content.
Thank you
Superb!
Thank you!
Thanks! Very helpful.
Very nice! Thank you!
Molly Noodle Thanks for your kind comment and good luck with your clowning!

Nice...to. Seek.
He needs to sit down and eat
I see the problem very clearly. He wants to sit on his chair and enjoy his cake. He can't do that. And that's a problem.

In order to not see the obvious you have to see what is not obvious

Clown çalışması icin iyi bir örnek oldu.

Instead of a chair, one could use a Tiger.
Absolutely - do send me a link to your video when you do the tiger act!
5:37 nooooo donde te sentaste !!!!!
Wish I knew this meant - I've figured out its to do with sitting on (or maybe not on) a cake! So, probably relevant. Thanks for the feedback!
Lets feel....y es and nows. Hows. And clowns at noses....reds.......
Drunk again, David?
Isn't this technically just miming though?
Yes, I guess so - although I would prefer to call it clowning. Were Chaplin and Buster Keaton mimes or clowns? I think clowning can cover a lot of skills - mime, magic, juggling, slapstick.
I don't think mimes have props
Beware of definitions . It is theatre , one uses skills to do the show.
Nice tutorial - thank you. :)
I Wanna Practice be a "Ronald McDonald!"
Check out my own clown stage act......
