Yeah, that must be brutal! (And scary for the guy in the back seat). The brakes on a normal bike can only just handle the torture of the race descend, so it must be a real struggle on a tandem.
Your skill level has to be on the high side if you want to make it to one of the mass starts (if you qualify bad, you won’t get a mass start). So at every bikepark black line, you should be able to ride down without stopping (and with a big smile). If you want to make it into the fastest starting field, your technique has got to be really good, and you need a shit load of stamina! A $2000 bike will get you down if you ride the race pretty slow (1:15+ hours). But if you want to race with the top guys (under 1 hour), you’ll need a $4000+ bike.

The last 4 years during the Mega I have destroyed: 3 rear dampers, 1 fork , 3 wheel sets, 2 brake sets, 1 phone, and 1 saddle. So if you really want to race, your bike needs to be solid and high spec. But if you ride it slow (in the affinity race) a normal enduro bike should be just fine. In the 2018 version the American dude is on a €2000 rental bike. That bike just couldn’t cope with the speed that he was riding, and the poor thing wat totalled after his race run.

The Trailrups 👍🏻 ja het is echt bucket list materiaal!! Maar ik kan je wel aanraden een boel te trainen, en een goeie enduro bak te kopen. (Op een trail fiets moet je techniek nog beter zijn). Inschrijven en meedoen is heel makkelijk. Maar om de voorste startvakken te halen moet je toch wel echt aan het werk! Als je heel slecht kwalificeert moet je helemaal achteraan starten zonder massa start, en dat is echt niet de moeite (heb ik al 2x mee gemaakt door pech). Een goede test is b.v. De blackline op winterberg 6x achter elkaar rijden. Als je afdalingen onder de 3 minuten blijven, ga je plezier hebben bij de Mega. Anders kan je beter nog even door trainen.

Ik zou hem pas gaan doen als je: een goede fiets hebt, een prima conditie, en je kan met 2 vingers in je neus alle zwarte (bikepark) techtrails rijden. Anders word het een hele vervelende ervaring (ik ben 5x geweest met een clubje, wat heeft geresulteerd in 4 ziekenhuis opnames voor iemand van de groep). computerbob06 I don’t know what place they finished. But at that point where I filmed them, they where about place 50 of 80 in the e-bike class. There is not a specific racing class for hardtails, becouse you hardly see any. Maybe in 5 of the 1500 riders try it on a hardtail (becouse it’s way to brutal if you ask me 🙈). Racing a riged bike here would be absolute hell! My arms would fall off after 10 minutes I think. Maybe some pro guys would make it, but at a realy slow pace.
