ah, thank you so much. Very kind of you to say. Love Bob Ross! I'd really like to produce more content, when time allows. I created these videos during the early days of lockdown when I was unemployed.
Thank you so much for this excellent done practice tutorial. The only one I found coming straight down to the action, well explained, concentrated on the main point, no endless blabla, just showing how to do it. My weak point was always a proper G, never reached a satisfying result. Now I see some light shimmering at the end of this endless tunnel.🙂
I was completely new to any type of writing style or anything and I hardly knew anything about writing and heard this writing style is really hard so i saw this video and immediately loved it it was really easy i only needed 1 hour to learn everything and write confidently my mother was so shocked when I showed this to her how good my writing got thank you
Wow, thank you for sharing your experience and great to hear the video was easy to follow. Wonderful that you're seeing improvements so quickly. Keep at it!
Thank you for your positive feedback, Gloria. Wonderful to hear that your calligraphy practice is helpful in maintaining or regaining fine motor-skills.
Your awesome, Great job honestly top tier art tutorial. If calligraphy was as popular as certain topics you'd be a you tube star. You got my complete admiration and respect.
Laura, You have really got it going on. You really rock!! Your the first professor that really explains every movement which really builds a lot of Confidence. Many rush through the process leaving the student confused. I really feel I will have much more confidence. I noticed your nib is Always so clean and shinny. Is that a new nib? what nib is that, it’s gorgeous.? The ink is dark and very gorgeously beautiful as is your work product. Thanks , Bo
Many thanks for your positive feedback, Bob. I have to thank the hundreds of students I've taught over the years, for their great questions and comments, many of which I address in this video. I appreciate you mentioning the clean nib. It wasn't that new - had a few hours on it - but I do clean it often! A clean nib letters so much better than one with dried ink/watercolor/gouache on it. My method is to wipe the nib first with a cloth or paper towel, dip into water and then wipe again. I do this every few minutes - so worth it. Best wishes on your calligraphy work!
What an amazing video I am so going to do your lessons along with Eleanor Winters book. I often find myself changing the speed to 50% bEcause most UA-camrs make the strikes really fast. You are the best. Thank you very much. You got a new subscriber here.

Hello madam, i from india,l love calligraphy. But I can't. I watch ur video,ur calligraphy explaining very neat and clean. I understood very well. Than u.🥰
Thank you! Great to hear it's helpful. I have links in the description above to my copperplate workbook. There's little instructional text in the workbook. It's mainly practice sheets to letter over light grey lettering to help get the strokes in one's muscle memory.
hello! thank you for such a helpful video on copperplate. I've noticed that your nib is slightly turning towards the right while you are writing, is that so? do you think you will be able to make a flourishing video?
Good observation! Yes, I sometimes do this unless the nib is getting old and fussy and then I have to make sure the tines of the nib are pressing down evenly. I've taught hundreds of students in person and I would recommend to beginners to not angle left or right but to make sure the nib tines split open evenly (test this by pressing down on a clean nib). Apologies for my delayed reply.
Thank you! In this video I’m using a wooden oblique pen holder that was made by Master Penman Michael Sull and you can reach him at Spencerian.com - Happy lettering!
I do have a question is copperplate more about the slant of the letter of is their a specific alphabet that is considered copperplate. In modern brush calligraphy the basic 8 or so strokes are used to create letter/ words. They use the same strokes in copperplate, however some are different is that an individual choice or a set rule? Thank you
Modern calligraphy lettered with a brush is loosely based on copperplate calligraphy, which was developed in 17th century England; and originally called English Roundhand; and later Engrosser's Script in late 19th century USA. For a more in depth study of copperplate I recommend Eleanor Winter's Mastering Copperplate and also consider your closest Calligraphy Guild. You can find a list here: www.societyofscribes.org/links

Oblique pen holders are typically used for copperplate calligraphy. Some left-handed calligraphers will use a straight pen holder. Pointed pen nibs like Hunt 101 or Nikko G are used for copperplate. You can find many calligraphy tools at Paper and Ink Arts and John Neal Booksellers but links in the description area of this video (click 'show more'). Good luck!
It's Hewlett Packard's premium laser paper, 98 brightness, 32lb. I've found it to hold every ink and gouache that I've tried nicely. A student of mine said that generic laser paper worked well for them too.
I've worked with several left-handed students and I notice most do well with a straight pen holder instead of an oblique one and also rotating your paper 45 to 90 degrees (bottom of the paper is to your left and top is to your right). Hope that makes sense. Pls check out Master Penman John DeCollibus - an outstanding left-handed calligrapher.
I used Yasutomo sumi ink. Please check out the supply list in the description section - usually collapsed and not visible; click on 'more'. Thanks for asking!🪴
