NK is extreme dictatorship and cult, so living in more or less free country is not taking " for granted ". It's normal as it should be, and it always can be better. NK is an exception, and we as Americans are guilty boycotting NK people and not allowing anyone to trade with them. In my opinion, we would destroy dictatorship much faster by allowing people to take a glimpse into better life than keeping them starving because we want pressure NK dictator.

a critiscm for your videos/tip, its hard to hear when you sit so far away from your cameras microphone. an external one will go along way to improve the video. you dont need those super expensive proffesional mics, a clip mic is more than enough. i once heard this very true statement "people will forgive bad video quality if the audio quality is good" and its very true. theres nothing wrong with the video quality as im sure you use good cameras but the audio volume is very low and turning up the volume will make everything else loud as hell. I noticed the same "issue" in your other videos were you sit far away from the camera. other than that youre doing awesome work and i love hearing about NK

The class system in North Korea seems appallingly stark. It reminds me how thankful I am to live in the U.S., where yes there are different wealth classes, yet not as dire as North Korea.
I am proud of you. I learned so much about North Korea. We Americans are so privilege to have all those basic needs. Why so many complaint about their lives while some suffer everyday? I cannot understand. I am so lucky to have freedom.
I feel the same about Michelin Star restaurants. You pay a fortune for tiny portions of pretentious food. I can just imagine your sweet mother's reaction to the experience.
Omg! First of all you are one of the most brave people I've seen. I love that you do... so we can understand more of the simple yet heart wrenching things you had to endure... so thank for for being so brave and honest. As for this video, I understand when you say "food is food" because at times i was starving as well and needed to convince myself that "food is food" and it will keep us alive. You are right, Yeonmi. The foods you named aren't actually bad. They aren't as healthy as fresh unprocessed food, but they are most definitely better than no food at all.. We Westerners are spoiled & don't appreciate what we have.

These videos are really helping change my perspective. Those of us who live in rich countries don't realize how rich we are for affording to buy all kind of food and we don't realize about how much waste we do with our unhealthy eating lifestyle. I remember you saying in a previous video that you didn't know what the shopping carts were for which is shocking. When we hear about waste we usually think at rich people who take a bite of a food and throws everything or who go to super expensive restaurants. We don't realize that even ourselves, average Joe, waste a lot of food by being so picky or eating so, so much. I remember seeing a show where it was saying that the money NASA receives would stop world starvation. Yet there are still people who are starving. It's really, really shocking how blind we are about the needs of those around us.
My eyes rolled over a hundred fold when someone said she did not believe north koreans were not malnourished and starving ... she pointed out just look at those ‘big’ stomachs
In one of the most advanced stages of starvation, the ligaments holding the intestines flat against the rest of the body dissolve and the guts fall forward.
Wow! Yes, noodles in America are definitely not heathy. BUT when I lived in Honolulu the noodles at the restaurants were so different and tasted differently. With such a high population of Asians I felt like I was in Asia. A tropical Hawaiian Asia lol.

Is the black market in North Korea different from the black market in the western countries? I am asking because she speaks of the black market in North Korea as if it is a place were people go shopping and I am a bit confused.
It's the same (except that no other places to shop in North Korea, unless you're elite), in theory it's illegal but the government allows it in practice at least some of the time because otherwise there'd be so much more starvation.

Hey, wie ist die Situation in HK. Gibts da immernoch Korruption ?
"tHiS hAnD pIcKeD rAdIsH" lol that got me cracking up.
They risked their lives to escape NK where they had to eat food grown in their own yard to end up in America and end up in a super fancy restuarant - eating food picked outside. That really was very funny. Delightful video.
What's funny about that?
It's the same in the UK sometimes. We have ALWAYS grown our own organic vegetables and fruits made out own bread handmade our own preserves etc. I grew up in this way-Now these foods that are commonplace to us are very expensive in cities. Duuuuuh! BUT ANY food in NK was so scarce. Poor souls. No wonder adults never reach full growth potential. Such skeletal tiny people. So tragic
*I just wanna say that im very happy for how much ur channel has grown in the last months. Everyone needs to hear what this brave woman has to say* 👏👏👏👏💕💕💕
Love your icon
Really glad you escaped and survived, it's great to have you to educate us.
i love you and your bravery for standing up for what’s right. so much injustice in this world and you came from a hole in the dark and somehow manage to be a shining angel. YOU ARE AMAZING!!! 🤍
I was stationed in Korea for a year. I enjoyed my time there but seeing what was happening to the people in North Korea made me sick to my stomach. My offer still stands. You say the word and I will make you a feast. Thank you for all you do.
I love these videos. I can't believe how many videos Miss Park is uploading lately. Incredible!
I grew up in LA but my parents were addicts we never had money for food or anything. I grew up a better half of my life starving just like you so even here in the states people can be around things that is available to them but not ever able to try it or taste it. That's a story like many others have. So I can relate to you....
This video reminds me of the stories my parents raised in communist Poland would tell me, e.g. eating oranges only one time in a year, for Christmas
I grow in the Soviet Union, we had mandarines only for New Year's dinner, and during the winter we ate most canned fruits/ vegetables, no fresh.
I’m from Romania and I hear those stories all the time. I just heard the one with the oranges today
@@Storm-ib7uz I crossed Romania through by train in 1986 and it was very poor country, hungry kids were begging for food and money. Heartbreaking.
@@lucyohio3005 unfortunately that was the reality back then. I didn’t live in that period of time, but I heard stories. The communism fell and now things are better and will continue to improve. It’s not perfect now, but better.
Bananas in Soviet Russia in new year
Yeonmi Park you have one of my favorite youtube channels. So informative!
I wish it was possible to like "adopt" a North Korean family and send them things like food and other basic needs. Those things in America are soooo cheap! Like it would be nothing for me to go to the store right now and get everything on this list and mail it to a North Korean family.
The best thing to do is to retain those generous feelings and use them to donate to a charity food bank in the U S to use in their next giveaway. Lots of people in the U S are requesting services from a food bank for the first time.
@@gwillis01 good point
If it were even POSSIBLE to send. It would cost you 5x as much to mail it. Unless you find a courier going to that country. Which am sure NK does not. So sad!
@@gwillis01 no american is starving to death because they cant afford food. quite the opposite in fact. if an arduous march happened here nobody would die and wed all get healthier lmao
@@93corollausa94 Apparently you have not been to a lower class poverty stricken neighborhood in America. I am a starving American.
Thanks for your sharing and explanations of daily life in NK So glad you are here in USA and enlightening we YT peeps. Take care and be well. 💐❤️
This breaks my heart especially when I think of my leftovers that goes bad and just ends up in the garbage
LBJ, one of the US presidents in the 1960s, supposedly said that if he wanted facts about a country he would ask the CIA but if he wanted to know what was happening on the street in a country and what the people believed and talked about he asked CocaCola.
Is there something that is affordable in North Korea and expensive in the rest of the world? For example is it easier to get a house or land
She has a video where she talks about this. I'm pretty sure you cannot own land or houses in North Korea, you pay for the right to occupy the space and that is it.
Check out SAO Documentary, theyve uploaded plenty of updated vids with interviews with their North Korean friends to answer your questions. Yeonmi Park fled North Korea when she was 8yo, and shes from a rural northern province. Waste of time asking her
@@ameliakayart4885 Its all state owned but u can pass over "ownership" of old apartments. My friend in SInuiju, North Korea just reckons its up to $100,000 for a top-notch apartment in Pyongyang
@@Steveinthailand I thought she was 13 when she fled, but I get your point. People have different experiences depending on where they were from in North Korea.

Crazy how much stuff us Americans take for granted
NK is extreme dictatorship and cult, so living in more or less free country is not taking " for granted ". It's normal as it should be, and it always can be better. NK is an exception, and we as Americans are guilty boycotting NK people and not allowing anyone to trade with them.
In my opinion, we would destroy dictatorship much faster by allowing people to take a glimpse into better life than keeping them starving because we want pressure NK dictator.
Theres nothing wrong with canned fish or canned beans, perfectly fine stuff.
I love sardines and beans lol
Exactly!
Can be good, but the problem with processed foods is how much sodium or other things they add.
You're right. But I imagine they would be eating it very very often. Which isn't so fine.
That's what I think too, John!
Thank you Yeonmi! I enjoy your videos very much!
Finally! Caught you right after you uploaded! I’m in awe of you, I’m so happy for you. You make me want to do more for other people! You are one of the strongest people i have ever seen!!
Thank you for sharing your stories. You have lived quite the life. This is amazing, and educational. Please don’t ever stop
“But I like the dog sausage “ 🥺🥺 WE NEED TO PROTECT YOU AT ALL COSTS
I love everything you do and work for, Yeonmi! You're an inspiration to me every day!
Hi Yeonmi! Thank you so much for educating and informing us on NK culture as always. It's so sad how NK oppresses it's people so badly with hunger to the point that even the most unique piece of food is considered such a high delicacy. Food should never be looked that way. It should always be looked at as a basic means to survival. As always shine bright and thank you so much!
This channel is honestly one of the most eye opening on UA-cam. It should be required for everyone to watch a few of these videos.
Thank you so much for your videos, Yeonmi ! Let’s watch your new video, I wish you all the best ! Stay safe ! 💖❤️
Wow! I'm obsessed with your content and country OmG I could never imagine living like that it makes me truly appreciate living in the US and growing up in Jamaica
I'm so glad you're here and you are able to enjoy life love that you took your mom out to dinner
So happy for you Yeonmi, good to see you spreading the word
What traditional Korean foods do you like to have now that you've moved to the U.S? Do you shop at Korean grocery stores often? Or do you prefer more American foods?
Every story I heard from you, reminds me how blessed I am for everyday life blessings. You makes us here more grateful for every little thing we have in life. Thank you, Yeonmi.
I’m so glad you got away from there!
I just wanted to say how much I love your videos! You are so inspiring, and I believe making everyone who watches your videos appreciate their lives and things we take for granted so much more than we did before. All the best from Estonia! 💗
Excellent content every time 👍👍
a critiscm for your videos/tip, its hard to hear when you sit so far away from your cameras microphone.
an external one will go along way to improve the video. you dont need those super expensive proffesional mics, a clip mic is more than enough.
i once heard this very true statement "people will forgive bad video quality if the audio quality is good" and its very true.
theres nothing wrong with the video quality as im sure you use good cameras but the audio volume is very low and turning up the volume will make everything else loud as hell.
I noticed the same "issue" in your other videos were you sit far away from the camera.
other than that youre doing awesome work and i love hearing about NK
One of the most interesting channels o YT! Greets from Paris
I know this message might get lost ... But the whole world is so proud of you, Yeonmi.
Any compassionate, intelligent human being is proud of you.
I LOVE seeing and hearing you talk so freely. Please keep making the world learn.
You are so strong for successfully escaping, you're a legend. Never forget that I am so proud of you.
I love your videos they're entertaining & informative, keep up the good work! 🍀👍
If there's one good thing lockdown brought, alot of good youtubers are uploading more frequently, beats being bored at home all day
Another amazing video! Thank you again for sharing!
The class system in North Korea seems appallingly stark. It reminds me how thankful I am to live in the U.S., where yes there are different wealth classes, yet not as dire as North Korea.
Your book was so touching it made me cry❤️. So happy you are well and free!
Thank you so much for educating us ❤️
Love from Peru ❤️
I am proud of you. I learned so much about North Korea. We Americans are so privilege to have all those basic needs. Why so many complaint about their lives while some suffer everyday? I cannot understand. I am so lucky to have freedom.
These videos are AMAZING! I'm talking about North Korea waaaay too much these days.....
Hi Marian: Heres a nice up-to-date video about Pyongyang: ua-cam.com/video/Zc1WN6RkdjQ/v-deo.html
Yeonmi your videos are always fascinating and oh so sobering . Please keep going with them
I feel the same about Michelin Star restaurants. You pay a fortune for tiny portions of pretentious food. I can just imagine your sweet mother's reaction to the experience.
Thank You for teaching me so! Cant wait for the next video! I Love learning!
Happy deepavali yeonmi park💥💥
Just purchased the your book Yeonmi!!!! So excited to read!!!!!!!!
You're an inspiration Yeonmi! Thank you! 😊
Omg! First of all you are one of the most brave people I've seen. I've personally met North Korean defectors and they all have been absolutely paranoid to share their stories, and would never broadcast their experiences like you do. I love that you do... so we can understand more of the simple yet heart wrenching things you had to endure... so thank for for being so brave and honest. As for this video, I understand when you say "food is food" because at times i was starving as well and needed to convince myself that "food is food" and it will keep us alive. If you grew and ate your own produce, that means you are healthier than the richest of the rich. Like you said its something that most people wish they did instead of buying instant ramen, processed cookies and spam (although I love all those things lol) anyway thank you for sharing this! Its very enlightening.
Hand-picked vegan food grown without chemicals, locally sourced. Top-dollar stuff in the West; seems like everyone wants what they can’t get!
They’re starving, it’s not about being picky.
You almost got me again Yeonmi.. I rarely get through one of your videos without crying.. when you said you took your mom to the restaurant because you wanted her to experience that kind of exclusive restaurant at least once in her life.. geesh. You got me again! As always love your vids and thank you for sharing your story.
Dog food won't hurt you. One time my uncles came over and ate dog jerkey thinking it was regular jerkey. They finished the package before my dad came back in the room...so yeah,. I appreciate this video because it shows that dogs in America eat better and we need to stop the insanity of N. Korea regime. 💙
your uncle ate dog jerky? that poor dog sorry, that was my attempt at humor
Hello Yeonmi, I just finished reading your book. It was a great to learn about your life and very sad. Hope you are doing great now.

Thank you for this video. I have a friend that I talk to about your videos, i hope she will be one of your Patreons.
Yeonmi I can’t get enough of your videos
They’ve really opened my eyes
Praying North Korea can one day be free ❤️
Impressed by your work ethic and your passion. The way you’re able to compare and contrast the differences and the perspectives of the two cultures of North Korea and the US is powerful. You’ve lived it. Survived it. You’re thriving now and it is evident. The best revenge of all against all those who tried to keep you down and abused you along the journey to freedom. God bless you.
You are right, Yeonmi. The foods you named aren't actually bad. They aren't as healthy as fresh unprocessed food, but they are most definitely better than no food at all.. We Westerners are spoiled & don't appreciate what we have.
I've been binge watching your channel for two days. This is so interesting. As a black man in America i let go of the victim mentality a long time ago. I think more AMERICANS need to hear your story.
I would love to learn about what housing in NK is like for poor, middle class, and the elite. Eg. Do the Elite housing in NK have similar luxury to Elite housing in the West or China? Do the Elite live in mansions in NK? Maybe you can do a topic on this one day?
I literally wait everyday for your video , love from India ❤️❤️ you are so inspiring
Wow! Yes, noodles in America are definitely not heathy. BUT when I lived in Honolulu the noodles at the restaurants were so different and tasted differently. With such a high population of Asians I felt like I was in Asia. A tropical Hawaiian Asia lol.
Love your uploads Greetings from Malta Europe
I pray and hope that all people from North Korea will be released and free from there. They are also humans and they deserve to enjoy life. Thank you for telling this to the world Ms. Park 🙏💕 keep safe!
I love how much I'm getting informed by your channel
Would you ever do a couple video? Like a husband-wife q&a? I think it'll be veryy interesting!
So tbe regime can go after him? Bad idea.
Is she married? So, is the husband also from NK?
I will absolutely buy your book; 'Voice of North Korea' ! Your interviews, talks, sharing of the plight of the North Korean people are what the entire world needs to hear. You are so very good at explaining and so very honest and believable! Please continue your quest to help them! I think you, yourself are actually their best chance at salvation for sure! You have a great capacity and ability for it! Also your understanding/explanations of 'communism/capitalism are so simple and concise ..the best I've ever heard! Thank you for your testimony! Thank you for sharing! You are the most wonderful!
I am so happy I found your channel! So fascinating! You are a beautiful person!
I love your videos
Just finished reading your book about your journey in order to live, very interesting and amazing, I would not have imagined a young life could be like that, glad you are now so succesfull in communicating this to whole world...
Love the way you say "channel"
Dear Yeonmi, you are such an inspiration for all of us, all these ''inspiring celebrities'' that people know about and follow can go hide away as someone like you is TRULY INSPIRING and a TRUE role model for us all. You made me realise what a spoiled kid I am and just how much I take for granted. You change lives even if you don't know it, I am so grateful to have found your channel
