- Terraria 1.4.4 added a secret pet (a block of dirt), which may actually be the rarest item in the game now in terms of drop rate. Let's see just how rare it is, and then test how long it takes to find it...

The probability stuff is a little messed up because I forgot to account for the finite amount of blocks in the calculation. Your odds of finding one increase with every block you break, unlike most drop rates (like the living hat), but it is still ~1 in 100,000+ when you're starting out.
Here are some updated stats:
- To have a 90% chance of getting the block with 300,000 blocks, you would only need to break about 53-54% of the blocks, or about 160,000 of them.
- The chance to get it as early as we did on the first attempt was about 12.1%, not 11.8%
- The second attempt was about 68% not 62%.
So not a massive difference at these points, but definitely worth noting, and it would be a larger and larger difference as you continue to get less and less lucky.

@@Nx042 With a void bag/money trough, it can be a nice way to avoid picking up anything you don't want while mining, and just focus on the stuff you do when the time comes!

Ah yes, the classic "When you need it, you never find it. But when you don't need it, you find it immediately" kind of luck.

true, i farmed a lot of chaos elementals to get my rod of discord during my playthrough, didn't got it. Then one day when i had done all the exploration i needed in my world and was going to finish the game, i went to do a fishing quest in the underground hallow and one of my minions killed a chaos elemental that droped the rod of discord
You remove the dirt as you search for the block. Mining 230,000 out of 300,000 actually gives a probability of 98.7% of getting at least 1 of the 3 dirtiest blocks.
To have a 90% chance of getting it you only need to mine about 160,600 dirt blocks.
This type of probably distribution is called hypergeometric if you want to find a calculator for it

@@naryosh_ basically there are two main types of what's called discrete distribution. One is binomial, that is where the factors are replaced. Flipping a coin is the best example, you don't remove a side of the coin so it's binomial. Hypergeometric is similar but it factors in removing factors, cards are easy to use as an example. If a draw a card to get a ace the % of drawing a ace changes because I've removed a card, the more notable change would be drawing a second ace once I have one.
Hopefully that's easy enough to follow. For the example of this video, every dirt block removed changes the odds of finding the pet, leading to an actual lower average amount needed to find it.

Collecting all pets in terraria also requires for you to fight in on master mode, because there are several master-mode exclusive pets.

It also requires buying the physical edition of the game, as the one and only addition in it is a pet bunny.

i got this pretty early-on in my most recent character, i didn't know it was so rare or that it was so recently introduced. i just kept him around because i thought it was cooler to have a little dirt lump walking after you than a dragon or whatever. it seems like a lot of people have gotten it by accident, way way more than have gotten the slime staff.
I think a lot of people start ignoring slimes for the most part pretty early on in their playthrough but the digging never stops.

I've got one, but the chest pet for permanent piggy bank next to me is just too good. get a few gold and autostack to chest. super useful for master mode by comparison to anything else
I will say it is one of the more cooler pets to flex I guess trust I got it for just base renovations and got it and now it is the most rarest pet and I have it
@@darknessxoverlord Money Trough is still a great alternative. It does take an inventory slot and you have to manually summon it, but in turn I can have a cute Lil' Harpy pet following me around instead.

I recently happened upon one of these while molecarting tunnels throughout my Get Fixed Boi world in prep for hardmode (helps finding the hollow, and hard ores before clorophyte gets in my way). just a lone dirt block in a pile of mud was admittedly rather conspicuous
This leads to a new question: do the blocks generate in the same place every time for a secret seed or is it random regardless?

It is *not* that bad at all, 100 ingame days sounds reasonable assuming you beat the game as fast as possible and then move on to the pet grinding. Though, if you wanna do this in a single world considering all the required Master Mode pets.. yeah, I dunno. 500-1000 seems fair lol
365 ingame days, maybe 730 if you're generous, like the stardew challenge's 2 year timer
I think that the skeleton key from the dungeon guardian alone would require several days, since it would have to be done in master mode. I don't know how long exactly, but that would have to be factored in.
Me, peacefully building a 2 by 2 hellevator and found that by pure accident and just thought: huh! That’s a nice pet. Without knowing how rare it is actually
You know what's funny? I decided to make a world to search for one of these and on my first world, I found one almost immediately after maybe half a minute of using the celebration mk 2 just a bit to the left of spawn. I didn't write down the seed and I haven't found the exact block yet but I'll get back to you guys later when I remember to check.
Someone needs to do a seed search to try to find a seed where the dirtiest dirt is the block precisely at spawn (this begs the question of if the dirtiest dirt can grow grass on it).

It's randomized with each world as in it's not the same everytime so you can't just write down the seed sadly

First, I want to say that I love your videos! Usually your probability calculations for these rare drops are correct, because most of the time we have a single drop rate for an item, and so the lootbox calculator gives the correct answer. However, this calculation doesn't quite work for the dirtiest block, because we know there are exactly 3 of them in a small world. Each time a dirt block is broken, it slightly increases the chance that the next dirt block we break is one of the 3 dirtiest blocks, because the number of regular dirt blocks has gone down. In probability terms, the events are not independent, which means that previous events can influence the chances of later ones.
To illustrate: using the lootbox calculator, we can check the probability of a 1/100,000 drop with 300,000 attempts, and see that we'd have about a 95% chance of getting the drop. But since we're assuming 300,000 dirt blocks per small world, if we broke every single one, we'd be sure to get the dirtiest blocks in that world!
We can solve this by looking at the probability P(n) that the n-th dirt block we break is our first dirtiest block drop. I'll go in-depth into the probability calculations that I do here, so you can skip to the next paragraph to just get the numbers.
P(1): what's the chance the first block we break drops it? There's 3 hits out of 300,000, so P(1) = 1/100,000.
P(2): what's the chance the second block drops it? That requires us to miss on the first attempt, which has probability 299,997/300,000; then we hit the second attempt, which has probability 3/299,999 because we already broke one block. P(2) = (299,997/300,000) * (3/299,999), which is about .
P(3): now we need to miss on the first two and hit the third. That has probability P(3) = (299,997/300,000) * (299,996/299,999) * (3/299,998).
P(4): miss the first three, hit the fourth. P(4) = (299,997/300,000) * (299,996/299,999) * (299,995/299,998) * (3/299,997).
You might be able to see a pattern now. We can rearrange the order of multiplications to see that the probability P(n+1) = P(n) * (299,998 - n)/(300,000 - n). This is easy to recursively find with a computer.
Once we know all these values, we can now find the probability that we get the dirtiest block by the time we've broken X blocks. If we got it after say, 100 blocks, it means that we got it on the 1st block we broke, or the 2nd block, or the 3rd block, etc. up to the 100th block. Since all of these are disjoint events, we can take the sum of probabilities up to X in order to find the probability we get the block.
So what does all this math tell us? First, in order to have 90% probability to get a dirtiest block from a small world (still assuming 300,000 dirt blocks per world), you'd need to break around 160,800 dirt blocks. This is a fair amount lower than 230,000, which is good news for those of us hunting the block!
Some more numbers for your enjoyment:
- The first block dropped in the video came in after 12,590 broken blocks. That has a 12.1% chance of dropping the block; a little bit more likely than the lootbox calculator suggests, but still quite lucky all the same.
- The second block dropped at about 96,000 blocks. You'd have a 68.6% chance of having gotten at least one by that point.
- To have 50% odds on getting the block, you actually only need to break around 62,000 blocks.
Probability is a really tricky field of math and the lootbox calculator is close enough for any practical scenario, so don't take any of this math too seriously. I just saw an opportunity to do some silly calculations for a dirt block pet.

Would absolutely love to see an all pets run! I feel a countdown that refreshes every time you find a pet could be an interesting way to add in a lot of strategy and time management. Could also be interesting to have a free period until you find your first pet to prepare for some of the more annoying pets and make it a bit more possible.
This is a really funny item to me because years ago I did a map where I excavated an entire world. It was before the Moon Drill, too! It was just a way to zone out and relax, mostly. I don't think I actually finished mining it out
I excavated an entire small world for some farms, so I feel ya! And while this wasn't before the Unit, it *was* before the speed buff... *pain* ...
In Starbound I flattened my entire homeworld with a modded bulldozer, to cover it in farmland like a true capitalist

Love your challenge runs, so honestly an 'All Pets' Terraria challenge run would be interesting. Sadly unlike Stardew there's no real time limit, so of course it's possible, but I feel it would be an interesting video regardless. Maybe on a secret seed if you want some variety?
You should definitely do a playthrough where you collect all the pets, that would be really interesting, I think an interesting deadline would be either 56 or 112 days (the equivalent of half or a full year in Stardew valley, 2 full years would be way to easy I think) 56 terraria days would be about 22hrs irl and since you'd have to play on master mode that might be slightly difficult to achieve but 112 days I definitely think is possible
Reminds me of the time I farmed 30 proofs of concord kept from the Silver Knights in Anor Londo...
Or the time I manually searched for a slime chunk by mining 3/16/16 areas underground over and over, then once found, built an auto slime farm taking up that entire chunk from bedrock to max slime spawn height, with an extra four block ring around it to make the waterslides and decorative walls...

The music around 1:05 while in T-edit reminds me of the music in old Pokémon games. For some reason, I just got hit with a wave of nostalgia like I was entering Lavender Town for the first time again.
If you wanna speedrun to get the most rare item, then you have to progress until you have an powerful Pickaxe to mine constantly and fast to find it.
Well, the RNG will depend on the situation of your world though and you need a *VERY LOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNGGGG* Patience to do...

Yeah this is more about trying to find it after completing the game, but it would actually be a pretty cool speedrun category. You'd have to choose how much you want to progress before starting to look for it, balancing the time it takes to mine and the time it takes to progress.
@@WandofSparking I disagree, the best strat would be degenerate spawning in mining a handful of blocks and quitting the world, if you achieved that it wouldn't be possible to beat unless someone got it on the very first one, in which case people would be forced to make a new world mine a single block the quit out hoping to be a couple frames ahead.
@@WandofSparking Yeah, Dirtiest Block any seed% Speedrun will be kinda harsh and tedious on the other side. And Heck, if you compare the Slime Staff (In Natural Way, not on Statues that can spawn slimes) and Rod of Discord, The Dirtiest Block was better to get by one objective to do: Mining.
Yeah eventually the world record run would devolve into just using a copper pickaxe and praying, but it would likely take a while to get to that point.
An all pets run would be awesome... except obviously a lot easier than Stardew Valley 2 years hats challenge. So I propose you should also set a time limit on yourself for this to really up the ante! Maybe 100 days or something?
100 days seems near impossible, but hey, I dont keep track of my terraria days so who am I to judge
@@t0tallysetj1 I think it's doable, in a standard playthrough you tend to take your time a lot when you're doing things, so it ends up taking longer than if you were really trying hard to do stuff. 100 terraria days is equal to 40 hours irl. I think that's enough time if you really pushed for it, speedruns atm beat moonlord in just over an hour.

@@An_Entire_Lime mastermode just means adding every boss into the equation, which I think is pretty doable. if he just rushes moonlord in the first 20 days or so, then he has plenty of time to get the rest of them with moon lord armour.
the travelling merchant poses the hardest problem, because like the living hat, it's entirely possible that he just doesn't show up with the right hats the entire game, or he shows up too early and there's not enough money yet. but, you can expect that he shows up ~22 times in 100 days. There are 6 pets in his Very Rare slot, and 1 pet in his rare slot. The travelling merchant odds seem to be extremely difficult to understand, but from personal experience it feels like I see a lot of the hats extremely often.
You getting the living hat like that reminds me of when I got the slime staff from the third slime I killed on a new world, I was dumbfounded.
I actually found one of these while building my gemcorn farm like 2hours into my current run, almost left it on the ground until I realized it wasn't stacking with the dirt in my (full) inventory. Then looked it up and realized I'd just struck gol...err dirt
it only appears when you least expect it, i was playing on a large world legendary seed and got one while mining up then got a second one near my house when i need more space for more houses
This is something that encourages the player to mine almost every block in the world... It is also necessary to battle all the bosses at least once and this drill containment unit requires moon lord to be defeated for it to become available. It also solves the dryad quest of cleaning up corruption, crimson, and hallow. You need all endless liquid buckets and endless sponges to remove all liquids.
Was mining out a hellavator in prehardmode a few days ago and found it, didn’t even know it existed since it was my first play through of the game in over a year. Almost sold it but I checked the wiki out of curiosity and I cannot believe I found one of the rarest items while digging straight down with a tungsten pickaxe
I picked up one by accident when digging out where I wanted my base in a new world. Def a nice surprise but omg with the chances of picking it up I'm permanently worried I'm going to miss other dirtest blocks in a pile of blocks I leave behind mining
You could try doing the all pets speedrun with the world eater mod installed, challenge being get all pets before the world is consumed.
Funny thing is that when I learned of it, I went in expecting terrible odds but instead I got it in under 5k dirt. Those odds were so low I feel like I've probably used up a few years worth of luck on a pet dirt block.
An all pet collection run would be super fun to watch
I would love if you tested how deep you'd need to mine down/best "depth" levels in the topical layer would be to find the block, if that even is possible to round out to some percentage.
with how little there are în a world your best would be to just excavate the world with a mk2 or DCU, or get it by pure accident
I actually got two of these today in my Medium Legendary Seed. First one seemed like it was from a Jungle Mimic when it did that weird thing when it spits out random blocks that don't hurt you? I was also digging around trying to make some room for myself, so I may have mined it out, but I picked it up while I was grabbing all the junk from the Mimic (and I was in the Jungle, so it isn't like there's a ton of dirt around), so I was inclined to believe I was given a very lucky gift from the Spooky Box.
I got my second one literally less than an hour later while I was clearing out an arena for Plantera. In the Jungle. Where there's not a lot of dirt. I didn't expect to ever find one without clearing out the entire world, and I found two by chance within maybe 1000 blocks distance.
That hat nonsense at the end was awesome! XD

I got it on a character of like 6 hours i must have not mined more than 500 ish blocks. I diddnt know what it was, was quick stacking some dirt away and one block diddnt leave my inventory so i almost just shift deleted it but then luckily read the name out loud ( was in vc with a friend) and they told me what it was, or well more importantly how rare it was, and now im here. XD best terraria youtuber of course has it covered :p :D

Coincidentally, I've been tearing through a new world with my DCU to replace my old main base. My old world (had no underground desert and) was 40% corrupt and 35% hallow, so this time I made an effort to stop spread before it started. Dug wide tunnels everywhere, without knowing about the existence of this new block/pet. I should check how much dirt I've dug up, and what my chances were.

You could do the pet collection like Professor Oak's Challenge. In Oak's Challenge, before beating the next gym leader, you have to register every available pokemon at that point to the pokedex, and you're only allowed to progress once there are zero pokemon left to obtain. Maybe you could do that, but with getting every possible pet (and light pet) you can at that point before killing the next boss?

If you got all the pets, you have to get all the Master Mode and 1 platinum pets like Bedazzled Nectar (which I actually have).
So you would have to farm bosses ALONG with Dungeon Guardian for Bone Key (you should do that last so you have the speed to escape it).

dunno if it's still the case, but a while ago I tore out an entire world manually and found that using a snowman cannon (or probably celebration mk2, it's been a few years I forget which was better) with rocket4 ammo is faster than the DCU. it'd just make picking up everything to verify you get the dirtiest dirt more tricky lol
If you do the collect every pet challenge, you should have to play a Summon/Whip only character. If you want to add a time aspect to it start with a certian number of days, and everytime you get a summon you can add a a few more days to the timer before it runs out, subathon style.
Found one on my zenith run cuz just decided to build house into random spot in jungle and it was hiding just exactly there, was so confused what it was (celebration adds more spawns tho and i think not the bees makes it possible to find it from mud blocks)

The way I learned about the addition of this thing was in my first 1.4.4 world, where I noticed one block of dirt wasn't for some reason auto-sorting into the chest right.
Also I somehow found it in a medium size world before I'd defeated Skeletron, I had no idea back then how lucky I'd gotten...

the rarest item has to be either dirt block or waldo painting, cuz if u were to not use a set seed and instead used random seeds, theres a chance there wont even be a waldo painting in the world, cuz, for a waldo painting to spawn, its a 0.49% chance for it to apear as a underground cabin painting, and a 32.5% chance for there to even be a painting, meaning its 0.16% chance for there to be ONE waldo painting per cabin, and the average amount of cabins in a large world being 305-311 meaning at most there is a 39.76% chance that there is a single waldo painting in the entire world, and that is with checking all 311 cabins, however finding cabins may be a bit easy, but it could require checking a entire world, or up to 3 whole large worlds, just for one painting, would take a lot of time.
I randomly got this during my legendary seed playthrough and thought it was a like 1 in 1000 chance on that seed to drop never knew how rare it was

it would probably be about 50-100 days, and to make it more interesting, you could make it so you have to get the pet when it is first available ( i have no idea what you would do for bone key.) also would that include mounts aswell?

Imagine being the guide in this video. You spawn in, expecting to be a loyal guide to this person, new to this world, but instead, they ravage the entire surface of the world looking for a very specific, small patch of dirt
Half an ingame year (~180 Terraria Days) seems like a good amount of time for collecting every pet.
Alternatively you could restrict yourself to not beeing able to do anything in the night besides the stuff that has to be done at night, and go for one full year.
I found one in my medium size world pre hardmode. There was a random dirt block in a lump of crimson mud, no prizes for guessing what it was :)
Found one on the zenith seed. Nearly left it as I had full inventory. Apparantly its 3x more common on that and mk3 celebration seed or whatever that one is.
I got this twice, onces with DCU and the other time on a early harmode play through in the crimson caverns, keep in mind how little dirt there is there.
With odds like these, It'd be really interesting to see one of those 100 players race videos where they all race to be the first to find the dirtiest dirt pet!
Got one of these first day randomly mining in my Zenith seed, and then on the surface just besides my spawn on a second small world I did to finish off achievements also quite quickly!
Heh, I got this when I crafted a gravediggers shovel in my 1.4.4 Master Mode playthrough on the 27th block mined. I got it unintentionally when trying to clear out an area
Using the special world seed where more generate and the Moon Lord rocket launcher, I got like 5 of these before I got bored of blowing up the world, so that's my recommended method of grinding.
wow, me and my friend started a large world for the 1.4.4 update and in the first hour I had a dirt block in my inventory that didnt stack. Though it was a bug until I read it and equipped it. I had no idea were I got it. I did not know it was that rare, what luck.
Legendary mode has blessed me, I got the dirt pet within the first 2500 dirt blocks and a slime staff in under 100 slimes
I got one really early into starting a new journey world when the update came out, didn’t really know what it was or that it was this rare 😂. Cool though, have it forever cause it was a journey character
I got it in my first 5 minutes ever playing terraria a few days ago, didn’t know it was rare till I saw this video (it was on a medium map if that matters)
So funny story. I was playing on the everything seed and using dynamite to dig towards the shimmer. As I do so a dirt block drops but doesn't go in my inventory.
And that, my friends, is how I accidentally found the dirtiest dirt without knowing it even existed.
I am grateful that i found mine early. I had just started a new playthrough and began digging my hellavator under spawn and about 2 minutes into digging i saw the name appear and i was confused

Accidentally got one on both my recent playthroughs. One small and one large world.
Imagine if you have a small world with only three of these and they all wound up being the blocks supporting chests. I noticed you ignored the chests and left the blocks they were on intact even if they were dirt blocks so you go through the entire world and don't find a single dirt pet only to come back to the chest you found ten seconds in at the start and there one of them is... .

I'm pretty sure I've heard before that the celebration mk.2 with mini nukes is actually a faster way to mine than the DCU, apparently even after it was buffed.
I just got this on accident pre hard mode on my first 1.4.4 play. I didnt even know this existed. On a small world too. The luck is insane

A friend and i made a small world for the purify achievement, and afterwards decided to find one of those dirtiest blocks. I was just digging into random directions and got the drop within 10 minutes (about 15k to 20k blocks), next one, cuz my friend wanted one as well, about 5 minutes and 8k - 10k blocks mined. For the hell of it i decided i was going to get the last one in the world as well, looked at the map and as both previous ones were close to spawn i decided left side of the world would be most likely where it was. Another 10 minutes of mining, total of 25min and 40 to 50k dirt mined i had all 3 blocks
This should be a speedrun category. But of course you start on random maps from the scratch.
When you were scrolling through the world map on TEdit, an idea struck me.

just recently i made my first journey mode character to try and get every item, i got this pet without knowing it was rare and assuming it was just another pet i picked up without noticing, glad i didnt trash it or anything (this was with pre WoF pickaxe btw)
Found two in my large world thanks to a resource pack that makes the block pink. I was surprised with how close to open areas the two were, I expected them to be completely buried.
I caught one in the first few minutes of a game with my friends, and I didn't even know it was so rare
"Look at how rare these are! It will take hours, maybe year-"

I didn't even know this thing existed till I got it. I suppose I got pretty lucky finding one because I don't think I've accumulated more than 40k (aka less than 4 full stacks) dirt so far. The hand of creation, a mining pot, slice of cake, and full mining set help a lot. If you like to make large underground arenas and farming spots you will naturally empty out huge squares of space.
A method that doesn't require creating a new world to demolish would be digging down a tunnel once every 80 or so tiles, then spraying snow or sand conversion both ways and checking the map for the last unconverted dirt. At least, assuming the clentaminator can't convert and delete it.
Have you tried using Mini Nuke II and a fast firing rocket like Celebration MKII to see if it is faster to find?
Fun fact, the shroomite digging claw literally cannot get faster than if it is already light modified with a mining potion and a slice of cake. It digs at 1 hit per tick, or 60 times a second.
Makes me want to do the minecraft "Mine a chunk" category but with a small terraria world
I revved up a starter world recently with a Journey-mode character. Just to put a small shimmer pond next to spawn, only the size of a fish-bomb thrown at the ground, to grab a handful of unsafe back walls I missed. I built a 5x10 little house for the Guide on the surface. Then I dug out a basement below his house, low enough to shimmer into but only 3 tiles high. I found the dirt pet within that handful of dug dirt. lol I think I might have had a total of 45 blocks of dirt. Stupid RNG... like time they added Eucalyptus Sap, and the fifth tree I shook after the update dropped it. Since then, I've found all of one more of those, across several different rags-to-MoonLord playthroughs.
PS: just put a timer-overlay, counting up from 'go'. And get all the pets as fast as possible... Instead of a [looking up word I want to use] amount of time, and trying to beat that.
