- Let's chat about psychologist burnout and compassion fatigue. It's suprisingly common, especially in new psychologists and an area I'm super into right now (cos... relatable). I share some of my experiences as well as how I set up a routine to try prevent it.
🌞 About Me: Hi! My name’s Ro and I’m a psychologist (and clinical psychology registrar) from Sydney, Australia!
💖 Subscribe to join me for videos on all things psychological science, mental health and my journey to becoming a psychologist
✏️ Comment down below, I’d love to hear your thoughts or questions :)
👍 Like to let me know you enjoyed todays video (it really helps me out!)
This video was incrediblyyyy helpful. Thank you so much. I'm about to swap degrees to psychology (which I've wanted to do from the beginning but fear held me back). You addressed all my main fears and worries and it calmed me so much. Knowing that you're a sensitive person like myself and still love the degree is so reassuring. A few questions if you get a chance (or for a future vid) - What kind of hours do you work in a week? Also do you have a time you start and finish roughly? (For example 8-5 on an average clinic day). Do psychologists have to take home much work or not really?
Your comment toally made my day, thank you, so glad you related ^^ Ooh good questions, so:
1. I work 3 full days in the clinic, but its 9-6pm most days, however I have a limit of 5-7 clients per day.
2. Psychologists do take home quite a bit in the form of admin (report writing, note-taking, research, school visits, calls with other health professionals), hence why its rare they work a full 5 day, most of my colleagues have at least 1 day where they do admin work. But I never do work on a night after clinic.
I also do some work with a youth mental health organisation + UA-cam and so I've decided to set my boundaries as only working 3 full days!
This was a great reminder for me as a therapist that it is enough to just be present and give the client that safe space. I had a rough day with a client with severe odd and ive been feeling like im not getting anywhere nor being useful. Thanks again for sharing ❤
You are really a motivation for me...i want to become a clinical psychologist in future and want to live comfortably by pursuing the stuff i like to do
Enjoying following your journey! I'm starting my Psychology undergraduate this summer after years out of education! Keep creating content, but at your own pace! I think most people who watch your videos will probably appreciate that you need balance to provide interesting, helpful content!
Thanks Karen! ☺️ That's so thoughtful and yes I definitely will!
Thanks for making this type of video! I had been freaking out about what I wanted to study and was keeping psychology in mind. Your videos made me feel confident in my decision to pursue it :)
Amazing! So glad to hear Samantha and best of luck ^^
Thank you for being honest and sharing! I've been back and forth about going into therapy as a career. I find myself in situations where people come to me for personal advice/counseling and I don't have the tools or techniques to help them.
I am naturally a deep person that wants to get the heart of an issue an work to solve it but I also have a heart for helping others and making a difference in their lives. My fear for going into therapy has always been burnout and/or bordem. But that said, I really want the concrete tools/experience to help the people emotionally instead of just "wise words".
I'm doing my bachelor's degree in psychology right now, your videos helping me a lot💜
Hey because Ur doing your bachelor's degree in psychology can u tell me what jobs can u get with the degree.
@@godog7850 I didn't really explore that much yet. I'm actually more inclined towards the idea of completing my master's first before doing job.
@@anuuwu2921 oh ok thank you for letting me know I just wanted to know because I have to fund my studies and working part-time does not really help much and I really don't want to take many loans. Anyway thanks
@@godog7850your welcome, you can opt for NGOs as well i guess
I love your videos I am a psychology major so I can’t wait to learn more from you and others!!! 🧡🧡
I must agree with other's people's comments-this was so helpful during my own burnout as a therapist! To know this is a normal experience for other clinicians is so helpful & encouraging.
As a sensitive and very empathetic, anxious personality myself I just wanted to say I love your thoughts and experiences you are sharing here. What's helped me the most is hearing you working 3 days a week with breaks in between regardless of what other people are doing and expecting. Accepting your needs and working accordingly, taking of the pressure. This made me feel calm and more sure in myself. I am studying "Heilpraktikerin für Psychotherapie" in Germany, which is a kind of natural and very gentle therapy approach. After being finished I am allowed to work with only specific disorders, mostly people with depression, burnout, ptsd, bpd, anxiety disorders ect and guide people through their day to day life stressors and providing a safe space for difficult times.
Hi Jessica thanks so much for sharing
Roanna,I wanna tell you I like this video❤️ I feel relief.
thank you so much for your transparency. I am about to start my prov psych internship and I have been trying to find a youtuber who just talks about the psychologist work side of things.
i think i am quite similar to you with being extremely empathetic and sensitive - i cry a lot too! haha. so thank you for normalising a few things, it was what i needed to hear :)
I really enjoyed this video. I'm about to start Clinical Masters and I'm a tad nervous. Your video made me feel so much better about everything. Thanks!
I find your videos so insightful! thanks and keep it up :)
Hiiii! please share your daily self-care routine that helps you with such burnouts. You're amazing!
I have a video up about it!
I am a psychology student and I want to become a clinical psychologist because I inspired by my psychologist and she help me a lot. But I have a lot of doubt on myself, can I still be a psychologist if I suffer from depression and anxiety?
Thanks for all of your videos! Looking forward for your weekly video!
Of course! As long as it doesn't get to point where it gets in the way of your role or drains you too much- however plenty of psychologists have some lived experience (including me!). I would probbaly suggest getting some support from a psychologist now as well so you have a good support network. Good luck!
Great insights! Keep the good work up (:
Simply love your content!! ❤️
Hi - interesting video content...burnout of professionals in the health area is prevalent....thanks
Thanks for sharing this!
This video was really insightful! I'm currently studying undergrad psych at UNSW (BSc Adv) 😊 I'm just wondering what jobs did you do during your undergrad degree? I can't seem to find many jobs which don't require a degree or experience :(
Ikr it's the catch 22!! I did ABA therapy and after hours telephone counselling (kinda like lifeline) which counted as clinical experience :)
Hi Tanvi, I'm doing the same degree & major as you at the same uni 😊 As Roanna recommended, something like Lifeline is great. I've been volunteering there for about 4 months now. It's a fantastic way to get a feel for what it's like to support people through a period of emotional crisis, and the training/support is fantastic.
A lot of what you said Roanna really resonated. One big realisation I've had is that I simply won't have all the answers, or even be able to empathise with some callers who have had really awful things happen in their lives, but I can still be compassionate and supportive, even if it's just by providing a safe space to talk openly and where they can feel validated. Looking forward to this new series and thanks so much for your insights!
@@thepsychdiaries thank you for the reply! I'll make sure to keep a look out for any opportunities ☺️
@@nikkihuang7635 Hi Nikki! That's definitely very true, we may not always be able to relate to someone's struggles, but I'm sure it must feel incredibly rewarding to know that you are helping someone feel better! ☺️ Also, hope your 2061 and 2001 exams went well hahaha!
@@nikkihuang7635 Love this ^^
You are really lovely, thank you for being you♥
loved it!!
Hello Ro! Ive been watching your videos for about a month and I have found it really helpful as I decide whether I should study a Grad Diploma of Psychology then Honours to become a Registered Psychology. My name is Kay and I am from Sydney too!
I am 30, is it too late to start on this pathway? For eg with being a model, there is a age where people don't want you as a model. Is there an age dislike in Psychology where people dont see you cause your in your 40s 50s?
What if I don't make it to Honours or Master's? Is there other job opportunities? Do everyone become a Registered Psychologist when they study Grad Diploma in Psychology ?
Do you think I can work full time and study full time in my Graduate Diplma of Psychology?
Thanks.
I am working for a tel counselling services at night and only get 4 hours of sleep , even with the assistance of sleeping pills . We are getting pressure to be quicker with our ACW. Should I resign I am constantly tried , and there is a part of me especially after 5am get tried of hearing people problem
Hi ma'am, I'm from Philippines. I am BS Psychology student and we have project to interview one professional in psychology. If you have time please allow us to interview you. It is a big help for us. Thank you and God bless. You help us a lot.
Hi there! Could you please let me know what the scope of a phd in psychology is in Australia? does it pay more than just a masters? is it required for a specific kind of work?
PhD are research degrees, it doesn't necessarily mean you're paid more but you can do more types of jobs eg become a lecturer or full time researcher
What psychological conditions have you encountered the most as a CP?
Ooh interesting q! Depends whether through adult or child clinic- for adult personally it's probably some sort of elevated anxiety and for child probably emotion regulation difficulties :)
@@thepsychdiaries Thanks Roanna! Yeah anxiety is quite prevalent, I was expecting PTSD too
Hey!! I don't know if you see this comment but if you do please answer.
I am going to enroll in Bachelor of Human Behavioural in Australia as international student. May be in qut or in another university.
I want to ask if I am perusing my bachelor's in this field, can I work in a clinic. So that I can earn some money. If yes can I work fortnight more than 40 hours if am working in clinic?
How much an undergraduate can if he's working in clinic?
So sorry I don't think I've ever heard of that degree before- at the psychology clinics at I work at you must do a psychology degree but I would suggest asking your specific uni as they might have different types of work. Best of luck!

Hi Balwinder, you will need to do a 4th year sequence in psychology followed by a postgraduate degree (masters or doctorate) to practice as a psychologist in Australia. Go onto the Australian Psychological Society website and then click on 'training and careers' and then 'study pathways'. There will be a helpful diagram which shows the pathways towards becoming a psychologist in Australia. You can also speak to a course advisor at any university. Before you enrol into any course make sure that it is APAC accredited
