Plane Hitting Me in St. Barth

- Опубліковано 29 лис 2014
- I have taken a lot of photos in St. Barth since I first visited this Caribbean island in 1995, including a lot of plane landings. In January 2014, I was standing next to a traffic circle in a permitted area waiting to get a good image of a plane just as it past over me and the road in front. I saw this Winair plane coming in and got ready to get the shot I waited for several hours that day. This one came in very low and the wheel hit me in the head and knocked me out. In the slow motion you can see me start to fall forward after the hit. I remember the hit, and then I was out.
I fell face first into the ground with the camera in my face, ruining the camera and requiring stitches in two areas. I may have been out for about 20 minutes until the ambulance arrived to take me to the hospital. With very good care, I was stitched up and taken care of in less than two hours and asked to be released.
I then walked from the hospital to my friend's bar called Le Select where I met a few friends and two new ones. It turned out that the two new friends were there visiting my other friends and were on that exact same plane. They felt a hit, but could not believe it actually hit me. Tom & Darla Wright are this couple and they took the video inside the plane that you see here.
Still not believing me, we went to Eddy's restaurant down the street where at the very next table was a gentleman that came up to me - my head was wrapped in bandages. He could not believe that I was the one who got hit because he had a video of it from the ground. He showed all of us a still of the wheel on my head - now my friends believed that I actually got hit.
The video from the ground was taken by Arthur Dimitri DeVassal.
Only in St. Barts could I get hit by a plane and survive and then that same day meet the people that had a video of the entire experience.
I have published a "coffee table" type photo book of panoramic images of St. Barts called St. Barth XL and have art prints on display at a gallery in St. Barts called Les Artisans. Of course, one is a collage of plane landings.
My nickname there became, "Better Ed Than Dead." Maybe just a half inch lower and this video would not have such a happy ending. Only in St. Barth!
Thanks to Matthew Gauthier in Canada for editing the videos.

I was hit in the nose by the wingtip of an A-4 Skyhawk on the flight deck of USS Oriskany in 1969. The airplane was just sitting there minding its own business and I walked right into it. We were in port and I had been drinking. A lot.
Is that an A-4 in your profile pic? I know its the navy trainer jet right?
I take it you normally didn’t play it fast and loose on the aircraft carrier, except when inebriated.
@@glitchinthematrix5761 Hi Glitch. This is a pic of a model A-4F Skyhawk I bought on Ebay. I was looking around and found this beautiful replica of one of my squadron's planes - even with the correct ship (USS Ticonderoga) painted on the aft fuselage under the tailplane. This is not a TA-4F, the 2-seater used for training.
How was the Scooter? Did they have to replace the wing?
@@kekelaward Its landing gear collapsed when it fell to the deck laughing at me.
I am glad that no one was seriously hurt, but this reminds me of one of those news stories where a pedestrian is hit by at train. How do you get hit by a train? Only by being on the tracks.
Sometimes it’s suicide, most of the times it’s just people who risk their lives for a 30 second timesave
Love this comment 😂
yeah but... planes are amazing
As a person who works with trains. People are stupid. If trains are doing any kind of switching it’s not going fast and they think they can beat it, also sometimes idiots think a train that is sitting in a crossing but hasn’t moved for a few minutes is safe to cross over the end platforms for the cars…they end up getting slacked off into the tracks and painted up every wheel of the train when it moved unexpectedly.
That last scenario just happened to a short line near us about 5-7 years back.
That train ended up being dropped off to the place I currently work (wasn’t there myself at the time) but the crew on duty only grabbed the first car as because the rest were painted red in that fools remains and the first car was the only one they figured wasn’t a biohazard cuz he wasn’t smeared on it. Eventually they had to get a special cleanup crew to take care of it given the places safety standards (FD considered just to hose him off as we drove by)
Anyways, don’t be stupid around trains, they don’t stop good, they don’t slow down good, they are heavier than you could possibly imagine, the amount of momentum at any given time is obscene. One engine and one loaded rail car going 5mph has the same potential energy/momentum as a Ford F-150 traveling at 550mph
🤣
Kind of had that coming. Don't stand near a runway and I'm pretty sure you'll avoid getting hit by an airplane. Glad you're OK, tho' 🤣
Exactly.
That’s exactly what I was thinking 🤔 “Probably not a great idea to stand in the approach path of an airplane.” Second thing I thought was “I hope he’s OK.”
Not to mention facing away from approaching aircraft.
Absolutely.
Precisely. And on a high perch. The pilot has no way of gauging where you are while on approach. Think before you dink.
You will never guess what lands on runways!!!

Went to St. Barth's on vacation in 2006. After landing I grabbed my luggage and headed straight to the flight school where I hired an instructor and I flew 8 full-stops! That was the most fun I have had flying into any civilian airfield. What a hoot!
Damn... jealous.
its "fun" in msfs 2020 too, first to find the damn airfield and then land on it lol.

So you left the paved area to climb through a 3 metre fence and about four or five metres up the hill while under the flight path. Can't think of something that's much dumber than that. Now, if you make an issue of it the only safety measure they can do is to close off that whole area to foot traffic and ban everyone from stopping a car or exiting a car in that area.
Shut up bitch, if he wants to get hit by a plane it's 100% not your fucking choice
@@potatojake197 That comment makes absolutely no sense as a reply to my comment where I basically say the guy that got hit is an idiot for putting himself in the way of the plane. Were you replying to another comment that got pulled?

In other news: a guy was hit by a truck while he stood on the yellow line in the middle of the road.
I hope Ed has recovered because he took it for us to learn what getting hit by a twin prop plane feels like. Now not only do we not have to know, but he put a cherry on top of this by freaking surviving!

Dude! You actually got hit on the head by a plane! Ouch!
Reminds me of when I was in St Maarten watching the planes land and a particularly low KLM 747 caught me right in the nuts with its nose gear. That really smarted, I can tell you. 😉

I was in St. Maarten and grabbed ahold of the landing gear of an incoming Airbus A380, holding on for dear life before rolling safely onto ground with a few summersaults. What a rush! No, seriously, I did...was epic.
It turned them into a Jesus nut
Lets get this straight, you were there because you knew the planes approach path brings them very low through this intersection and yet when you put yourself directly in harms way, you "could not believe that it hit you?? You may want to stay away from anything moving from now on.
This is the type of guy who, when I worked at a ranch that did horseback riding flipped out when the horse moved. Yes, that's a living creature you're sitting on.

I wonder if it's a good idea to stand in the path of an airplane as it's coming in on approach. I'm not sure, so I'll try standing in traffic first to see what happens.
Great idea. You'll probably get an award. A Darwin-award :p

I was hit in the forehead by a Cessna 152 at my local flight club. I was walking around the hangar and the wing was right there in front of me! How rude of it!

Plane hitting me...more like; me standing in flight path...
I'm a pilot and our family ran an airport. As teen my grandmother had me replace runway lights I never was keen on this chore so I had my friend with me to keep an eye open. He warned me the first time so I looked and the acft was 100-200 feet from me, some hair was caught in the Cherokee's wing.
What a friend...
bonk
I love how there's us lifeless people who call having to tidy your room a chore and that's what we hate when our mom makes us do it, then there's you who replace runway lights...
But then again, why did they allow traffic onto a runway undergoing maintenance?
Suggestion: Don't hang out in aircraft landing zones.
Next time try standing on the piano stripes. You 'll get a better picture from there.

Seriously Ed, those pilots already have a tough enough job without someone standing directly in the flight path. Have you considered changing hobbies to watching trains from the train tracks? It is much less dangerous for everyone else.
Thats one hell of a story to tell! good thing your ok.

Bro might be the first person to say that his head touched a flying plane from the outsides
How in the world did you just got away with only two stitches? You must be extremely lucky!
What a ding ding!!!😂 He doesn't even look at what's coming his way! I'm sure the pilot is tired of people getting in the way and decided to kind of tap him in the-cabeza!😂😂
I'm sure the pilot had no chance to react at all and would have been really sad despite it not being his fault if the hit had been fatal.
Glad he didnt lose his head over this. Dont stand so close in the future.
Only simple question
Why did he stood right in the aircraft's approach path ?
All you need is a camera to be invincible...

Well, this should be regarded as an accident, people standing 7 miles away from an airport in a "safe zone" can still get hit by a plane
The other comment may be right that he's really stretching the definition of being "in" the safe zone though. Just because you can stand on the side of a formula 1 race track doesn't mean you are still in the allowed and safe area if you climb a fence and go stand in the middle of said track.
