Just got to tell you how helpful these videos are. I'm currently getting back into big band writing and it's great to to have all these options tried and tested as a frame of reference. Thanks and great job! :)

You are welcome! I'm glad to hear you're getting back into big band writing. You'll find quite a few of my videos interesting I'd say.

Thank you Alex for continuing this series. I particularly liked that you pointed out that one should consider which instruments play which sub-chords/notes (trombone vs. trumpet, bari or trombone for the root note), to make a flavor more audible or a voicing better balanced. Throughout the history of big band music, in particular the sax players had to double on instruments like clarinets and flutes while the brass had the added sound changing devices, e.g. mutes and flangers. I assume some chord setups might be better for all-sax sections, others more interesting when adding a clarinet or flute to the mix.
And Gil, of course, he was a master at using instruments that were uncommon in big bands, ranging from tubas and bass clarinets to French horns, oboes and bassoons. As you alreday discussed in many of your videos. All this influencing his use of chord voicings.
Is the choice of instruments for specific voicings something you might want to talk about with respect to your arranging series? Best, Peter

Hello Peter. Thanks for your comment. Yes that is something I'd consider making a video on. I do talk about certain instruments and their place in a voicing on the orchestration videos. Have a look at the flute, tuba, alto sax and french horn ones. You might enjoy those.

This is so interesting and instructive. For example not defaultly doubling the root note of the chord but another "spice note" like in 6:50

Loved the bit at the end with how to split chords up over a big band!

Yeah, I should probably do a few more of those vids. Big band voicings are scattered throughout my vids. Including examples from the legends in 'Big Band Chords Compared'
