I love how soft spoken he is I'm definitely going to read more of his books, personally the girl next door crossed a line of taste for me but I thought I could handle it that was my mistake

You know it's based on true events? (You also have two film versions to choose from)

@@siasti Yes I know it's based on real events that's why it bothered me, he takes everything from the real story and amplifies it making it worse for the character of Meg. I think thats were the line of taste was crossed for me, Jack was known for taking real horrific stories and basing his books on them. That in my opinion is wrong real people are affected by these books most have probably spent years in hiding or in therapy trying to forget or move on from such traumatic events. I don't say this lightly and I hate having to say it about an author I begrudgingly admire, but when you think about it he's profiting of the misery of others and abuse of others. He also takes the already horrific story and just makes it even worse like what happens to Meg with the burning and lesbian abuse of the little sister. Sylvia Likens endured torture comparable to that of Christ or William Wallace in a time that supposed to be beyond such brutality, next door neighbours heard her scream and at that time people always lived by the idea of minding their own business. The only good thing to come out of this case was that people started calling the police when they hears unusual amounts of screaming or yelling, they took an interest when they seen kids running around that looked like they hadn't been fed or looked like they'd been hit or beaten up. The Girl Next Door for me just is a story that didn't need to be published they didn't care about Sylvia the real girls memory and didn't take into consideration how her surviving family would feel, and he just made the whole story more horrific as I've said multiple times but it's just wrong and to make a movie out of it is even worse. I will say that the ending, with the character of David is very powerful but ultimately this story and the movie are just wrong.

@@fullcomicalchemist2195 Great reply. Thanks. I see your point(s). All I can add is that the book stands as a kind of monument to her suffering and means that it wasn't meaningless and will never be forgotten. Very few authors would have the courage and determination too deal with this material long enough to create a novel out of it. Yes, Ketchum has been accused of being "distasteful" but he's really only shedding light on man's inhumanity to man. Also, the fact that it's based on real events gives it a credibility and power that evades fiction stories because you can't dismiss it as just a story. Overall, I believe that it is a justifiable endeavour but I do understand that there are strong arguments against it.

@@siasti The true life, horrific story of Sylvia Likens was beyond sad, gut-wrenching. Ketchum's novel, with its simplistic dialogue, and predictable violence, borrowed heavily from the actual events and should not be rated so highly. Though he's not a horror writer, neither his buddy Stephen King, nor Ketchum are in the same class as Cormac McCarthy. Just read the first few pages of Suttree to understand this fully.
