    1. That NAS is awesome and I want one too! 😭
    2. The fact that it's a NAS doesn't necessarily imply that you have redundancy, although most of them do have some kind of RAID configuration.
    3. What I try to do with my data is:
    - Have the most important data in three places, one of which is off-site (e.g. internal hard drive, Time Machine, cloud storage).
    - Have everything else that I can't just download again on two different hard drives (my video footage is on a 1.5 TB drive, and I have another one which is an exact copy).
I would use something like Backblaze for my video footage (and other large files) as well if I had better upload speed. I think to upload everything to the cloud it would take months with my current internet speed.

USE BLAZE BACKUP - I don't work for them or get paid by them in any way but they will archive all your files in the cloud for $5 a month. What if your apartment burns down or someone steals all your HD's you can still get them back with BLAZE - I have several SSD's for current projects and a NAS system for the first layer of backup and BLAZE as the final layer. Actually, one time when I had one of the old SCSI RAID systems it got fried and guess what I lost like 20TB but it was all in the cloud so I got it all back in about a week. SO hopefully you read this among your thousands of comments and consider this advice from someone who knows from experience.

NAS NAS NAS. I have 2.. a cheaper 2 drive QNAP NAS using RAID 0 that I put movies, music, etc on, and a Synology 5 bay setup with 5 drives and redundancy. Seagate IronWolf Pro NAS drives (up to 10TB each now) or NAS specific drives. I then copy family video/photos to my 2 drive NAS that is backed up to my 5 bay NAS so they are backed up in at least two places. I also have a USB 3.1 Gen 2 (USB-C) drive dock that allows me to quickly swap older drives that I used to use for extra backup if need be... and with 10Gbps speeds its pretty fast to copy to (to be fair, single drives cant even write nearly as fast as that).

Be careful! Raid is not a backup, there are tons of reasons such as drive non-independency, for example if there are problems with the main supply or one of the drives catches fire, they are all stuffed in one case and they will be ruined all together. A nas is great for keeping files you are working on but it's much safer keeping backups of your important stuffs in other hard drives in a different place (they are most of the times unplugged and it reduces the risks)...
Maybe I'm not the best person to explain the various reasons not to use Raid for backup but if you google just " raid is not backup" you'll find thousands of articles with well explained reasons.

Thanks for the Image Capture tip, Sarah! Clearing photos and vids from the phone as I write this and sending to my external G-Raid which is set to backup automagically to my cloud service. I like some features of iPhoto, but some make me crazed. Now.....I need to figure out how to save my iMovie videos to my Video folder on the same G Raid drive. Getting stuff out of iMovie is a bitch. I use it because I shoot a lot of my on camera stuff with a web cam and dealing with audio sync issues in Premiere was too much aggravation for what I'm doing. So I went back to iMovie which has no audio sync issues. But I don't know how to get my finished vids to my correct folder. I don't want my computer hard drive filled up with the knitting videos.

Google Photos for unlimited space for your photos and Backblaze to backup on the cloud that sexy NAS. For 50 USD you get unlimited space to backup everything. Usually for a NAS you should pay an extra fee, but since it's attached to your computer it'll see it as a HUGE external hard drive and probably you won't have too many problems with that. Except if you have an slow Internet connection. But, that's another thing :P

And for those who don't know, NAS basically just means a hard drive(s) with its own little built-in computer running it (usually some form of Linux I think), attached to your network, usually wired directly into your wifi router.

Sorry, you lost you photos. Your 1 TB on your Mac Pro will fill up fairly fast. You'll have to archive to your NAS or store your videos on your new NAS.

Sorry this happened to you! Thanks for sharing though as I am currently full on my desktop and external drive this knowledge was valuable.
Think back... did you text pictures to anyone the last 3 year?! Ask them did they save them and text back to you. Go save all your pictures from Instagram. I lost notes of 3 years on my phone. As a writer that was painful to realize. I don't use notes any longer. And I except the fact they are gone. I try to see it as a time of practice writing and I didn't need them anyways. Talk about purging and starting fresh.

  • @smoothietide
    @smoothietide 7 років тому

NAS itself doesn't lead to redundancy. Any hard drive or usb could be a NAS system. What you have is a NAS in RAID configuration. RAID stands for redundant array of independent disks. RAID, besides being redundant and being more resilient to disk failure can also increase read/write speeds.

Hi Sara, You need 'off-site' storage too. The Cloud is not that practical for video backup, but you should keep a 2nd backup copy of your most valuable files somewhere trustworthy other than at your apartment. Perhaps at your folk's house? Apple's iCloud can backup everything on your iPhone automagically - the subscription cost is reasonable. You might even like to consider having a service make prints on paper (gasp) of your most treasured photos (a photo album is a great low-tech backup and you did say that you enjoy coffee table books). Keep On, Keepin' On!

Why not use iCloud Photo backup (few $ a month for 200GB) and Google Photos (free for unlimited, high quality pics and vids)? You then can also keep a full copy on your Mac and an external. I have my photos backed up in 5 different locations with very little effort.

And knowing that if one of the drives in the nas fails i can hotswap it and it will clone the working drive right away.

Shoebox is an amazing photo backup solution for photos. It will backup right from the phone (iPhone for me, but I'm sure they have an Android app as well). And also any folders you set on the Mac or PC that contain photos. It is awesome and dirt cheap. For everything else I use CrashPlan which has also been a great backup solution. Single computer license is cheap and it will backup ALL drives attached to that machine.
    Cloud backup is KEY.

Did you ever use Time Machine or a Time Capsule on your machine? If you did use that backup. If not than I'm sorry for your loss, but now that you have a NAS setup Time Machine to backup your Mac at night. Also, add the Flickr app to your iPhone and pump your iPhones pictures to their cloud on a daily bases. Likewise, you can also save them up on iCloud. This will give you multiple places to safe your images. The raid capability of the NAS will allow you to actually pull a drive if it goes down and the NAS will rebuild your files onto the new replacement drive. Good luck.

with what you seem to have now, you can have at least 2 copies (local small disk + NAS archive) and then if you still eventually have a former student google drive (they're unlimited usually) you could also run encrypted backups to your google drive. Personally for those cloud backups I use the Arq Mac app (not affiliated but happy user) to my google drive.
Supposedly you NAS can do something like that too (automatic encrypted backups of it's content to the google drive).
If you don't have an unlimited student google you could also get one for your freelance status that is also usually unlimited for a not too expensive fee.
    :)

Sara, just saw this video and saw how you had your hard drives from past years in just a box. I learned from my mentor long ago, that you should store those in a FIRE RETARDANT safe, case, box, something. In case there is a fire, or sprinklers come on, or you get robbed, whatever, They are protected and you won't be screwed. You can recover your memories or client work, etc.

Ohh Sara, you really need to learn how to do your backup! :D
I have a raid 1 running in my home computer, back upped to a raid 10 running on my NAS, back upped to a raid 10 running on a NAS at my parents house. I think six times the same data will be safe enough ;)

Hey, Sara! And anyone reading this those Lacie hard drives are the worst. I've worked on a film project and we backed up all the footage on to these two brand new 1tb Lacie hard drives. We then had those two brand new LaCie hard-drives get corrupted that same day. Thank Goodness, we got lucky and backed it up on to different hard drives.
From what I've read Hitachi makes the best hard drives, so external hard drives like G-drive's are extremely reliable.

Also look at CrashPlan Family, which gives you unlimited online back up. But iCloud storage for your photos is perfect

Ever thought of TimeMachine and/or iCloud Backup? - TimeMachine is perfect and it even backs up your iPhoto/Fotos library!

I'm not an expert by any means, but some people I know who are, tell me that all hard drives will fail. The only way to truly backup your material is to burn them to DVD-R discs. Taiyo Yuden discs are a suggested brand and are archival quality. I know it's a pain to burn discs, but the loss of valuable data is too.

Google drive, Microsoft Onedrive and Apple iCloud. Better save then sorry. Also if you have Amazon prime, you also get unlimited space for pictures.

Do you not backup your photos and/or data to iCloud? If you buy extra iCloud storage, then you can just back them up.. or use a different backup service...

I see iCloud and Google Photos mentioned. Dropbox automatic upload could have also saved you. Hope you somehow get something back! Losing phone photos and videos is the worst.

I either save them to Google drive or my lightroom catalog. I have the $10 a month creative cloud membership. And a lot of the time my photos just edited Through lightroom before I posted to social media anyway. I find it much easier to edit my photos personally on my computer. And I find that he gives me a more unique look.
