English is not my native language, and because of that, I think have a “mix” of accents but I mainly pronounce the words with an american accent. Still, for me the kiwi accent is just so beautiful and I really wanted to try and see if I can pronounce stuff like they do 😅
When you do Dress vowel, you need to take the 'E' sound long like "PEEN" and when you do Kit vowel you say it faster like "PIN". There are many differences but for the people who don't know the New Zealand accent will not understand it easily. Like the word "Best" was faster like 'E' but the word "Beast" was longer like 'EE", even "Bed" was faster but "Bead" was longer.😊👍🏻
I apparently have an American accent despite living in New Zealand my whole life. A lot of my teachers and friends have pointed it out and made fun of me :,)) so here I am
Awesome video by the way! It's very informative :)
A lot of people made fun of my grandmother's accent too when she moved to NZ from Scotland. :( All accents are awesome! The main point is being able to communicate. :) Hope you're doing well in Level 2 or 3, depending on where you are in the country.
i lived in new zealand for almost my whole life and when i went to learn overseas, my english teacher told me i had an american accent. this interaction was 3 years ago but it still haunts me to this day
@caullipigeon sorry for the late reply but the reason for you having an american accent is likely due to exposure to a lot of TV and american media (speech) from a very young age.
Just like tagalog and bisaya in the philippines.
E sounds becomes i sound.
5:10 I feel like you can tell what they're talking about by context as a southrener in the u.s I say pin and pen the same and we go throughout our day just fine without being confused so vowels being confused here wouldn't be a problem.
Thanks for sharing this video. I am going to NZ this month, and i find i need to work on more on this vowel.
I like very much, thanks for your good video
Thank you so much!
No problem, Pan Pan. Hope you are doing well.
so cuteee
Hehe. Thanks, haha. I hope it was informative.
I like it very much 😊
Hi, Mahesh, thanks very much. This vowel, in particular, is one of the most difficult ones, so I'm happy it helps. Hope you and your family are staying safe during this time.
Ive been away 25 years and think this dress vowel has happened during this time.
It was always the i vowel that lynn of tawa or karen hay noticably used [fush chups]. Am i wrong ?
The phrase: “ My pen is on the desk” makes me laugh, if I say it fast
Omg, I have to turn on the subtitles to get her. 🤷 Btw ,I love newzelend accent. Love from India.
If I speak english, it is qua vocabulary learned from tv, but qua pronounzation dutch, and in scool I was tought Brittish English, and in spelling I sometimes innovate based on wordflow cause there are difrences between the american and Brittish one.
Can you do one about the bizarre R as in “no don’t go there” kiwi: “narr dorrnt goarrh theeah”
read vs red? lift vs left?
This is so hard every e is replace with the i , i cant understand cuz i speak american accent .
I like the kiwi accent, something similar as british and non rothic accent
Hi, Fernando. Thanks for the comment. Sorry to the late reply. Yes, good observation that most speakers of NZ English have a non-rhotic accent. I'll be creating a video about that later in the year.
It is so surprising to know how new zealanders pronounce. Quite different.
The way you pronounce "wednesday" is totally different to how I used to know it.
How did you used to know the word "Wednesday"?
@@noctisocculta4820 I pronounce it “wensday“ (2nd syllable is missing)
@@thisisdak Oh okay, that's exactly the way the lady pronounces it. Weird.
@@noctisocculta4820 To non New Zealanders, the pronunciation of the word Wednesday sounds more like windsday. That's because there was a chain shift in vowels from standard English, so e became i, i became u and a became e. There's some interesting videos and articles on it.
Oh churr bo
The most interesting aspect of this is not the obvious, what we hear, but how it has come about historically. As a linguist, explanation is essential. Description is not enough.
You're the bEst :)))
xDDD (wordplay)
Alabama accent and kiwi accent when mix sound good
Pain
how is this real
The background music is annoying and unnecessary.
Background music too loud.
I think men's should check their owm deck after 40 years old ......
Cuz 40s old deck should be really soft and rotten
No matter who is on it will become a huge dangerous
And no one wants to sit on it
I fully cant do it WHAT THE FUCK 😡😡😡
