I've watched this multiple times over the past few years and it always makes me think about if I'm being a manager or a leader with my staff. I would like to think I am a leader and they would follow.
Managers do all of these things as well. The distinction between managers and leaders is often hyped up and reflects a stereotypical bifurcation rather than a qualitatively distinct reality. In truth, many leaders need to manage operations and many managers need to inspire people.
T White That’s awesome... I love hearing the different spaces and places that use this video. From Ivy League Businesses Classes, to Fortune 500 companies, Boy Scouts, TSA, non-profits, school systems, pharmaceutical companies, oil and gas, aeronautical, pro sports and hospitality management/culinary arts. 👍🏾
With years of significant growth and experience in the area of management and leadership, I can say, Scott is right on! Scott, I am very imrpessed! To setting the direction, breaking the rules, and new roads!
Hi, Scott, I'm in college right now as I write this comment and this video is in my studies you talked about how you lead not manage your staff. And that alone says a lot because there are a lot of churches as well as the company's don't know the difference between the two. And for me, it will take me a long way in whichever to go. Thank you, Scott.
I'm a college student and is taking various classes on management vs. leadership. This video has helped me put everything in perspective of my classes in a straightforward manner. This video was awesome and thank you for sharing.
There are 3 vids in particular which I rely on to re-instate &/or re-affirm myself in, & to myself when needed; two are yours. Thank You 4 being You...
Thank you, Mr. Williams. Tomorrow morning I will start my new post as Office Manager. I have been so nervous because I have always been a leader but never a "manager". I searched for "tips for new managers" and this video is the first I watched. How glad I am that I found this. Thank you SO much for helping me realize that I can continue leading my co-workers without having to manage them. You have helped me so much without ever actually meeting me. Keep posting these gems. You gained a subscriber.
Wow, @Scott Williams, that's the most valuable summary of managers versus leaders I have ever seen. You have eloquently laid out the key differences, and effectively communicated the value that leaders bring to people. Bravo! I am glad I found your video. Congratulations!
I am about to embark on an program for aspiring leaders and I just want to say that this video inspired me and summed up 100% the difference. I am extremely fortunate that I follow an amazing leader who is giving me complete support and energy to help me to become the leader I want to be. Thanks for this video it is fantastic :D
It's never the wrong time to do the right thing. Glad to hear about the success, sorry to hear abt the season of mild depression. Glad to hear your new season is awesome.
Scott, I just finished watching the video. This is probably one of the best, if not the best, example of defining the two! Great job and thanks for sharing! Rob
Great great speech, Gave me a valuable insight about my way of being a manager sorry a leader and my current manager I 'll let you know when I 'll get his job
I'm very impressed with this video. I'm sad to say the my manager is leaving my company and she's been the ideal leader, supporting, motivating and constructive. She was the anti-manager. She encouraged idea building and freedom to choose how the work gets done. I love this video because it reinforces my beliefs about the best people to work with. My former leader, not manager, acted as a partner with me in our business rather than a person who needed to breathe down my neck and enforce unimportant guidelines and regulations. I grew instead of retreated as a result.
@@melvinstolk8191 I am now a leader myself and have had the opportunity to be surrounded by really incredible leadership. 1. If you're managing people, create the goals together. 2. You can be responsible for the "what" of what the team needs to get done and allow the team to drive the "how" of what to get done. This is the agile approach to leadership. 3. Allow the team to make mistakes. Failures trigger emotional responses which lead to change. If the team is afraid of a leader breathing over their necks, they will never grow. They will only retreat. Focus on what the team is doing well, take those success steps and apply them to your next round of work. If the team fails at 99/100 things, analyze what part of the *process* isn't working. Never focus on making people wrong. If employees are not succeeding, fix the process and coach the people.
Concise and [the] presentation on point; you've provided direction, as it is only unto those who listen to understand the purpose of what your describing.
This video brought a lot of information to the surface on the topic of leadership. As a leader you have to understand and deliver in your role. The reason why is because people are depending on you and looking to you to make the decisions that will ultimately affect them one way or another on a daily basis. On the otter hand as a manager you are focusing more on the fact that your employees have a job to do and your role is to ensure that job gets completed on time. These are two very different approaches and this video does a great job of comparing and contrasting between the two. The B.E.C.C analogy was perfectly stated and the concept is excellent. Thank you for sharing the information!
This video is really inspirational !!! I've watched it twice in class. "Productivity & Human Performance", and my other course: "Creativity, Change & the 21st Century Leader". Congratulations!! Thank you!!!
That was amazing. Thank you for sharing! I understood more about the difference between managers and leaders in that 5 minute video than reading several books and articles.
The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones that do! What a powerful message! Awe inspiring, thanks for the lesson on management and leadership Scott, that was brilliant! Uncle Mik
Absolutely brilliant, thankyou for putting this together! I personally believe the 2 must be combined in equal parts to really succeed in a professional environment.
I wish I ran into you some 23 years ago. I wouldn't have ran into a form of depression. (Nothing major) It was around seven years ago because of anger, I took a project, started "bending" some rules (basically what you just pointed out.) and found myself being promoted. The best note a Manager gave me while giving me a promotion was, “he only cares about doing the right thing, and that is why he is currently the best.” Your speech is, “The best.” Keep it up!
Excellent, succinct video about leadership v management. Those looking for further literature on this topic can research the following scholastic authors; Denhardt, Starling, Drucker, Pink, the list is endless. Mr. Williams, keep up the good work !
good video, something to remember though that you need attributes from both sides depending on the staff and the task at hand. What is also really good to note is that the roles of leadership, management and follow for any individual should change depending on what is needed to deliver the best. sometime leaders need to follow and mangers need to lead

I really love this video. It really inspired me to want to be more of a leader. I've always felt as if I was a leader, now I KNOW I am one. Thanks Mr. Williams for the inspiring info.
Excellent explanation to distinguish between a Manager and Leader. Clarified my concept. I feel more confident now to pursue job interviews for Leadership positions.
Thank You Scott Williams !! Dear God ! i'm still searching my self in this life. I live in France and everyone is judging you, 'cause you don't have diploma, so you'll never know how to manage correctly. And with this video, i realized that i'm not a manager kind, but a LEADER ! I'm ready to change de world now ! ;D Be Safe !

Great video and a great representation of what I preach every day around my organization. Been following your blog and this was very well done. Great job.
i agree i think showing the differences really helped me. thank you for pointing out the differences that's why i see sometimes it gets confused.... as i deal with work situations. good video. i didn't know the difference until listening to your video ty ty
"Managers change things, Leaders change the world."
Very important distinction right there. Makes perfect sense.
My professor showed this in our leadership class. Just awesome. Had to watch it more than once.
Ten differences between managers and leaders:
1) Essence: stability/change
2) Rules: make/break
3) Approach: plans detail/sets direction
4) Culture: execute/shape
5) Conflict: avoid/use
6) Direction: existing roads/new roads
7) Credit: take/give
8) Decisions: make/facilitate
9) Vision: tell/sell
10) Style: transactional/transformational
I initially clicked on this to get some help with an essay, but ended up leaving not only educated, but really inspired. Thank you!
That is cool, I have had several people mention the video has been shared in their college studies. Tell your professor I said thanks
