Mario Kart 64 Tournament - VA 2017 Play-Ins

- These were the play-in rounds to get into the top 16 of the Virginia 2017 MK64 4P VS tournament. All matchups with video times are listed below.
Rules/Info:
24 people were entered in this tournament with the 4 finalists from last year getting a bye into the top 16. The remaining 20 players each played 2 rounds of all 16 tracks to try to earn one of the remaining 12 spots.
Each player plays 2 rounds of 16 races each with their opponents based on predetermined seeding. For each race, 3 points are awarded for 1st, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. The players with the most overall points in their 2 rounds (32 races total) moved on to the top 16. Cups were played in Mushroom, Special, Star, Flower order. Tracks were played with standard non-shortcut rules.
Tiebreakers were done at the end of the play-ins to determine more seeding for the next rounds. Players agreed to a VS mode of their choice with idle characters if wanted. Tiebreakers were best 2 out of 3 for 2 players, or best after 4 races for more players. (Tie in tiebreaker would be broken by 1 more race)
A ROM hack by bitalive was used for allowing same character selection and stats along with other scoring features: github.com/abi...

You can clearly see that they normaly speedrun on their own and don't play multiplayer that often^^
Some of them yes. Most of them do of course play MP often. As soon as you have a friend who like MK64, you play MP every time. But it was a surprising number of straight up bad plays, but not really from the top tier, they all played pretty solid throughout. In my opinion.

You would need something like an everdrive to be able to run it on console like we did. Details are in the github link in the description
Very interesting, never heard of Everdrive before. I started looking up N64 controllers to USB, and found some dual types, have any experience with those? Does it lose any latency for example?
BTW, I think the format you play tournaments take away joy from the game, both from playing and from watching. The point-system forces everyone to scramble for points and they let the 1st place get away too often, like it happened to Matthias countless times through this tournament. When I play with my friends we only count wins, and we play first to 21 or something so it makes for a long game. And the rule is you have to win by 2, so a game could end 27-25-22-18, which makes it fun for 3rd and 4th to still have a chance to win if the score is like 21-20-18-18.
The games become much more rewarding when you win, because you know everyone is gunning for you. For example, if 3 players missed shortcut on KTB, they will all get Blue shell and launch them in a pattern that will cause as much stun as possible to the first place. If 4th picks up 3 Red shells behind 3rd place, we usually shoot them into a wall, since we don't scramble for 1 point, we rather just keep picking up 4th place boxes. With the Bolt, we don't use it on the best possible place, we just use it, but I always try to avoid shot-dodges. But never in my life would I save my bolt to hurt the 2nd, when I can hit the 1st, because it doesn't matter if I place 2nd or 3rd, only 1st counts. You should definitely try this out when you play with Matthias, Zoran and Boss sometime.
One last thing. We only play KTB. Just because it has the legal shortcut, it rewards good driving, and same with the blue shell. With crazy combos you can gain almost a full lap back if you're in last place, the races are always dynamic. There's plenty of places to shoot Green and Red shells and plenty of good places for banana peels and fake boxes. In my opinion the best game for MP play. We call this format "King of Koopa" (first to 21, only on KTB).
The problem with your suggestion is that this is a tournament with 24 people that runs over several days and is streamed on Twitch. The point system is needed in order to reduce the field until you have a final group of 4 players. It's too punitive to give everyone only a single race (there are people who traveled thousands of miles to play in this tournament). Your suggestion might be fine for a group of local friends who can drive home in a few minutes and meetup again the following week. What happens if a player, travelling from Europe, has one round with extremely bad luck or ended up with an unlucky/difficult draw? Sorry for the bad luck, thanks for coming. On the other hand, given our time constraints and the size of the field, it wasn't exactly feasible to do a true round-robin style format where everyone plays each other (even more rounds). Given these considerations, the format we used made the most sense. Yes, there are some downsides, as you mentioned, but really no format will ever be perfect.
dntn31 This format would only be played in the finale by top 4. Or it could be a standalone format played locally as you said, like with my friends. But I assure you, it's more rewarding to win, and it's funnier to watch and play no matter if you're in 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th place.
