  • In my Intro to Brain Tanning series I focus on water soaking. Bucking is another way to prep hides for scraping- while not my preference, there are a lot of great things about bucking hide too, I go into some of them in this video. What I dont mention is that it can also make hides easier to scrape and to soften, depending on your techniques

What a great explanation on water only soaking. Thank you. Soaking in water only is wayyyyyyyy more convenient.

I buck my hides with urine. I collect it in a bucket since I’m off grid and don’t have a flush toilet. The bees love urine too! Crazy! Thanks for the video!

I soak in wood ashs to loosen the hair. Funky is a nice way to put it. It does help get the hair off , usually , but you still have to grain it so I don't know how much easier it makes it. I might try dry scrape next time . With a half hour or more dehairing then probably another hour ( or more) graining , not to mention the funk and waiting for the hair to loosen I don't think dry scraping could be much longer and it'd have to be more conveniant. Ron Nails video shows dry scraping and I think he told where he got his fleshing tool. Trapper supply place. Also warns how he cut himself bad with it when first started using it. One side is razor sharp , other is blunt, for fleshing.

I was just about to soak my hides in KOH.. Now I'm very interested in hydrated lime. Is there a way to make it on your own? Do you burn limestone or shells yourself?

When using lye roughly how much should be added for one deer skin? I don’t need a precise amount but I literally have no idea if it’s half a cup or 20 cups

I dont use lye myself as it is an intense chemical and mixed too strong can damage the hides. It is the concentration, not the exact amount you add that matters- with more water you'd need to add more. I use hydrated lime instead of lye as it is easier on the tanners and the hides and can't be made too strong

Warm greetings Woniya, do you have any recommendations for a fleshing tool for dehairing.. İ checked local woodworkers for dull planer tool, no luck. İ have several hides this season and would love to invest in double handle tool. Thank you ❤️

You could make your own using flat bar stock from a hardware store and an angle grinder, then add wooden handles, I believe brain tanned.com also sells them online

Good point, slash & hacks dont work for this skinner, junk of meat & fat I can deal with ,but cut that which mother nature & God took such time & care to grow approaches the level of sin.
