So glad this conversation will continue. I think Dear Evan Hansen is way more complex than it gets credit for being, and I could listen to the writers talk about it for hours. Plus I hope Steven talks about If I Forget!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Theater Talk folks (Susan and Jesse...) for bringing Steven, Justin and Benj on the program. "Dear Evan Hansen" is BY FAR the BEST BROADWAY MUSICAL I have ever seen in my life (seen hundreds). I recommend it to literally EVERY NY'er, tourist, random person on the street as THE show to see; over any Disney show, British import, ..........the "H" show even. It totally gutted me and engrossed me and drew me in from the opening monologue. As I say to so many people I come across who may not be familiar with the show as to why I think it's superior to all others. It isn't because of any ONE performance or actor (although Ben gives a performance that rivals any male performance I've ever seen on a Broadway stage, musical or otherwise in years if ever...) or any great technical "theatre magic" with fancy, large moving hydrolic lifts and flying pieces and things over the audience. It boils down to one fundamental rule in the theatre for the success of a show (play or musical): THE STORY. If you stripped away the entire score (don't worry Benj/Justin...I'll put you back into this in a second...) and you were just left with the book of "Dear Evan Hansen" by the BRILLIANT Steven Levenson, you would have a STELLAR piece of theatre in and of itself as a play also. THAT'S what makes "Dear Evan Hansen" so powerful and impacting. Now, layer on Pasek/Paul's score, which isn't just upbeat and hip (is that a word the kids are using these days?..maybe 'lit'...whatever the hell that means...), and you have an absolutely GENIUS musical on your hands. Add in a supporting cast with a positively gut-wrenching performance from Rachel Bay Jones (of particular note is her song "So Big/So Small" in Act II) and there is seldom, if anything, I found as a flaw. So thank you again THEATER TALK for bringing the boys on to shed some light on the development of the musical, where it came from and the impact it is having not only on the Broadway/theatre community currently, but on a national and even international platform for teens and families that are struggling with similar issues. Here's hoping that any and every one who has the ability to is as lucky as I was to see this truly phenomenal show and step into your own truth, for YOU WILL BE FOUND!
