  • Deer manager and gamekeeper Paul Childerley has been reloading his ammunition for years, mainly for the cost savings. With the change to copper bullets Paul wanted a Sako round in .243 for roe, but the factory loads hadn’t arrived in the UK. He asked a friend to develop a load for him, using the copper Sako Powerhead Blades - and now he’s a big fan. In this new series Paul looks at how you can save around £20 per box of ammo, simply by investing a few hundred pounds in reloading kit.

I find it to be a hobby, or extension of my marksman hobby. Much like fly tieing. Not every fisherman is into that but some find it rewarding. I wish I could get some of those supplies where I live. I found my Tikka in 243 to be temperamental. Still haven't found a combination worth settling on.

I'm loading 6.5 creedmoor for 98p a round. Thats with 140grn hornady Eldms, RWS primers, 41.5grns of N160. The equivalent load is Hornady match ammo, and last time i checked it was around £2.20 a round. So huge savings to be made.
I get through around 200 rounds a month. So veey easy to work out how much i save.
This load gives me sub MOA at 1000 yards.😁😁

For plinking on the range (totally different requirements to stalking/vermin), I use small pistol charges and home cast lead bullets. Also able to use pistol primers in my low preasure rounds, which I brought cheaply long ago.
Those come out at about 13p per round. Not much more than 22lr!
Also it's something that you can't go out and buy.
(Plus a lot of time, but that is a hobby in itself.)

Europe including the UK are so far behind in reloading, but if you wake to it you'll love the possibilities it opens. In a nutshell you're reloading for economy, but really you're HANDLOADING for QUALITY.
For firearm enthusiasts it also brings back into play all the obsolete, rare and classic big-bore calibres.

We in America still have issues with high prices on gunpowder, bullets, primer, and brass, especially gunpowder. I was able to pick up primer when it was still $40-50 per 1000 a few years back, yes reloading will save a little bit of money.

.243 is a good little cartridge, also been used as urban ct ammo . With right bullet it can handle much, perhaps one of the best buck specialist cartridges. And it was much derived from the grand .240 HH .

    It’s $220 for 1000 primers in Australia.
    $150 a kg of powder
    $90 for 50 brass
    $80 for projectiles

For me it’s just the big layout cost for the equipment, around £1500 you can buy a lot or rounds for that, although I’ve booked on a reloading corse at our club.

If you practice self control with regards to the reloading gadgets, get what you need for tools and no more, then you certainly can save substantially over factory ammo. As well as you can make ammo for your firearm that you can't purchase (since ammo manufacturers only make what is most widely requested and used and avoid specialty stuff). Also, you can make yourself premium ammo at bargain discount prices.
If you are shooting 5.56 NATO/.223 or 7.62 NATO/.308, you might be hard pressed to reload for cheaper than the cheapest ammo you can buy. But for premium ammo, you can do well in savings.

'Surplus' 7.62 NATO/.308 is currently £1.14 a round, even with increased component costs 100 Norma interlocks original price £16.75/100 (sticker left on box) selling for £30/100 reloading is still cheaper. As to tools, the basic 'Lee-Loader' and a mallet is sufficient to make usable reloads, a basic press and die set costs more, and a high end press and dies too much unless your custom loading match ammo.

One would need to fire a great deal of ammunition per year to make the out lay on tools and materials economically justified. However, I can see how the pursuit of the most efficient and effective round might be an enticing pursuit of itself.

reloading for for vermin is a waste of time and effort. I have a mate who reloads with “his mixture” to shoot a mix of roe and foxes maybe 30 max a year. The money he has wasted on reloading gear is crazy let alone the time lost. Stop at the shop and buy 60 that’s if for a few years. I understand shooting clubs firing at paper will run through a lot of ammo but for the average joe this will never be needed.

      What a plonker.
I've been hand loading for over thirty years, making better ammo at less cost.
Then this guy tells me not to bother.
How about you refrain from breeding?
