Roxanne, I just want to thank you so much for your years of helpful tutorials and education. I was a crocheter for a long time, and so intimidated by knitting. I've been a knitter for a few years now and people like you have helped me tremendously. I really appreciate the extensive knowledge you've shared on your channel.

this is such a good idea, and i’m glad you included the toe as well because that’s where my socks always wear out! this technique is also a strong argument in favor of me switching to cuff-down socks😅

Great tutorial today. My Grammie used to speak about this. I could never figure it out though.

I love the way your mind works. And the way you both talked us through your thoughts and demonstrated how to do what you were saying. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be trying this heel and maybe even the toe trick you mentioned

Hello Roxanne. At 3:32 you wrote (sl1 k2) and I think you meant (sl1 k1) as you explained in the audio and did in the video. Thanks a lot for another great video for us knitters.

I'm so glad you circled back to Nora's patent for making the replaceable heel. Her story was rather fascinating, almost like a real Amelia Earhart, going back and forth over the pond.

I love your sock videos- everyone in my family has different fit issues, so your discussions always help me.
This replaceable heel design is so clever. I can hardly wait for the next video!
    Thank you again.

This is pretty cool. My heel wear is frustratingly farther down the foot from the turn stitches. Have yet to find a remedy except to duplicate stitch the area when it starts to get thin.

You can reinforce the soles when the socks are freshly knit, which will add some time to their durability. This video explains it: ua-cam.com/video/E9nNkqLxdhE/v-deo.html

I knew it! It sounded like a "make do and mend" kind of approach! I hope Claude sees this.
It is a brilliant method. I've only really started knitting socks this year (I moved into an old house and I hate having cold feet,) so every time I make a new pair, I'm aiming to try a new technique. I'll try this on the next pair.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us, Roxanne. I swear my mother takes her (gorgeous, time intensive, lovingly crafted) hand knit socks and grinds the heels into the asphalt. And she loves receiving them so much, I can't stop myself for making them for her!! It's a vicious cycle. Looking forward to trying this in a few weeks. Besides, I'm a real push over for anything historical.

This is awesome! I've been looking forward to this video since you discussed the method during a Casual Friday podcast! I'm finally knitting my first sock, so maybe once I get through the simplest one, I'll give this one a go!

What a great tutorial. I haven't worn my knitted socks long enough to wear out heels yet. But I should. I can definitely see trying this on heavy winter socks.

Thanks, a lot Roxanne. I think I would use this technique on toe/up socks since my socks have holes under the heel rather than on the back of the heel, but this technique can easily be adapted for toe/up socks.

I don't wear hand knitted socks often (I mostly donate them to charity), but my commercial socks wear out at the bottom of the heel and the ball of the foot, rather than at the back of the heel and at the toe which I believe is what happens for most people. Just another reason I'm weird, I guess. 🤪

That can be addressed with this technique of reinforcing heels and toes: ua-cam.com/video/E9nNkqLxdhE/v-deo.html

This is great! I think we could pick up the stitches with the scrap yarn starting from the side of the heel - then the bottom - then the other side, and after that we could return to the main yarn and knit above all those new stitches one more time. This way we won't need to sew the edges and the heel will still be detachable.

As I mentioned toward the end of the video, where I showed an example that was done that way, it's an easier-to-knit process, but could be more challenging to take out and reattach. When you recapture the live sts surrounding the heel, you have to make sure at the corners that you have the right sts on the right needles. When you reattach the new heel flap, you will need to use a hybrid of grafting and sewing along the sides of the flaps. With the CO method, you don't need to worry about dealing with live sts, except at the heel turn, so those are clearly all heel turn sts, not gusset sts. It's just a matter of deciding which replacement process you will prefer.

I'm just learning to knit socks (I've resisted for a long time) and have been wishing you had videos on replaceable heels and toes (my husband is very hard on socks) -- and here the video is! Wish come true. 😁 Thank you!

Thank you so much. I am literally today starting the heel flap on my new socks when this dropped. I have been toying with the idea of a garter stitch selvage and even an entire garter stitch heel flap but this is so much more useful. Couldn’t come at a better time for me. Cheers.

Very useful technique! Thank you! I'd like to know about the sock pattern used to make that green ribbed sock...?

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  4 місяці тому

It was a pattern from one of the two sock booklets I showed, Beehive Book No. 134. It's shown on the front cover of the booklet. The stitch pattern alternates columns of 4 stockinette sts with columns of 4 seed/moss stitches.

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful tutorial. Its very neat and hopefully easy. I have been knitting socks for my little brother for about 7 years and he tends to wear the heels out, because of no footwear inside, now I can have a go at fixing them because you made it look very easy. Thank you for all that you do. Take care.
