Thanks for the report & Slava Ukraini ! As you said, the war does not stop if UA retires from Bakhmut. But as long as safely possible, it's better to fight there than around another city that would have the same fate.

The "nail biter" has become personal for me. For two month's I've been writing in YT comments, ususally once a week, with this foreign volunteer fighter now on his sixth month in combat in Bakhmut. In his last message he expected UA to withdraw from the town and he'd write back in 3-4 days (now we know that UA resolved to stay). That was 14 days ago and not a word from him. I am getting more than worried.

I just hope UA's plan is a very good one.
I dont think Ukraine is holding Bakhmut to inflict heavily disproportionate losses on Russia at this point. I think they're doing it to kill the experienced wagner and Russian regulars since they are the only ones that show the ability to advance on Ukrainian positions. I think the point is to prevent experiences Russian soldiers from being able to be mixed in with mobiks in reconstituted units. A unit comprised of only mobiks will have nowhere near the assault ability of a unit with experienced soldiers in the mix. This is about degrading Russian offensive capabilities permanently.
I expect there's a lot of that in there, but in my opinion AFU are simply trying to deny the Russians the propaganda victory they desperately need. It's embarrassing enough that it's taken them so long to get this far. To fall at the final hurdle must then surely be psychologically crushing - as well as a huge propaganda coup for Ukraine.
@@stephenoneill245 ISW assesses that Putin is trying to "expend" the Wagner forces in Bakhmut in senseless human wave attacks and I believe the Ukrainians are happy to oblige.
But the same would apply for UA as well...
I saw in a vid yesterday that reported a large build up of Ukrainian forces to the north east of Bakhmut.
@@1PPPete Ukraine has been rotating troops very frequently around the hot zones. They're making sure battle hardened units aren't attritioned out of existence. They're regularly reinforced with fresh troops from the NATO basic training camps in UK, Germany and the UK. This way knowledge and skill is built up over time.

I think UAF may be getting a 4/1 to 5/1 ratio in Bakhmut. And as long as they keep up those figures the Ukrainians will never budge from Bakhmut. Keep up the good work! 🇺🇦💪👍

Not sure how accurate it is, but a military expert said if Ukraine backs out of Bakhmut, to next line of defense, which is on higher terrain, that Russians would have to cross open fields to advance further as they did at Vuhledar, and this would be far easier way to take them out with artillery versus hand to hand combat. Esp as reports now saying not a 5 to 1 ratio, but more like 2 to 1. On US interview, (March 8), Zelensky said decision to stay at Bakhmut wasn't made by 1 person, but had a meeting with top heads of different services, about 20 people, all speaking freely, and that all decided it was best to remain in Bakhmut at present, with no disagreements. So, I don't think that it's the one General's decision. That general did visit Bakhmut 3x in week.

5 to 1 ratio might be true in defending Bakhmut central part from Russian attacks, but it's not even near in open grounds where Ukrainians try to prevent Russian moves.
It is likely that Ukraine had 7 to 1 casualties some time ago. But as they are moved out of their comfort zone in Bakhmut that has fallen to 5 to 1 or 2 to 1 now. The orcs are still an attacking force on a somewhat fortified position so they will lose more. Also I think AFU would have fully withdrawn unless they we getting a good return on the punishment they are suffering. Sorry but no Discord. I'm saturated social media wise. You won't miss me anyway. I hope you mean 7 or 5 Rus : 1 Ukrainian. Major advantage is that Ukrainians have vastly superior body armour. Much better protection from shrapnel, debris, blast effects, and even rounds that are losing velocity but deadly without that body armour. Russians conscripts and mobiks are always complaint about their crap "toy" gear.
Russian shelling also seem far less accurate...but even if the Ukrainian shelling and mortars are equally as bad the diameter of effectiveness will be greater b/c the poor body armour by the Russians. That's why one is seeing Russian mobiks littering fields but the craters of the artillery and mortars are not right next to them.

The Ukrainian Army has demonstrated such incredible competence in the rest of their defense that the only thing I absolutely know is that whatever the UA does it will be pretty close to optimal. I have never before actually trusted a military, probably because I was a member of the US Navy at one point in my life. I was not impressed at the time, which I now recognize as a kind of culture blindness I am embarrassed to admit.
